A surprise resort destination sounds like fun but how will you know which Magical Express bus stop to take.

Giddy!!!!
Coming out of lurkdom...I have been reading your reports for years, but I'm one of *those* that reads and doesn't comment. I do run, though, and I run Disney races a fair amount...and I love to talk about them.
For your knees - what kind of shoes are you wearing when you run? How old are they? The first thing I would tell anyone starting to run (beyond "get medical clearance") is to get fitted for running shoes at a running store. Seriously, having the proper shoes will make a huge difference. I'd also recommend maybe icing your knees after you run if they continue to bother you...that may help. The fact that you lift will GREATLY benefit your running - it should help to keep you from getting injured. A lot of runners do not do any kind of strength training...not good.
About Disney 5Ks - first, a warning: they are completely, totally addicting. Second, NO, you do not need a park ticket to participate. Your race registration will get you a spot in the race, a participant shirt, a finisher medallion, snacks at the finish line, on-course support (medical stations, volunteers, water stops, etc.)...things like that. It doesn't include park tickets or anything. I'm not sure which race you are looking at (or if you'd actually thought about that yet) but either way, they all start in lovely Disney parking lots. So no going through turnstyles, exactly.
Congrats on becoming a runner!
I did the couch to 5K between kid 2 and kid 3. I found running on soft ground was easier when I was starting out; so I would jog at the park. I should start that again....
Running can be so much fun. I was a want to be runner 5 years ago. I did a combo run walk. I think I used to run for 3 minutes then walk for a minute. I ran a 10K right about the time I stopped running regularly. Now I run with DH, we do a combo running walking. We do 45 seconds running 30 seconds walking. I love working out with him, but i did better runs alone. We don't run on a regular enough basis to really improve.
How great that you got to meet Gus's mom.
Running aren't good for the knees. So if your knees hurt you shouldn't be running I'm afraid.
Crossing my fingers that you get the ADR's you want tomorrow.
Do you have proper running shoes? This will be huge for your knees. Also I hear compression socks and knee braces can work wonders. You may invest the time or money into making some large gel packs to ice your knees down after your runs, they're probably just not used to it, and will be sore for some time until you build up to it. Keep it up!!
I second getting fitted for running shoes. Don't just go buy your favorite brand. Charlie and I went to the local running shoe store and we were fitted properly. Once you get fitted, you can purchase your shoes on-line if you want, since you will know exactly what you need. Good socks are also important. My favorites are Balegas, but what ever good athletic socks that work for you will be good. I learned about good socks from my dd's who run.

I did not get the 8:05 breakfast time that I wanted, but got the 8:15 instead..
Dee - I hope your knees start to feel better soon. Ice is probably the best thing to use right now. I always get some knee soreness when I start back running again after a layoff. Muscle soreness is to be expected whenever you start doing a new exercise, as you already know. Asics is a good brand of running shoe and if you have conquered the evil plantar fasciitis (pf) then your shoes might be fine. It took me a long time to cure my pf and I won't give up my running shoe brand and style. A good running shoe is supposed to last for about 500 miles. You are right that your strength training is good for running. The standard knee strengthening exercises are squats and lunges, and proper knee alinement is crucial. So you already have that in the bag. I used to run every other day. It gave my muscles a chance to recover while still maintaining fitness.
5K races are fun. The easiest to join for the first time is a friendly small local race. It is a great ego boost to cross that finish line.
Glad to hear that your ADR's were saved!
How awesome that you had a random DIS meet!! So cool that she recognized you!! You are a DIS celebrity!! Way to go for starting to run. The knees are what gets me too. I have heard this can happen if you don't have enough core strength...it sounds crazy but...maybe true? I keep hoping I can get in better shape first and then start running...that is what my DH did and has never had knee issues...but then...pretty sure some people just have knee issues anyway...sigh. But doing any of the Disney runs would be sooo awesome...I love seeing pictures of them.
YAHOOO it's all working out for you! SO HAPPY!!!!
Keee issues? i have plenty everyone is right. better shoes and knee braces.
Great picture! His mom and grandmother look so young! I guess Montana fresh air does that for a soul!
My knee advice...ice, ice, baby! Seriously, ice is your best friend for 20 minutes to help. Like everyone else has said, they are just letting you know that you are asking them to do something new and they need a moment to adjust! This is coming from a person who does no running, but loves her ice packs because her knees hurt...as a matter of fact, I was awakened by searing knee pain in the middle of the night last night...that was new for me...yeah! Hopefully acupuncture will help this afternoon.
Whoop!! 8:15. Can't complain!
Glad you got the 815!
We actually arrive within 2 mins of each other, so we will meet at the airport and get on together. She will obviously find out at the DME checkin point because they announce it and tell you what lane. But she will be surprised until then.
I think I will be surprised then too.....I just can't make up my mind. I have it narrowed down and called Disney again yesterday to check on discounts. Nothing in any of our choices, so it looks like we will be paying full price So that may make a huge difference! But you won't know until November
Good Morning D! Have a great day my friend!!
Sounds like you had a good day yesterday.
It's good to hear that you are going to listen to your body and be careful with your knees.
I'm glad my post reminded you to get your ADR. It's a bummer that you didn't get the time you wanted. But 10 minutes later doesn't sound too bad.
hope you have a great weekend!!!
Hi D~!
Way to go on starting to run! I agree with the others that say proper shoes are the key when running. With regards to the knee pain, are you running everyday? It is recommended to only run 3 times a week to allow your body time to recuperate, especially when you are first starting. I know all about knee issues. I was a cross country and track runner in high school. I gave it up after having surgery because I had severely damaged my one knee. I have had some discomfort over the years, but know the warning signs and take it easy when I have to.
I'm not sure if you knew that DH and I started training in mid-April for a 5K at the end of May. We used the Couch to 5K app and it was great. It used intervals of walking and running and slowly increased the amount of running while decreasing the amount of walking. Considering that I hadn't run in over 30 years, I didn't think I would be able to run very much, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I was able to achieve in the 6 weeks before our 5K. DH said he was giving up running after the 5K and did for about a month but has started running again once a week. I've continued to run 3 times a week, going back and redoing some of the middle training on the app in an effort to improve my pace. I still can't run the full distance, but it does seem to be getting easier. This month I started using an app called Strava that does a much better job of tracking pace. I have a basic route I have been following so it allows me to see if I am on track or slightly off my regular pace. I've increased my pace by just under 30 seconds in two weeks. Really loving the results!
Ultimately, I'd love to do a race at Disney! It is one of the things on my bucket list. I haven't done any research on them, but I have seen pictures and they look like a ton of fun. If you decide you want to do one, let me know and we can be running buddies at one!
Haven't been on here for a couple months and am now caught up! 3 trips in a year! That is so wonderful!
Reading this long ( before the trip daily life of D) report, gave me the courage to ask two of my friends if they would be interested on doing an all girls disney trip.... and they said yes!!!!!
It won't be til after my anniversary trip next fall, and then taking our youngest the following year... .. so 2 years away, but still! Thanks for the inspiration D!
Happy to hear you're running! How awesome is that! I'm looking into starting weight lifting but have no idea where to start. It's overwhelming but I am finally to a point in my life where I am done. I'm at my breaking point and need to get this weight off. No more excuses.
So happy to have caught up on your daily adventures. Who knew the "before the trip" report could be such a hoot to read!
Pixie Dust on your ADR!!! I really hope it works out for you.
Subtle hint for October 2016, right now they are looking for September, but I might be able to get them to delay the trip for a few weeks.
The 5k run should be interesting. Not only are we running, but its a Color Run. Needless to say by the end of the race, you are loaded with color. Hope you can figure out how your knees can hold up for you. Never thought about doing a Disney Race, maybe I need to really get serious and have some fun.
Have a fabulous weekend!!!
I posted on here just 4 minutes before your latest post on here D~
Be careful with your knees. You really don't want them to get unusable :
Yesterday I had an appointment with a Occupational Therapist. We talked about what I should have in my new car and that I want her to apply for this electric wheel so my manual wheel chair can be an electrical one in just a few minutes. I'm guessing I will have this wheel delivered when I get back from my trip
This is the wheel I'm talking about
Thanks I hope you have a great weekend as well.I hope you have a great weekend Lillian!
