Wait this doesn't have alcohol? Oct 2014 TR *Updated 4/30*

this ride and it was honestly so intimidating especially going up the first hill. You are literally flat on your back going up:faint:. I couldn’t even enjoy the music I picked because I was freaking out. Honestly, after the first climb it wasn’t too bad. In fact I LOVED this ride. It was such a rush and it was definitely one I wanted to do again.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love that ride!!!!

Next, we decided to ride Transformers. I was really excited to ride this. My mom has been talking about this ever since my parents took my brother to Universal Hollywood after his Marine Corps graduation. This was a great ride for express pass because we were able to walk right on. Again, this ride was awesome.
I haven't been there since this one opened. I can't wait to do it myself! I've heard great things about it.

The big beer combined with the no food was not the best combo. We wanted to ride the Simpsons ride. I am not sure if it was the Buzz or what, but we loved this ride.
Big beer, combined with no food, combined with motion simulator ride... I can only imagine how I'd feel after that one... :faint:

At this point, we had made our way all the way back to the London waterfront. I was planning on saving this for the next day but, I just couldn’t resist going inside for just a peek:rotfl:.
Hey, seems like a good time to take a leisurely look around and get some of that out of the way before you're rushing off to try the rides!

When I last left off, we decided to take just a peek of Diagon Alley. I have some background about my love for Harry Potter. I started reading the books when I was 12 and I fell in love. This is my absolute favorite book series and I have read them all at least 5 times, read the seventh book in under 24 hours, and went to all the midnight releases from book 5 on. I feel like I have been waiting my whole life to see these things in person and I was like a little girl giddy with excitement to see fantasy become reality.

We approached the London waterfront from the Men in Black side and saw a fence was up and team members we standing outside with a line to get in. I had heard about needing a return ticket to enter WWoHP during the higher crowd times but I didn’t think we would have this problem in October. I told my dad to go find out what the deal was and he came back very quickly and said we could go right in. I was very confused about what was happening. We walked right past the line, showed our hotel key, and were let right in. I don’t know what the line was about or why we were able to bypass it but I was grateful. It was 3:30 at this point and the park was closing at 5 for Halloween Horror Nights.

The first thing we saw was the façade for Grimmauld Place. From this point on I am going to assume the reader knows what I am talking about for the Harry Potter stuff and if you don’t know please read the books they are amazing:teeth:. Now I am a total doofus and didn’t take a picture in front of the right door. See, I assumed that 12 Grimmauld place wouldn’t be visible because, in the series it is protected by a charm making it only visible for those who know about it. Anyways, I took a picture at 11 assuming this was as close as I could get to 12 only to realize later that 12 is there; as you can see in the first picture. I felt dumb, oh well.

Moving one, we made our way to the Knight Bus. Now, this is a really cool interactive area. There is the Knight Bus conductor and a shrunken head. You can take a picture with the conductor and talk to both of them. I think the shrunken head asked me where I was from. I always say Chicago because, one I feel like that is my home and not Michigan & two I am so used to saying it that I don’t even think to say something else. The shrunken head made a funny but, corny joke about the Chicago Bears. I had a lot of fun interacting with both of them and would have stuck around but people started to gather around once they saw it was more than just a photo op so we moved on.

We walked through the brick wall and my jaw hit the floor. I have seen pictures and watched the NBC special about the building of Diagon Alley but nothing could prepare me for how amazing this place truly is. We immediately went left into the Leaky Cauldron as we still hadn’t eaten and it had been 6 hours since breakfast.

I was pretty shocked how empty this place was but I guess it was a weird time to be eating. Here is a picture of the ordering area.

[url=https://flic.kr/p/pEDcKR]

Having been to England, this place felt very authentic to muggle pubs I have been in. There are little details everywhere and you completely forget you are in central Florida. Now, I am not a big fan of traditional English food so I wasn’t too thrilled to eat here but, I was ecstatic to get to try some Butterbeer. My dad ordered the Pub Style Bangers which was a sausage on a bun with wedge fries. He was not very impressed with this one but, at this point we would have eaten anything.I ordered the chicken sandwich which was actually really yummy.

[url=https://flic.kr/p/qjZr1e]

We both order the Butterbeer for our drink. I asked my dad if he was sure that is what he wanted and his response was, "yes I want to try the famous Butterbeer". The next part, after you order, is really well organized and something I wish Disney would do during busy meal periods. You take your order number to a team member and they seat you. This eliminates trying to vie for a table and it was so orderly. When we sat down my dad takes his first sip of Butterbeer and says, “wait, this doesn’t have alcohol.” Thankfully, I hadn’t yet taken a sip or I would have spit it out. I knew he would want a beer and, that was why I was so surprised he ordered Butterbeer. He did enjoy it but I thought it was pretty funny. Now, I on the other hand, knew exactly what I was getting and I have been wanting to try a Butterbeer since Hogsmeade opened. This delectable drink met every expectation. It is super sweet but, I loved that about it and could seriously drink this every day of my life. Side note, I made a homemade version for the boys on Halloween and while it was very good this version was TOO sweet. Overall, this experience is by far the best counter service I have had and I didn’t think that was possible after Be Our Guest. I would highly recommence this even if the food is unappealing just to sit down and have a Butterbeer.

Up Next, exploring some of Diagon Alley and Islands of Adventure.

Nice! Glad you didn't have to wait. Was it maybe because you were staying on property?

Kind of like a rolling closure at WDW... day guests might not be able to enter MK, but resort guests can.

From this point on I am going to assume the reader knows what I am talking about for the Harry Potter stuff
Yeah, I have no idea... :rolleyes1

That is nice. It would make things much simpler!

I like the Butterbeer. We got them a couple of years ago in WWoHP. We tried both the regular one and the frozen one... I definitely liked frozen better. I'm glad you had such a good experience eating there. Especially with it being a menu that wasn't ideal for your taste.

That is really the only thing I would assume but they never actually said it. It was weird but nice we could just walk in.

Yeah, I have no idea... :rolleyes1
Lol, no problem you can still enjoy the report.

That is nice. It would make things much simpler!
It really does. They had this procedure at both Harry Potter dining locations and the Simpsons QS. It made everything much less stressful.

Silly guy, at least he enjoyed it.

Its funny, I never tried the frozen. I would probably like it since I liked Le Fou's brew and the regular but I didn't even think about.

Yay for Harry Potter! How funny that your Dad thought that ButterBeer was actual beer! :rotfl:
I know, I tried to explain they didn't want to make their signature drink not available for kids but what can I say the guy loves his beer.

After our yummy lunch, we set out to explore Diagon Alley. I did not take many pictures because I was honestly so taken aback with everything there, I was just soaking it all in. The level of detail they put in here was so amazing and intricate it would take forever to see every last thing.

By this time the park was set to close in an hour so we headed toward the front of the park. We went back to the hotel for a slight rest and for me to call the boys to check in. After our short break, we were going back to the parks to explore Islands of Adventure. This is the biggest advantage to staying on property, we were able to go back to our hotel for an hour with very little travel time. I would never take an hour break at Disney because it wouldn’t be worth it but, here it was so easy. Our first stop, once we got to Citywalk, was to grab a drink. I have pretty much been pregnant or nursing since I was four months from my 22 birthday so, I rarely drink. I took this opportunity to be able to indulge without the kids and I have always wanted to try Fat Tuesday. We went to the little outdoor bar and I didn’t know what to get. The bartender was great and let me have a sample of everything. He also gave me a wristband so I wouldn’t have to be ID’d again. By this point I had a wristband for drinking, MNSSHP, and to get into Diagon Alley. He made a comment about me having a fun weekend. I have to say the drink was just okay but, now I can say I’ve done that.

We entered Island of Adventure and got a picture.

We rode Hulk first. This is a fun ride but nothing extraordinary.

Next we rode Spiderman which is pretty much the same ride as Transformers. I do like the Transformers ride better though. We skipped the rides at Cartoon Lagoon as I did not fell like getting wet and next went to Jurassic Park. I have great affection for this ride. My parents took me and my brother to Universal Hollywood before we moved away from California and I loved this ride so much I think we did it three times in a row.

After, the ride we had an hour until the park closed and I was itching to see Hosgmeade. We got in line for our picture and waited and waited and then waited some more. There was only one family at the counter and they wanted to view and edit every picture from their trip. I was getting really impatient but, I also really wanted our picture. I think we waited 20 minutes to finally add our picture. I was not happy but, at least I got it. Walking into Hogsmeade Village was a little anticlimactic after Diagon Alley. Not to say that Hogsmeade is bad but, Diagon Alley is just so much cooler. It really is very pretty and well done and if I was judging it by itself I would have been blown away. I almost wished I had stuck to the plan not gone to Diagon Ally this day. Seeing Hogwarts for the first time was a little surreal and it is so beautiful at night with multicolor lights shining on it.

I definitely made up for the lack of pictures earlier here. I needed to ride the Forbidden Journey so we hopped in the line which said 30 minute wait. We only waited 15 minutes though. The first section you go through is the greenhouse. There is not much to see especially when the line is shorter but still so beautifully themed. It is aged and rusty an totally authentic.

You next go from the greenhouse to the castle and enter a hallway which ends at the entrance to Dumbleore’s office.

You then go through another hallway with the moving and talking pictures and wow, just wow. The pictures are textured to look like actual paintings but, then they start moving and talking. I was totally in awe. You never knew what was an actual paining and which ones would just start talking.

Continued in next post

Next was Dumbledore’s office which had so many trinkets and objects. I was so distracted looking that I forgot pictures for the most part in here.

Then, we went into the defense against the dark arts classroom and Harry, Ron, and Hermione talk to you. It is a really cool effect here and Dumbleore’s office.

The last room you enter is the Gryffindor Common room going past the painting of the fat lady (if you haven’t read the books, that is what she is called not me being insensitive).

After that part, I think this is where they separate parties and I had no idea what there method was here. We went from two line into three and it was a little confusing. After the separation, you see the sorting hat and enter your ride vehicle.

I was a little nervous about this ride and the Gringott's one because I read that people of size had problems fitting. I knew from research that there were modified seats but, even when my dad was a skinny Marine he had problems fitting into over-the-shoulder harness because of his height and broad shoulders. I think he was told the seat had to click three times. He got it twice and then the team member got the last click. This ride was so freaking fantastic, I don’t think I can convey its awesomeness in words. Ever since my first ride on Tower of Terror, that has been my favorite ride and nothing has been able to top it. Tower of Terror has now been dethroned. It literally flings you all over the place is more thrilling than any roller coaster I have been on. I could ride this over and over but unfortunately the park was almost closed so we move on.

I really wanted to check out Honeydukes and get a chocolate frog. The store was pretty cool but I wanted to hurry up since was closing. The chocolate frog was $10 which is a little crazy but the chocolate was very good and it was pretty big. I thought it was pretty fun that when I went to check out and gave the cashier cash he said, “paying with muggle money I see.” I love how they keep the experience even up until the last minute.

After, we left the park we headed back to Citywalk to find a place to eat. We settled on Vivo Italian Kitchen. It was packed in there but my dad and I sat at the kitchen bar. I have no idea if that is what it is called but it’s a bar where you can watch the chefs cook. My dad’s first job was a line cook at a fine dining restaurant and his passion is cooking so, if there is ever an opportunity to sit at one of these he will. It was an absolutely fantastic experience here. The chef came over to us and gave us recommendations. He gave us a lot of personalized attention and, I am so glad we sat here. I got the braised beef risotto and OMG :thumbsup2 was it delicious. It was cooked perfectly and so rich with flavor and it just hit the spot. My dad got a pasta dish that he thought was very good. The past is made there and you can definitely taste the freshness. If we ever get back to Universal I know I will come back here. For dessert, the chef recommended and orange cake which was the executive chef’s grandmother’s recipe. I was skeptical as I don’t generally like citrus desserts but when the chef recommends, you order. This was another amazing item and we devoured the entire thing. It was warm and moist, drizzled with a sauce that was to die for. I ordered two things I never would have normally but they were both great and I highly recommend this place. After, dinner we walked around had a few drinks at one of the outdoor bars and just relaxed. It was so nice to sit near the water and chat. See, going into this trip I was worried we would run out of things to talk about before we left Chicago:rotfl2:. My dad and I though very similar in personality, do not have much in common. Thankfully, we never ran out of things to talk about during the trip and it was so nice to get closer. We went back to hotel about midnight for a good night’s rest because the next day was going to start very early.

Lol, no problem you can still enjoy the report.
Ok, confession time. I'm 33. When HP came out and it was all the rage, I just felt like it was a little too juvenile for me. By the time I got a little older and thought it seemed good enough to check it out, I was so far behind, that I just didn't really care to try to catch up on it.

That said, I did see the first HP movie on TV a few weeks ago. I did enjoy it and I'd like to see more. I'm sure as the kids get older we will.

It was pretty cool when I saw the movie though. I was impressed with Hogsmeade when I saw it in person, but I just didn't know what anything was. Having finally seen the movie, I totally get where the actual HP fans are coming from. it's pretty amazing how well they really nailed it.

I have never been to Fat Tuesday... might need to add that one to the list. I went with some friends about 10 years ago during Universal's Mardi Gras celebrations. We spent several late nights at Pat O'Brien's at Citywalk. That was a fun week. I think. I really can't remember much.

We rode Hulk first. This is a fun ride but nothing extraordinary.
Blasphemy! I love this ride!!!

I don't blame you a bit for skipping cartoon lagoon. Those rides are fun, but they absolutely soak you to the core!

I love JP. Just wish they'd have stuck with a vehicle like the movie. I mean the movie was a ride in and of itself. How could they have missed that???

Ok, again, maybe if I'd seen the movies it would have meant more to me. I wasn't all that impressed by it. I thought it was a great ride, don't get me wrong. But I don't typically do motion simulator rides well and those broom chase scenes affected me more than most. I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Dinner sounds incredible! I'm glad you had such a great experience there!

And that's what it is all about! I'm glad you had some quality time together and were able to grow a little closer on this trip. :thumbsup2

Sounds like a magical end to the day!
It was :thumbsup2

That's okay its not for everybody. My DH doesn't really care about HP and we were about 12 when it started getting popular. But I made him watch all the movies :rotfl2:

That said, I did see the first HP movie on TV a few weeks ago. I did enjoy it and I'd like to see more. I'm sure as the kids get older we will.
Yeah, when they get to the age it would be a fun thing to get into together

It really is. The nice thing about Diagon Alley is that I think anybody could appreciate it without knowing a single things about Harry Potter I feel like Hogsmeade is more for people who really get the stories.

I have never been to Fat Tuesday... might need to add that one to the list. I went with some friends about 10 years ago during Universal's Mardi Gras celebrations. We spent several late nights at Pat O'Brien's at Citywalk. That was a fun week. I think. I really can't remember much.

lol That is how I felt about the next night. Man that place can be fun.

Blasphemy! I love this ride!!!

Sorry, I guess I just don't get it  don't hate me :bitelip:

I don't blame you a bit for skipping cartoon lagoon. Those rides are fun, but they absolutely soak you to the core!
That's what I heard, no thanks.

I love JP. Just wish they'd have stuck with a vehicle like the movie. I mean the movie was a ride in and of itself. How could they have missed that???
oh your totally right:sad2:.

That picture room was awesome!
How do they do it??? amazing

Ugh, thankfully I o not have motion sickness with anything and I just loved getting thrown every which way:rotfl:. It would still be my favorite even if the theme weren't HP.

Dinner sounds incredible! I'm glad you had such a great experience there!
It was highly recommend:thumbsup2.

Thanks, my dad and I have exactly one thing in common so it was nice to bond.

October 18, 2014

This morning came way too soon for us. I think the alarm went off at 5:30. We got ready quickly and I needed a coffee before we went anywhere. Luckily, there was a Starbucks in our hotel right downstairs from our room. Caffeinated up we made our way to the boat dock. The plan was to take the boat over to Universal but there was a girl with a rickshaw (I think they’re called) and she offered us a ride. This is a free service offered by Universal but tips are how these people survive. My dad made a joke about being to heavy for this little girl to drive us and said we would take the boat. Apparently, she really wanted to drive us because she tried to convince us that she was strong enough. We felt kind of bad and knew she just wanted to make some tips so we went with her. This was a really beautiful and relaxing way to get to the parks. Bonus, we beat the boat over and we ahead of everyone to the turnstiles. It was a little chilly this morning and we made it to the gates just after 6. Only one hour to wait:rotfl2:. While waiting, there was this really cute British family behind us that were a little clueless but, so excited to see the Harry Potter stuff.

Soon enough, the first family of the day were ready to let us in. I am not sure what the procedure is here but the family had two little girls and the oldest, maybe 8, had to read something over the microphone and no one could hear her:confused3. I was the first person through the gates and followed behind the first family to Diagon Alley. Soon though, there were crazy people practically running to get past us. I felt bad passing this little family who technically should be first so, even though they were walking soooo slow, I stayed behind. We finally made our way into Diagon Alley and our first thing was to hit Escape from Gringotts. We had nothing to stash in the lockers so we went right in and seriously my breath was taken away.

It was hard to photograph because there was no line and I honestly wanted to get on. After the main bank portion you start to head underground past vaults and Goblin offices. The first room you enter is Bill Weasely’s office. He says they will show us around or something and you enter a second room. Here you wait for your elevator down an there is a little video about ride safety. The elevator portion of this ride is amazing. It is completely simulated but it feels so real. Then you enter the final line to get on your vehicle. We basically walked right on this ride and I so happy because we were the first ride vehicle of the day to go out.

[url=https://flic.kr/p/qjRqim]

This ride was pretty cool, not gonna lie. It’s a part simulator, part roller coaster and it was a decent length. After we got off, I was going to go thoroughly explore Diagon Alley fully expecting a ridiculous wait for the ride but it was only at 20 minutes so we had to ride again. Half of the outdoor queue area was open and I was a little scared that the wait would be longer but it was only 20. Since there was a line I had pliantly of time to take pictures.

Right before you enter the hallway before Bill Weasely’s office they were directing people to these old fashioned looking cameras for a picture. I guess since there is no ride photo they still wanted to monetize the ride somehow. This wasn’t operating first thing but now the cameras weren’t working:cool:. Oh well no picture for us.

After another harrowing escape from Gringott’s we wanted to check the place out.

I so badly wish I could handle ride simulators. This ride sounds very fun, but I know that it would make me very very very sick. Awesome that you got two rides in a row though!

oh no sorry you get sick. It is a very fun ride. Definitely worth the walk through if you every get over there just to see the bank.

Looks like a great morning. I hope the rickshaw driver got her tip for beating the boat.

I'm glad you got a couple of rides in! That's not too bad at all, whether the wait was 20 minutes or a little bit longer, that still isn't half bad. And to have an opportunity to check the queue area out in a little more detail... well worth it! :thumbsup2

She for sure got a tip for carting our big butts around :rotfl2:. I honestly thought I would only get on once because wait would be at an hour when I get off so 20 minutes was definitely doable.

*Warning I took a TON of pictures so this section of the TR is pretty much all picture, enjoy!
We Started off by walking around an getting pictures of the amazing props.

I went to the money exchange place to get a bank note. The denominations were 10 & 20 I think. You can use this money throughout the WWoHP or just keep it as a souvenir which I did. There is also a goblin that actually interacts with guests. It was a little awkward because I didn’t know what to say but the animatronics are simply amazing. The fact that goblins aren’t real is really the only indication that these aren’t actual living beings.

Next, we went to Ollivander’s to see the wand choosing ceremony. The interior of the building is again so amazing and detailed. The show is cute but not something I would wait too long for or really do again unless I had the kids.

After, feeling pretty good about what we had done I found a team member to ask when the first show would take place. He said not until 9. At this point it was 8:15 an there wasn’t much else to do. We headed out to go find some breakfast. There was a little New York style deli right outside the London Waterfront so we went there. The park was officially open and the deli was crowded. We waited awhile. The food was okay nothing to write home about. We both got deli sandwiches which is weird for breakfast but I didn’t care I was starving. At about 8:45 we headed back in for the show. One thing I noticed when entering Diagon Alley as that you actually hear the bricks sliding past one another as you enter, pretty cool and again amazing attention to detail.

Wow... what a nice touch!

Ok, didn't this used to be in the IoA section of WWoHP? Did they move it over to Diagon Alley?

It's pretty cool very similar to the shrunken head at the knight bus.

It was there and I think still is. I guess the one there was very small so waits were long. The one they have here can run multiple shows and accommodate more people. Plus in the books/movies Ollivanders was never at Hogsmeade just Diagonal Alley.
