Marathon Weekend 2016

The fact that you're seriously thinking about Dopey implies you've already decided to do Goofy! :D

The only thing I know for certain is that my WDW Marathon weekend will contain a full marathon in some capacity.

I haven't even brought Goofy up to my CFO (the husband), so I'm probably better off robbing a bank if I'm going to do Dopey, right?

Haha probably! I don't think I'll ever be so eager to hit the payment button as fast for such a large sum of money as I will on registration day!

Hi everyone!

I hope to run the 5K, 10K and half in 2016. :cheer2:
Can I say I will almost run a Dopey? :rotfl::jumping1::rotfl:

It will be my first rD weekend and I'll be going alone for the first time - first rD and first solo Disney trip! :earseek:
It is exciting and scary at the same time. So it would be comforting knowing if there is someone in the same situation.

Well, please let me know. I’d love to meet new friends during this first-first trip January 2016.
I'll be purchasing the Pasta in the Park Party for the January 9 - anyone in for a Illumination extravaganza? :rainbow:

Oh, another thing: is this Race Retreat worth the money?

I did the Space Coast half so long ago. Love the course.

Not to tempt you with more--but did you see the Inaugural Cocoa Beach Half Marathon? The medal is an I Dream of Jeannie bottle. (not an actual bottle)

It's the month before Space Coast.
I am going to have to search this one.

Geez, if you're going to get up early three days in a row, you might as well make it four. :thumbsup2

You're probably right! :hyper:
But I never ever eeever ran a Marathon...and it will be only my second half! I don't think I can make it!

Of course you can! Anyone can finish a marathon as long as they follow a good training plan. You start slow, build your mileage and confidence along the way, and before you know it, you're running a marathon. We all started out in the same place. If we can do it, you can too.

For those of you that just aren't ready to do all 4 days due to logistics, training, cost, etc., you can always join our informal Dopey 2018 group. Double anniversary year. Hopefully all construction issues resolved. Maybe no more water treatment plant route....that would be magical.
Think about it, you've got 33 months to train and save!!!

(has someone started a Dopey 2018 thread yet?!!)

You almost convince me...hahaha! :D

But I might just join the Dopey 2018, as Slogger here suggested!

Pixie Heart--- it will be an awesome time whenever you decide to do it (but even more "awesomer" if you join us in 2018).
All of us had never ever everrrrrrrrrr run a marathon at some point in our lives too. I would have laughed out loud 5 years ago if somebody told me I 'd be running marathons. But once you do it, you will always be a "marathoner"

Alright.

I seriously won't decide on Dopey until the minute registration opens - or Goofy, at that point.

BUT. I ran three miles today, am going to run five tomorrow and then eight on Saturday. Off day Sunday. Cross-training and "extreme cardio" (what I can the summit climber or stair machine, or even high-resistance eliptical) and then I'll run three miles on Thursday, six miles on Friday and then 10 miles on Saturday.

If I don't feel like absolute garbage, I'll give extremely strong consideration to Dopey.

If I do this, I'm guessing I probably need to get to back-to-back-to-back-to-back running adding up to a minimum of 27-28 miles a week? Or would 25 miles a week be enough? After a few weeks, I would probably swap out the 3 mile run and make up that distance with speed work.

I just finished reading Higdon's "Marathon" book - like, literally about 5 minutes ago. So, maybe that's why I'm high on motivation right now.

All the feedback you are hearing is absolutely true. If you can run a 5k, 10k and then a half marathon then with some distance training you could do a marathon. There are some great training programs that can help you get the distance you need. Set a plan and you can do it. There is plenty of time to be ready by January. The Dopey Medal could be yours. Good luck!

To finish Dopey (or any marathon, really) strong and injury free, you need to work your way up to a peak of about 35 miles a week. That week would be something like a 3-6 mile run on Tuesday, 8-10 on Wed, 4-5 on Thur, and 20 on Saturday. During your training, it's not a bad idea to do some back to back longer runs, but you don't need to do four days in a row with long run as the last two, especially as a newer runner. That's a good way to get hurt. A good training plan should also include 4-6 weeks of hills once a week and then 4-6 weeks of speed work once a week. Hills build strength and endurance, speed work builds, well, speed. :)

I just want YOU to know that I'm not super considering this whole Dopey thing.

Even if it may seem like it.

I'm not.

OK, so maybe.

I thought Disney doesn't recommend actually running all 4 races all out, right? I can't imagine pushing as hard as I could for that many miles, that many days in a row.

Then again, my first half marathon is in Sept. HA.

I can do the 3 and 6 miles no problem now, so I'm not worried about those two. It's just the build-up of miles.

I even tried to see how I'd have to go to do a 16:00/mile, so I'm not really worried about that either.

It's most likely that - with the exception of the full - I'll get up, drive over, run that day's race and then go back to the house and chill in the pool or the hot tub and take it easy. After the full? Oh, I'm going straight into the parks.

But, honestly. I'm not doing Dopey in 2016. Nope. Not at all.

Have you looked at Higdon's Dopey plan? Or the Marathon one? With it being so far out you are already doing quite high milege. I'm working off his Novice Supreme Marathon training guide which I'll finish in October then top that off with the last 8 or so weeks of his Dopey Training plan and currently I'm only running Tues 1.5miles Weds 3miles Thurs 1.5miles and then 3miles as my long run on Saturday. Of course all this is only relevant if you're considering Dopey... Which you are not... Or are you?? It's all up in the air now :P
