So Disgusted-Weather

We are checking into CBR today, the weather outlook is horrible. From Sunday thru Wed (5 days) there is a 80-90% chance of rain (and not just a passing shower-looks like a all day/night event). People always say to put on the ponchos and just go to the parks. What do you do when there is lightning/thunder happening? Do you risk it and walk ride to ride? This will be our last Aug/Sept trip, just too unpredictable. Sorry to sound like a downer but we were planning on a lot of waterpark time and now that doesn't look possible.

If it's not storming, the water park is great in the rain! There are no crowds and you can just walk on to everything. We were there in July and the one day we got more than a 10 min shower was our water park day of course. It rained for almost 2 hrs from about 10-noon. There was no lightning so the park stayed open and it was great. We put our stuff under some heavy shrubbery by our chairs so the towels stayed dry but then when the rain stopped and sun came out at 12, people started showing up and by 2pm you could hardly walk around in there and the lines were terrible. Luckily we had done everything multiple times so we just left.

Does it say just rain or thunder and lightening. It's possible it's just going to be wet, it's hurricane season so you can expect a lot of that in Florida. I go often in late August/early Sept. and as you said, I just put on my rain gear and go about my business. WDW does do a good job of sticking lightening rods all over the place so maybe the water parks are out but the parks are still open, look on the bright side, you won't be hot.

I forgot too that there was one day at Magic Kingdom where there was a pretty heavy steady rain for almost an hour. It was pretty miserable so I really feel for you if you have to deal with that the entire time. I would get heavy duty ponchos, not those cheap plastic 99 cent ones and wear shoes that can get wet and dry easy and try to alternate outside rides and the inside ones. I'm sure some rides might be closed down though if the rain is really bad.

I'm here now. Arrived Wednesday. Yesterday was our first day in the parks. Went to epcot, around 12:30 it poured with lightening. Lasted 2 hours, after that. Beautiful weather. Right now I'm waiting for the family to get dressed. Bright sunshine with fluffy clouds but every day does show thunderstorms. In florida though Thunderstorms could mean a variety of things.

You've just got to expect it at any time and work around it.

Yesterday, we arrived at Test Track at 11:30 am just as the rain started, so of course we couldn't go on. We went to the back of Test Track where the gift shop and games are and the kids played while it poured heavily and thundered and lightening for two solid hours. We finally emerged when it started to rain lightly and toured WS under the clouds.

It was a lovely day without the sun. :)

It's tropical storm Erika.

Keep an eye on the forecasts. One thing I've done every year since TS Faye visited in 2008: I bring a map of FL, by county. When the storm warnings come in, it's really helpful to know whether the warning is the county 5miles away or on the opposite end of the state. WDW straddles the border of Orange and Osceola counties.

For what it's worth, those storms tend to empty the parks!! The BEST day of touring ever, was the day Faye was due to land in Orlando. It was our last day. The parks opened early, anticipating an early closure. We got there for rope drop, and had the MK to ourselves. It was wonderful!!!

Invest in ponchos, keep an eye on the watches and warnings, and have fun!

We're checking into the Poly tonight. I've looked at about 100 different weather forecasts! LOL. Only one or two are as dire as what you're worrying about. I think we'll be fine! Probably lots of afternoon showers (typical Aug/Sept weather), and maybe one day of torrential rain/winds. That's my prediction!

Thanks for the vote of confidence everyone. I checked weather.com and it looks bad. The problem is the lightning/thunder, I would worry about walking around in that. We do have good Mickey ponchos, thanks.

Also, on a Thunderstorm day, we tend to find that World Showcase in Epcot is a great place to be. Lots to see, all in pretty close proximity to each other.

From what our local forecasters are saying (and goodness knows if they know what they're talking about or not!), today, tomorrow and Sunday should be nice in the AM and then wet in the afternoon, which is typical weather for this time of year. It looks like if the tropical storm hits, Monday and Tuesday might be wet all day but we don't know if the storm will hit or not. If you just have lots of rain with no lightening, throw on a good quality poncho or rain jacket and try to make the best of it. I would say to try to fit in your water park day over the weekend though, in case the storm is really crappy and the water parks shut.

I say just buy a lottery ticket before you go to the parks. Odds are unlikely you will win and unlikely you will get hit by lightning.....

Just looked at the National Weather Service forecast and it says 60% chance of rain each day, which seems pretty normal to me. We were at WDW last week and every day had a 60% chance of rain also, but it only ended up raining 5 of the 8 days we were there (guess the weather man hit that about right). And when it did rain, it started between 5-7pm and lasted between an hour and 2 hours.

I don't have much to add about the weather. We've got Fox News on at work and it looks like Erika is heading straight for Orlando (Monday/Tuesday arrival). But we've been in Disney during a hurricane. We've still got the letter the hotel slipped under the door :) One piece of advice I will add is to bring multiple pairs of shoes or maybe even rain boots. We were there for days of pouring rain - literally the first 3 days it did not stop. After the first 10 minutes (if that) our tennis shoes were soaked. And we only brought the one pair. Oh and get a water proof digital camera. You can still have a great time in the rain. I'm not sure what Disney does about lightening though...

Planning a trip anytime during July-September you should anticipate rain. It more than likely won't be as bad as you think it will. Usually afternoon showers. And depending on the hurricane you might have rain during the end of your trip.

It's all part of the fun of coming to Florida during the summer! If you are in the parks and it's storming...just remember that it's better to be at Disney world while it's raining vs back home at work

Yep. I don't worry about walking around in thunder and lightning or even torrential rain. If there is a hurricane about to hit I will stay inside the hotel as instructed but outside of that I just go with it and deal with being wet.

Rain is no problem. Lightning is a deadly problem. Seek shelter when there is lightning. Do not walk around in it!

I am terrified of lightning and have been stuck in Epcot gift shops for very long times. I remember one night being in the Magic Kingdom and heat lightning (I don't think it was raining) was lighting up the sky. Things were going on as normal and I was trying to be a good sport, but I just kept thinking how odd it was that I seemed to be the only one concerned as I was walking in Fantasyland.
Hopefully you will not have much lightning but, if you do, definitely try to be near an inside place where you don't mind spending a long time. The only thing nice about the gift shop was the nice fellow tourists we met from other countries.
