Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler: Mardi Gras with the Mouse! Feb 2016 TR **NEW 11/25 *NEW TR LINK

Ohhh, yes, it was VERY cold that day! It probably wouldn't have been so bad if not for how terribly windy it was that day. We never felt like we could properly warm up! And we ARE from the south, so we are pretty wimpy in the cold too. :rotfl2:

I have to say - when it gets cold in the South it is way worse. The last trip we took in November we had one day that was down in 50s, which I wouldn't think twice of around here - jeans and a light jacket - but down there it felt so chilly I had to go and buy a sweatshirt. It is the high humidity levels you have down in the south. It makes the heat more intense, but it also makes the cold more bone-chilling - at least I find this to be the case. I also remember a trip in December that we left Florida it was 32 degrees, and returned to Buffalo it was 32 degrees, but felt way warmer in Buffalo.

I still love cool temperatures in the parks though - maybe because it's so rare, or maybe because I really hate being sweaty, and in the summer Disney has the air conditioning cranked so cold most places its this constant assault going from outside to inside and back again. Though hot and humid at Disney is about the only place I find it tolerable...because it's Disney! :thumbsup2

I'm a little late but glad I found your report. I have to say the tittle really caught my eye. I used it for one of our Mardi Gras Trips. We're in Baton Rouge, so not too far from you. I know what you mean about cold in Disney. We've had a few Mardi Gras trips but the coldest was in 2010 right after the Saints won the Super Bowl. We were bundled up for most of the trip. It didn't make for very attractive pictures.

Your kids are adorable. They really look like they're enjoying Disney. I love big family trips to Disney and sharing the magic with loved ones. Your pictures are fabulous. I love seeing all the details of not only the parade but everything else too. I scrapbook so pictures are very important to me.

I'm looking forward to more.

I was so excited when I discovered those new recliners in the nursing rooms! They made it really hard to get up and go back out in the FL heat. I could've taken a nap in those bad boys. :rotfl:

Oh, darn, you had to miss Stitch. I know that broke your heart. :rotfl2:

Festival of Fantasy is so great. And, I agree, it's good to watch the parade from different distances to be able to get new perspectives.

Your DH's Festival of Fantasy pictures are amazing!

Thanks!

That's definitely true about the humidity. It intensifies the weather, both cold & hot! The wind on this trip some days also made it feel way worse than it probably would have been with less or no wind.

I was hoping for this trip that it would be cool, like in the 60's. Wasn't counting on or prepared for 40-ish degree weather in Disney! It did get better by the end of the week, but some of those days were brutal. And I was constantly worried about the kids that they weren't warm enough since I didn't really have heavy outerwear for either one and had to rely on lots of layers instead. But ask me in 11 days when we are back there for the Mega Meet and I will be wishing it was in the 40's again!! lol

You know...I had to go back and look because your screen name sounded familiar, and I totally followed along with that TR!! No wonder the title sounded so good in my head. lol Sorry I hijacked it!!

It had been a long time since our last Mardi Gras trip because my DH loves MG so much and doesn't want to skip it, even for Disney. I know we had some cold ones when I was growing up, but we had been going in October for so many years I was used to the warmth! It really doesn't make for attractive pictures. lol I kept telling DH I was so bummed because I had packed so many Disney shirts and you couldn't even see any of them because I wore my sweatshirt every day!!

Thank you. :) They really love Disney, especially DS now that he is old enough to remember our trips and look forward to specific rides and shows.

DH does a great job being our main photographer. I appreciate all his hard work, both taking the pictures and editing them after the trips!

I was too!! I appreciate that they have the nursing rooms in general, but those wooden rockers are really not all that comfortable for nursing a baby. I sent an email after our trip talking up how great the recliners were and how I hoped they would consider bringing them to the other parks. There were a couple of times I found myself dozing off in one of them if DD fell asleep while she was eating.

For sure. I've been looking forward to his first time on Stitch for years!!! lol

We had never watched FoF from anywhere but Main Street, so it was cool to see it from somewhere else and experience the floats differently.

Day 2 Continued: Sunday February 7th

Once the parade had ended, we made our way over to Adventureland to use our Pirates FP+. When we walked up and saw the enormous standby line, we were happy to have that FP. However, I still hate the fact that they added FP to a ride like this that used to have perfectly manageable wait times before it was added.

After riding Pirates, we decided to play the Pirates Adventure game because it seemed like something DS would enjoy. We stopped at the kiosk and picked up our treasure map. It is similar to the Agent P interactive game in World Showcase, using your MB to make things happen throughout Adventureland as you go from one stop on your map to the next.

DS was really enjoying it, but unfortunately, we didn’t get too far into the game because the second station just wouldn’t work. We thought maybe it was just us, but another family trying to play was having the same issues. We even went back to the kiosk and a CM came over and tried to fix it, but she ended up making the effect happen manually. When we tried to go to the next station, it wouldn’t work because we hadn’t actually done the previous one. So we gave up on that.

We decided to stop in and see the birds at the Enchanted Tiki Room because they were just about to load the next show.

We figured it was about time to head out to Fort Wilderness because we were doing Hoop Dee Doo that night all together as a group. We stopped for a Dole Whip because you just can’t be that close to them and not get one, even if it is cold outside! Then we made our way to the front of the park.

Day 2 Continued: Sunday February 7th

Unfortunately, this is where our night went into kind of a tailspin of disasters. First problem was the shirts. So back at Christmas, Jessica had decided to get all of the kids matching shirts with their names on them to wear to this dinner, and had given DS and DD their shirts for Christmas. They were white, so I had decided not to take a chance on them getting ruined by wearing them all day long and had packed them with us to change the kids before dinner. The rest of the adults had gotten shirts made, but DH and I had just brought shirts in the same colors that the other adults were wearing to change into.

Fast forward to us walking out of the park, and the Express Monorail is not working. No problem, we will just take the boat right? We get all the way down to the dock, and DH realizes he left the bag of shirts in the car. After hesitating a second, we glanced up and saw the express was working again, so we decide to go back to the TTC to get the shirts and drive over to FW. First mistake, because now we had to go back through security just to get on the monorail, which is no easy feat now that they make you empty out the entire basket of the stroller and inspect every nook and cranny of your bags. I’m all for security but at that moment, it was an enormous pain.

We get on the monorail, arrive at the TTC and make the long walk to the car, and promptly get completely lost trying to get to Fort Wilderness. We ended up actually leaving property before we could turn around to go back into the MK resort area to get to FW. We are still making decent-ish time when we arrive at FW, and we ask the guard at the entrance how to get to Pioneer Hall. He directs us to make a right at the bus stop and follow the road past the campsites. … Now in the back of my mind, I’m remembering there is an internal bus involved, but we figure the guard knows what he is talking about and maybe we catch the bus further into the resort. I’ll save you a bit of wondering…he was totally wrong. We basically drove past the campsites until we got to a spot where you can’t drive anymore, yet there is a sign pointing out Pioneer Hall as straight ahead. This is when I kind of started losing it.

We even turned down a way that said Do Not Enter trying to figure it out and finally found someone who looked like they worked there who told us we needed to go back and take a bus. He told us, again incorrectly, that we could go back to the Trading Post and park there to get the bus. WRONG. Tried that, and it was only golf cart or 15 minute parking. We ended up driving all the way back to the entrance and getting on a bus that had to stop at every single stop. DD was crying because she was ready to eat and I was getting into a mini panic that because we were late, they might not let us in. I don’t know why I thought that, but it wasn’t true. It just added to my heightened frustration though in that moment. So in all of that headache and stress to go back to the car because we needed our shirts, we were in such a rush that we said “forget it” and went without the shirts anyway!!

FINALLY we get there, and get inside, not having missed much of the show, but DD still needs to eat. I made a comment as such, planning to feed her under the cover at the table, and Jessica pointed out there was a bathroom just outside. At that point, I was so upset and annoyed by the whole thing that I just stormed off without saying anything else and sat outside to feed her, fuming that I was paying all this money and missing everything because they thought I should be feeding her in the bathroom. I am totally sure now looking back on it that I was just overreacting and taking her meaning the wrong way. She probably thought I would be too uncomfortable to feed DD at the table.

Once she had finished up, I got inside and as the show started and the food began coming out, I forgot about all of the stress of getting there and just concentrated on having a good time! Our table was Category 1, so we were on the floor and really close to the stage. It was a fantastic spot!

It quickly became obvious that there were a lot of other Mardi Gras evacuees in the room, because every time someone would say they were from Louisiana, pretty much the entire place would cheer! Stryder was even picked to be in the show when one of the performers came over to our table when they were announcing the celebrations and we had pointed him out for his birthday. She asked the table where we were from, and we of course got a lot of cheers when we said Louisiana, and she said, “Yeah, yeah, we get it, you’re ALL from Louisiana!” lol Then she asked Dave & Jessica if it would be ok to bring him up on stage later, and they all agreed though they thought he might freeze up once on stage.

Then came the food. Oh. My. Gosh. THE FOOD. The chicken, the potatoes, the cornbread. It was all so incredibly delicious!!

Then it was time for Stryder’s on-stage debut as the cowboy!

It was a wonderful show!! It was definitely a lot of fun for us to all do as a group too. We had thrown out a few different options of what meals would be fun, and had considered a character meal, but I think this was the better choice. I think with character meals where everyone is having to get up and down from the table for pictures and stuff, it wouldn’t have been as much time for all of us to hang out, laugh, and have fun.

We had a funny moment when all the girls hurried out to the bathroom after the show. I was holding DD and she was smiling at the ladies behind me in line. The ladies were eating it up, and one of them said, “Aww, sha!” If you’ve ever seen Princess & the Frog, you might have heard Ray say this a few times, and it’s a phrase often uttered in Cajun country where we now live in Louisiana. The word is actually “cher” which is a French term of endearment, but in the common language here it is pronounced like sha, so it’s become kind of its own word and people even spell it like that. So as soon as she said it, my ears perked up and I turned around to ask her where in Louisiana she was from. She was from one of the smaller cities just outside of where we live! It was pretty funny that with just that one phrase, we realized we were sort of neighbors!

Since we had missed it before the show, we decided to stop for some group pictures before heading back to our resorts for the night.

Our travel woes were still not over as we got turned around AGAIN leaving FW and trying to get to AKV!! But eventually we made it, even though it was later than we had planned on, and got some quick showers before going to bed.

UP NEXT: Puppy Kisses!

I'm trilled this title was used. I just love that phrase.

We also had lots of cute clothes picked out to wear that no one ever got to see.

Once again your DH did a fabulous job on the photos.

I can just feel your frustration with driving around DW. We did more driving this last trip due to having to be somewhere for a certain for the wedding ceremony. We thought we knew what we were doing and got turned around trying to get to the MK parking lot, something we have never done. In the past we have always used Disney transportation.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the show and had some great family time. I've never done it but would love to someday.

I'm glad you guys got in some Adventureland attractions. I'm sorry the game ended up not working though!

Oh no! I'm sorry the start of the evening didn't go as planned :( But I'm so glad you were able to enjoy the show and the food. Stryder looks so cute up on stage!

those are some great parade picture and definitely a lot of close ups which is a different view (in same cases it was almost like "too good" as you could make out the mesh in eye spots for some of the characters, etc.) - definitely a neat perspective

on a side note, Peter looks like he's been hitting the pixie dust a bit too hard ;)

I fully agree with you about rides, especially in MK, that shouldn't have FP. Pirates is a great example of an attraction whose queue was not designed to have FP and it overall makes it less efficient. Also, people eaters such as Haunted Mansion or, heck, even Ariel's ride shouldn't have FP either really. And there are enough attractions in MK that they could have more as Standby only

Wow, I can totally understand how you would get stressed out over that trip to Pioneer Hall - logistic stuff like that makes me really nervous and I am always nervous I will be late so I would definitely be stressing out! This further cements my revised plans of stopping by MK and taking the boat from there to get to Pioneer Hall for our Hoop Dee Doo ADR coming up. Glad you made it and didn't miss much of the show though.

Looks like such a fun time for everyone and looks like Stryder did great! Glad you were able to get the photo after the show

That's too bad that the Pirate Adventure game was down! It sounds like something really fun!

Crazy travel troubles! That sounds really stressful and I can understand your frustration. I would have been on edge too. But it sounds like the show and family (and food!) made it better! Did DS enjoy the show? It's on our list but I wasn't sure if the show would be over the boys heads and they would be bored.

Those Festival of Fantasy pictures turned out amazing! So many great little details, especially the one of Timothy!

Stryder looks like he did a great job in the show! I love HDDR. I kind of wish we had booked it for our next trip but we're trying to do places we haven't been before.

Well, I'm just a little bit behind... I can't believe you saw Launchpad in AKL. That is awesome!!! The parade pictures are great! I kind of like how it captured some of the detail and facial expressions even if it couldn't catch the scope of the floats.

Sorry about all the frustrations with your HDDR evening, but I'm glad you at least enjoyed it!

It was just too perfect for a Mardi Gras trip!

That was so frustrating! I'm glad I didn't spend a ton of money on cute matching shirts or anything. I would have been so disappointed!

That was a big part of the problem...we thought we knew what we were doing! If only we would have remembered the shirts from the car or just said forget them from the get go and taken the boat, we would have been fine. I thought we had given ourselves plenty of time, so to get so turned around end up late had me so beyond frustrated!

It's a fantastic show! It had been a long time since we had done it, and it was even more fun than I had remembered.

I'm glad you guys got in some Adventureland attractions. I'm sorry the game ended up not working though!

The game would probably be pretty fun if working properly. And it's not as popular as the Sorcerers game so there were only a couple other families doing it at the same time as us instead of having to wait for several people to take their turns.

It was a rough start, but ended up being a great night! He really did a great job as the cowboy.

I didn't notice that about the eyes...WEIRD!! lol

YES! There is just no reason for omnimovers like those you mentioned to have FP. I get why they did it when rolling out FP+ but it really bogs the system down, which is frustrating for those things you can't or choose not to get a FP+ for in favor of other attractions.

YES TAKE THE BOAT! Our lives would have been so much easier had we either remembered the shirts from the start or just said "oh well" when we realized we had left them. Mistake one was thinking we had enough time to go back to the car and move it, and mistake two was listening to the guard when I knew in my gut we were missing something. The boat is a much better choice!!

It did end up being a great night, despite the hassle of getting there. Stryder did a wonderful job as the cowboy!

That's too bad that the Pirate Adventure game was down! It sounds like something really fun!

The few minutes we were able to play it were pretty fun. We would probably give this a try again on a future trip.

Oh my gosh, it was so beyond frustrating. Next time, we will just save ourselves the stress and take the boat!! DS (and really, all of the kids) got a kick out of the show. There were a couple "slower" parts but they really keep it fun and entertaining. They do some jokes that go over little kids' heads but if your kids are anything like DS, he just cracks up whenever everyone else is, even if he doesn't get the joke. lol And there was plenty that they could follow along with. Plus, there's washboards and napkin twirling, and that's just fun for everyone! I honestly don't think there is really any age that they would be bored, but especially not at their ages!!

Those Festival of Fantasy pictures turned out amazing! So many great little details, especially the one of Timothy!

Stryder looks like he did a great job in the show! I love HDDR. I kind of wish we had booked it for our next trip but we're trying to do places we haven't been before.

Thanks! Timothy Mouse was one of the details I had never noticed before DH's pictures!

I can understand that. There's so much to do at Disney that it's tempting to try it all, but then there are things that are so much fun you just want to do them every time!

No worries, I can understand why the Dis might not be a priority right now!!

We couldn't believe it either. I kind of hit DH on the arm and said, "Is that...no way, is that Launchpad?!" So random!

It was a rough start to the evening, but the show and the food more than made up for it. It was a perfect choice for our big family meal!

I wanted to do a quick PTR type post to share our plans for our upcoming quick trip! Yes, we just went in May as a family, but when DH and I heard about the DIS Mega Meet weekend for their 10th anniversary and saw the dirt cheap rates they were offering, we decided to book a long weekend for just the two of us. If I'm being honest, I'm a little worried about leaving DD...it will be the first time I leave her overnight! But we are looking forward to some time away just the two of us!

We leave Thursday the 21st and will drive most of the way after dropping the kids off with my mom. I'll be working in the morning, so we are hoping to hit the road from my parents' house by about 5:30 or so. We booked a room to stop overnight.

Friday July 22nd we will get up from the hotel we stay overnight in and drive the few hours to Disney World to check into our room at the Contemporary!! I couldn't be more excited about getting to stay here. It was soooo cheap with the group rates, we couldn't pass it up. I just wish we could have booked a monorail resort when we had the kids and stroller with us, but I'm just happy we get to try it! After checking in, we will head over to the Boardwalk to pick up our credentials for the Mega Meet weekend and drop off some items we are donating to the silent auction to benefit Give Kids the World. We booked Beaches & Cream (new for us) for 5 pm, but I have been looking for something a little earlier if possible. That evening, we will go to DHS for EMH and to watch the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular. We have FP+ for Star Tours, TSM, and ToT that night.

Saturday July 23rd we are going to monorail over to MK for the morning. We have FP+ for Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain. At 5:30, we are going to one of the events, a Sip & Snack with Corey, Julie, Craig, and Teresa at Disney Springs. This is probably the event I'm most excited for! Apparently so was everyone else, because it sold out the quickest when registration opened! If we are feeling up to it, we may try to go to AK for the Tree of Life awakening and maybe the Jungle Book show. We had FP for it another night, but they announced a big DIS event, so we had to cancel them

Sunday July 24th we just have a couple of FP+ for Epcot because we wanted to try Frozen Ever After, so we got one for that and one for SE later in the morning, so we won't be in a rush. We were supposed to do Beaches & Cream this afternoon, but they announced an event DH really wanted to do, so I was happy we were able to switch it to Friday instead. We'll be going to MK to meet up with Craig & Michael from the Disneyland edition of the podcast to do a Connecting with Walt meet on Main Street. Since we will be in the MK area, we may try to hit Trader Sam's after the meet, then go back to MK for at least Wishes if not the parade too.

Monday we have a later breakfast at Kona (another new one for us), then we will head to Disney Springs for the live taping of the DIS Unplugged podcast at the Cirque du Soleil theater. I don't really know how long it will take or what we will have time to do after the taping, but we will be going back to Epcot for the evening. We weren't planning on doing the new Soarin' since DS loves it so much and we thought we might wait and do it with him when we go in October, But it was available so we grabbed evening FP+ for that and for Mission Space. Then the DIS is doing an IllumiNations dessert party that night that we are signed up for. I'm really excited about the dessert party! It should be a lot of fun, and the desserts sound delicious.

Tuesday we drive home. I know I will be ready to see my babies by then!!

We are also looking forward to seeing some of the people we did our Viva Italia ABD trip with for the first time since that trip! Plus we have several other DIS meets to look forward to that I'm pretty excited about! Hopefully I can get a few more updates in before we leave!!

Wow! That should be an awesome quick trip. Have fun! I'm sure the kids will be fine for a few days.

What an action packed weekend! We'll be heading that way on Saturday but only as far as Orange Beach. Have a great adult time.

Such an exciting trip you have planned! It will be nice for you and DH to have some alone time and it sounds like you're trying some yummy new restaurants! AND you get to stay at the Contemporary which is awesome!

Sounds like great plans - and with being just the two of you should make it easier to move from place to plan compared to if you had the kids as well

What time do you think you will be picking up your credentials on Friday? That is probably when we will do that as well after we have lunch at Morimoto's - so probably be there like 2:30 or 3 - maybe we could see you then

I didn't sign up for the connecting with Walt one because I couldn't stay the whole time and didn't want to take the spot of someone who could, but I am hoping to stop by right at the start to say hi to Micheal and Craig and see if they will sign a Connecting with Walt poster I had made - maybe will see you then as well.

I know for regional events the tapings have taken ~1 hour but not sure about this one

Fellow New Orleanian(well LaPlace actually) here enjoying your report. I love Disney, but I also love Mardi Gras, so never made the trip during that time yet. I am sure we will in the near future though, when our daughter starts school in the next couple of years. I've heard it's a good time to go and your trip looks to confirm that. I love seeing the repping of the Saints with the hats and shirts too. Who Dat!!
