THE FORCE… THE FOOD… THE FLOWERS… A MAY 2015 DINING (mostly) REPORT - COMPLETE

I should clarify, KathyM2 - you're not issued a special "ticket" to get to the front of the line, but if you have an early breakfast time (1 hour to 45 minutes before the park opens) - you are basically released into the courtyard where you can stand behind a rope just around the corner (within spitting distance!) of 7DMT. You are released to the park at the same time as rope drop happened - which was about 15 minutes before official opening time - and the Be Our Guest breakfast group is the first to arrive, since it is so close. By the same token, you could be the first group on Peter Pan's flight, or really anything within Fantasy Land. We were on the ride and off before the 9:00 AM opening time. It was pretty great - I won't lie!

Gotcha...thanks for clarifying :)) Much appreciated!! Those pre-RD ADR's are really hard to come by...but the breakfast menu at BOG looks good so I'd like to do it if we get a chance...but we may have to settle for lunch.

Arrival and Check-In – Wednesday, May 13 - Polynesian Village Resort Club Level

We had a smooth and uneventful flight from Denver at 7:00 AM, which put us into Orlando at 12:30. We were actually a little ahead of schedule and arrived fifteen minutes early, which is always a nice thing. Our luggage was off the carousel even before our driver, Daniel from Happy Limo, had arrived.

The one-way price to the Polynesian was $125, plus gratuity. While we could have easily used Magical Express, I do appreciate a car service, especially when we are so eager to get to our resort. It was warm when we arrived, but I didn’t notice that the humidity was especially high, so that was a relief. At least we felt like we could breathe easily. We put on our Magic Bands and officially felt like we were on vacation!

051315%20MK%20Gatescopy_zpsihq31sf6.jpg

A golf cart met us in front of the Great Ceremonial House at the Polynesian, and took us to the Hawaii Longhouse, which is the location of Club Level accommodations. We were assigned a lagoon-view room on the 2nd floor. I had requested a room on either the 1st floor (with a patio), or the 3rd floor (with a balcony) – but as most lagoon-view rooms are on the 2nd floor, of course that’s what we got. The nice concierge made some calls and arranged for a switch to the 1st floor the following day, so I must say that he tried his best to make it happen for us.

(Small little rant here – during our last two stays at WDW – here and at the Grand Floridian – we placed special requests during online check-in. However, both times, it appeared to be a complete surprise to the front desk clerks until we mentioned it and they had to do some scrambling. Better customer service would have been to let us know upon arriving that they were aware of our request, but unfortunately the room type was unavailable. The way it is, I feel like it’s a waste of time to request anything. OK, rant over. This was a wonderful vacation, so if that’s the only annoying thing to happen, we’re in good shape…)

Anywho… where was I? Oh, yeah… concierge wanted to make sure that our magic bands were all working properly. DH’s Magic Band was the only one that wasn’t fully activated for some reason (they had us each test our bands on the outside door before we left the desk), but it was easily taken care of by concierge. We picked a new PIN number for purchases as well, as we couldn’t remember what we had set up initially several months ago.

I have to say that the grounds of the Poly are beautiful. We saw a glimpse of the East pool construction projects between our longhouse and another one, but never heard a thing, and never experienced any inconvenience at all from the continuing construction. It was lush, beautiful, and shady all around the resort. The torches were lit, the pool was open and busy, and the kids’ splash area was completed.

When we checked into our room, it was such a beautiful view that we no longer cared about having a patio or balcony – it really could have been considered a “theme park view”.

Here is our view of the castle, although it is not the best photo:

Our room number was 2508. We let concierge know that we would stay where we were rather than switching rooms the next day, and felt very happy about the decision. The DVC bungalows out on the water didn’t detract from the view at all, which was white sand and a gorgeous view of Cinderella Castle in the distance. The concierge host said that it was very common for people to request a different room and then change their mind once they saw the view from their assigned room.

After a quick pause for sunscreen and to inspect our small Club Level welcome box of chocolates (sorry, two of them were eaten before I remembered to take a picture – guess we were hungry)....

we grabbed our Armed Forces Salute ticket vouchers, and headed to the Magic Kingdom via monorail for lunch. It was a very short walk to the Great Ceremonial House, and we stopped into the gift shop on the first floor to browse quickly. DH found a t-shirt that he really liked, and the gift shop offered to send it directly to our room that afternoon, so we didn’t have to backtrack to the room or take it to the park. I also found some really cute leather Dooney bags that I’ve never seen before, although I was not in the market for a new Dooney on this trip.

051315%20Leather%20Dooney1copy_zpshjg6u8o1.jpg

It was a quick jaunt on the monorail (“¡Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas!”) to the Magic Kingdom, where we stopped by the ticket booth to activate our military tickets. It was about 2:30 or 2:45 at that point, I think, and there was no one in line, so it was super easy and quick. Then through bag check and into the park, where there were already crowds lining main street for the afternoon parade. We had a FastPass scheduled for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, so we headed straight to that before lunch.

It was a cute ride. Perfect entry-level coaster for the younger set. In-between Barnstormer and Big Thunder Mountain in terms of thrill, although this photo makes it look like we are going full tilt down Expedition Everest.

That’s me and DH (with face partially covered by the rider in front of him), and DS in front of us. Maybe we’re a little dramatic, ya’ think??! I chalk it up to the excitement of the first ride of our Disney vacation. At any rate, 7DMT had great theming, and it is so exciting to have a new ride at Magic Kingdom! Last time we visited, a year and a half ago, it was still under construction, and so it was neat to see it evolve into the final product.

Great pics!! And the Poly looks amazing...how awesome it must be to stay there!! It's true what you say about room requests...I don't even bother with them until arrival. BTW I'm reading a really interesting book called "Heads in Beds" sort of an insiders' look at the hotel business...kind of makes me understand the whole room request thing. But when you are paying club level at the Poly prices...they should really do better...oh well. I'm glad you were happy with your room in the end.

Did you say food? I'm in! Your trip plans look so fun!

The views from your room were awesome! I think it was a good decision not to switch rooms. :-)

It looks like you really enjoyed 7DMT. We weren't very impressed, but I think the theming was well done.

Lunch at Columbia Harbor House – Wednesday, May 13

As you can imagine, we were a tad bit hungry at this point, as evidenced by the way we wolfed down our welcome chocolates. With the first ride of the day under our belt, we headed for Liberty Square and Columbia Harbor House. It is so peaceful and relaxing in here. We ordered our food and headed upstairs, where it was nearly empty. DS decided on the chicken strips with fries kids meal. It came with yogurt, grapes, and a small drink.

He was especially excited to discover barbecue sauce at the condiment station, and thought the entire meal was delicious. Although at age 13, he is a few years past the official “kids meal” age according to Disney, we never had any problem with him ordering from the kids meal menu as his hunger dictated. I know that was a huge concern to me when he aged out of the kids choices, but it’s really never been an issue, even at sit-down restaurants. We usually ask for a kids and adults menu both for him, and then let him decide what sounds good.

I had decided long ago that I was going to try the lobster roll.

It came with homemade potato chips, which is one of my favorite things. It was quite a bit of bread, but it was tasty, and I split it with DH, who in turn gave me half of his Anchors Aweigh Sandwich, which was tuna, lettuce and tomato on multigrain bread.

It was a perfect lunch for the first day at the parks. It was satisfying, but not overly filling – Just right for what was rapidly becoming a very warm day outside. As we left, we caught a portion of the Festival of Fantasy parade, which was indeed beautiful.

PhotoPass_Stock%20Festival%20of%20Fantasy%20Parade_zpsdj4jnt1n.jpg

Next, we headed over to Big Thunder Mountain for our next FastPass. One of our favorite rides, and it didn’t disappoint. Then we headed back across the park to Tomorrowland, where we stopped for some photos with the PhotoPass photographers – here’s my favorite family photo of the trip:

051315%20Favorite%20Family%20Photo%20with%20Castle_zpsgdzmqob4.jpg

Once in Tomorrowland, we hopped on Space Ranger Spin. On Space Ranger Spin, I had to lie to the men in the family to avoid their pity. So, I "added" 100,000 to my point total when they asked, which got me to within spitting distance of their scores, but had to recant eventually because the shame was too great to bear. You can see the concentration on their faces:

051315%20Space%20Ranger%20Spin_zpsvdkgats3.jpg

In Tomorrowland, there is a line of FastPass kiosks, so once we used our Space Mountain FastPass, the last scheduled FastPass of the day, I headed over there and booked a 4th FastPass for after dinner – Jungle Cruise at NIGHT, which was on my trip bucket list. We’ve never ridden it after dark, so I wanted to see what that was like.

Your pics are awesome. And I'd like about my Buzz score too - I'm terrible at it but it's fun. Jungle Cruise at night would be the best - I've never done that either...may have to add that to our list too.

Dinner at Be Our Guest – Wednesday, May 13

It was time for Dinner at Be Our Guest. As has been the case before, we checked in, received our pager, and waited on the bridge for about 20 minutes past our dining time before we were greeted and ushered inside the castle. The restaurant was just as beautiful as it was last time we were there, and to my surprise, we were seated in the West Wing again (as we were on our last trip to WDW). Since this is the smaller area of the restaurant and very popular, I had not expected it. It is very awesome in there, with the changing portraits and the rose with its petals falling. It is also very dark, and hard to get good photos, so forgive me that the food doesn’t look very appetizing. Trust me, it was DELICIOUS. Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes!

One of my favorite parts of dining at Be Our Guest is being able to have a bottle of wine with dinner – IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM!!! It feels decadent, and a bit illicit, to enjoy a little vino in the formerly alcohol-free zone of the Magic Kingdom. We debated on the wine for a few minutes. I had originally wanted to try the Paysage from the Lasseter Family winery, which is a red blend, but after speaking with the waiter and discussing our favorite wines, he recommended the Flowers Pinot Noir, which is not as bold as the Paysage. As we don’t typically like the bigger red wines, and know for a fact that we like Pinot Noirs, it was a good choice. It was very, very good, and we didn’t regret the decision.

051315%20Be%20Our%20Guest%20Flowers%20Pinot%20Noir_zpszm2fdfvh.jpg

DH ordered the Seasonal Salad Trio as a starter. It was a summer sampler of beet and raisin salad, watermelon salad, and cold green bean salad. He’s had this before, and really enjoyed it, so was looking forward to a repeat.

051315%20Be%20Our%20Guest%20Salad%20Trio_zpsutjv4yn0.jpg

For dinner, DS ordered the Grilled Strip Steak. He’s a real carnivore, our boy. Plus, he really likes French fries, so this was a big winner for him. It was a large steak, and I think he ate nearly every bite. I ate about half of his green beans. I couldn't stop, they were so good.

051315%20Be%20Our%20Guest%20Steak%20Mike%20Dinner_zpsflqapry4.jpg

DH had the Herb-Crusted Lamb, which was also delicious. It looks a little overcooked in this photo, but DH said it was cooked perfectly - just how he likes it. It’s definitely the result of the lighting in the West Wing. Our iphone cameras just can’t quite keep up with dimly lit rooms.

051315%20Be%20Our%20Guest%20Lamb%20Shawn%20Dinner_zpscup1jf2s.jpg

I had a new dish for me – the Sauteed Shrimp and Scallops, after reading several positive reviews. It was great, and I highly recommend it. It would have been way too filling if I’d eaten all the puff pastry, so I left about half of that on the plate, but the seafood itself was well-cooked and delicious.

We decided to forego dessert, figuring we could get some nibbles at the club level lounge before bedtime back at the Poly. After dinner, we walked over to Jungle Cruise and enjoyed our first-ever night journey down the rivers of Africa and Asia. It was a nice change to see it at night, but I honestly didn’t feel it was outstanding. If I had to choose a night cruise or a day cruise next time, I think I’d stick with daytime. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to LIVE there…. know what I mean?

After Jungle Cruise, it really hit us that we had been on the “go” since very early in the morning, so we dragged ourselves to the monorail and were back at the Polynesian very quickly. THIS is the wonderful part about staying at a monorail resort. It is wonderful to have a late night at EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, and not have to deal with a lengthy bus journey. That was the worst part of staying at the Beach Club last time.

DH and I stopped in at the lounge to sample some evening desserts and try the much-touted Ku’ulei Punch. DS grabbed a small dessert and headed back down the hall to the room for a shower. The Punch was delightful. There was also a selection of wine, cheeses and beer and several dessert offerings. At 10:00, the lights dimmed for Wishes, and it was a nice view out of the large windows of the lounge over to the show at the Magic Kingdom. The Wishes Soundtrack played in the lounge simultaneously, so it was the perfect end to a wonderful day.

Yum...your dinner looked really good. I'm glad to read a positive review of that seafood dish...I read some negative ones that scared me a bit but yours looked delish. I really want to see the Jungle Cruise at night on our next trip too.

Hi!!
I just found your TR...and I love it! I hope you decide to continue! I'm especially interested in the Chef's Table at V and A...I want to book it for my birthday next year (Feb 2016). We're also staying at the Poly and I can't wait as it's my favorite resort too. thanks for the tip in getting the BoG pre-park opening breakfast. I'd like to ride 7DMT on standby and this seems to be the only way it's possible without the long wait times. I love BoG too and hopefully will be able to get an ADR for it. My ADR window opens in 5 days...yikes. Have to narrow it all down.

We also did SWW weekends this year, and we really enjoyed Rebel Hangar too!

Loving your report thank you for posting!

We stayed at the Poly on the first floor in the CL building in 2006 and I have to say looking at your photos the new Villas ruin the CL view. In fact, I wonder if you were on the first floor how much of the Castle you would even see?

Thank you for clearing up the question I had about Disney allowing my 11 year old small eater to order and be charged a kids menu item. There is conflicting information about this on other sites.

I was thinking of trying that shrimp and scallop dish at BOG for dinner on Sunday-your photo and review have made it a definite!

Hi Chunkymonkey!

So glad that you're reading - I've enjoyed your trip reports as well! I WILL get back to this. It's a crazy time of year for me at work, and by the time I get home, sitting at the computer is the last thing I want to do. LOL! I am hoping that by the end of next week I can get another installment completed. Sorry to leave everyone hanging. Here's another tip: Make sure to call the restaurant directly for your V&A reservation (the phone number is 407-939-3862) - and do it on the "calendar date" - not your online booking date, or you may not get in. I took a chance and figured out that trick by accident, and was very excited when they took my reservation. I hope not too many people read this and figure that out. Ha ha! So, if you are arriving on Feb. 27th, for instance, call on August 27th (even though your ADR window might open on August 28th or 29th), and check for the entire length of your stay at the Poly. I hope you have as amazing a time as we did - and I'll look forward to reading YOUR next trip report.... Let me know how your quest for reservations goes - for both V&A Chef's Table and BOG Breakfast! I REALLY hope it helps you get a table for your birthday!!

Hi Michelepa!

Wow - I'm super glad you are reading along - it gives me the impetus to finish. I hate it when a trip report dies on the vine, so I'll do my best to work hard to complete it. Reading my last cruise trip report is so fun - it's amazing how quickly you forget the little details, so I highly recommend writing a trip report, if nothing more than to create a digital scrapbook for yourself.

Yes, our son has never been made to feel uncomfortable in asking for both a kids and adults menu, and then making the decision based on his appetite and also what sounds good to eat. I think maybe Disney was a little more strict a few years back, but we've not had any problem. The fixed-price events, of course, we still expect that he is charged as an adult. He's just now getting to the age (at 13), where he is hungry for the larger portions than the smaller portions, so it's not as much as an issue. But I remember when he first aged out and I felt the same anxiety with his smaller appetite. We have also had success in ordering an appetizer and an entrée and splitting both. Our server at Le Cellier was very accommodating about that.

Regarding the views from 2nd floor club level.... I guess we don't have anything to compare them to, but the way the tree line is in front, it didn't appear that the Villas affected the view of the castle at least. Now, they did obscure what must have been a beautiful water view, but I was impressed that we could see the castle being on the 2nd floor - since they are not considered "theme park" rooms. I didn't expect that. You are probably correct, and that the castle would not have been visible from the ground floor at all. But that pretty little patio on the ground floor leading to the white sand beach might have made me feel a little better. :) Enjoy your upcoming trip!

Joining in - sounds like a great trip. The Polly is my dream resort - hopefully someday

Love, love dining heavy TR's so really looking forward to this - especially the V&A Chef's table. A few trips ago we did V&A (normal room) for our 10 year anniversary and absolutely loved it and would love to try the Chef's table some day

We have never been able to get a dinner ADR for BOG but the food looks quite good. We did do the Lasseter wine tasting deminar at the food and wine festival a few years ago (did a review of it in my October '13 TR if you are interested) - summary of the wines we tasted is:
Enjoué Rosé Blend: This was quite a good dry Rosé. Fairly mild/even in flavor - not the strong strawberry or other berry notes you get from some Rosés.
Paysage: this is a Bordeaux-style blend (I don't remember the exact grapes in int) but this was probably my favorite - very smooth and easy drinking but also interesting - not "just" a typical Cab or similar
Amoureux Malbec Red Blend: This was the "biggest" of the wines we had and was another good one. Many people found this to be their favorite. It was good, but just not as well balanced to me as the Paysage.

I think the Paysage would have been good for your husband but probably a little heavy for your sea food dish - definitely think a pinot fit better since you were both having it

Awesome summary of the Lasseter wines - fantastic information. We like Bordeaux, so would have probably enjoyed the Paysage, but the Flowers Pinot was good. We really enjoy wine, but are not experts, and probably pair them all wrong with food unless it's on the label. :drinking: But... we always enjoy them, nonetheless.

Working on another installment of this trip report. Thanks for your patience - as soon as I'm done, I'm going to read your pre-trip report. It looks like you are arriving in Disneyland on our very last day there. We are having dinner at Napa Rose that night (Saturday the 10th) at the Chef's Counter. If you are a foodie and enjoy wine, I highly recommend trying to get a seat, if you haven't already. Next to Victoria and Albert's Chef's Table, it was one of the best dining / wine experienced we've had. I know they still had some availability for the 10th, because the manager just called me last night to cancel our Thursday, Oct. 8th reservation due to an unexpected closure that night (maybe a private party??), and he was able to swap us over to the 10th. It would be fun to run into you there! :)
