I am planning a retur trip to Disney and would like to somehow fit in a couple days at Universal for those who have done this how did you book your vacation. like how many days at Universal and where did you stay? How did you get from Universal to a Disney resort hotel when you were done at Universal? thank you.

I was close to spending 3 days at Universal then 8 days WDW this summer. But the difference in cost spoiled it for me. The cost of WDW tickets goes so low after a week!

Because Universal only has two parks, versus WDW's six (including waterparks), we always spend less time at Universal, eve though we LOVE both. And we always stay on property for both-Royal Pacific Resort at Universal;Pop Century at Disney. The first time, we were in Orlando for 5 nights, did 1 at Universal. We were there 14 nights last time, and 5 of those were at Universal. This time, we are going for 10 nights, with 2 of those at Universal. As for transportation, we never rent a car so we just take a taxi from Universal to Disney, costs about $55 with tip. This may not be feasible for you, but when we are in Orlando we pretty much only do the parks (with one shopping trip), so our transportation cost for the week are usually less than $200.

For us, the benefit of the unlimited Express Pass that comes with the on site hotel at Universal is worth the extra money for the hotel (avg price is usaully around $269/night versus $120/night at Pop), and the hotel itself is beautiful.

We will be 7 nights at AKL and 2 nights at Hard Rock this coming Christmas. 4th Disney trip 2nd Universal. If we hadn't previously visited Universal and specifically the wizarding world of Harry Potter, I would have only booked 1 night at Universal

While I have not done a split stay, if you stay on site at one of the 3 main resorts (the new "value" resort does not include this perk) you get the aforementioned Unlimited Express Pass. So, with two days and the Unlimited Express Pass you will be able to see just about everything. We love Universal and have spent the last two vacations there, at the Royal Pacific, as opposed to visiting Disney.

You didn't mention if you have been there before, if not, it's an entirely different animal from a ride perspective. Disney is quite mild in this respect, whereas at Universal you will have several "thrill" rides that are actually thrilling. Something to keep in mind depending on your ride tolerance.

My husband and myself just booked 4 nights at Royal Pacific with a 3 day park to park pass, then we are going to Port Orleans French Qtr at Disney for 6 nights. We do not want to rent a car and will be flying in. I have a couple of questions:
1. How much will it cost to take a cab from MCO to Royal Pacific?
2. Does anyone know if there is transportation from Sanford airport to Royal Pacific and how much it would cost and how long it would take ?
3. Is the early entry for both parks at Universal or just one of them for resort guests?
4. Any other tips would be welcome. This is only our second time visiting Universal.
Thanks

We did this in November. We spent 6 days/5 nights at WDW first at CBR. On our check-out day at WDW, we spent some time at the parks and decided around 5pm that we'd head over to the Royal Pacific, our hotel at Universal. We took the park bus back to CBR and got our bags from bell services where they were being stored. We asked the bellman for a taxi and there were a couple waiting in the parking lot that he flagged over. This worked out much better than arranging a shuttle with Mears - the cab was $28 including tip (no per person charge), it was a quick 20 minute drive, and allowed us to leave WDW at our leisure. We then spent 3 nights at Royal Pacific - the first night when we got there we did City Walk, the next day we did US, next day we did IOA, and on our last day we visited both parks repeating our favorites. We took a car service to the airport that Royal Pacific has on stand by - didn't have to arrange in advance and it was a $55 flat rate fee. Everything worked out well, except next time we'll likely only do 2 nights at Universal - we were a little bored on our last day trying to kill time. We managed to do all rides twice.

I do think its worth it to switch to a Universal hotel. Coming from a WDW moderate resort, we found Royal Pacific to be a bit nicer and more luxurious. The pool was nicer too. It was also a nice change of pace to be able to walk to the parks and City Walk. Just felt more relaxed here. Staying onsite at Universal also gave us early entry which came in handy, as well as unlimited express pass which we used a lot even though crowds were relatively low.

Hi! We are doing 1-2 days at Universal, then 1-2 days at Disney, so I am looking into all of these questions as well. The Universal Hotels have transportation to the Sanford airport, for our party of six it was expensive, like maybe $50 per person? Since we are getting a car after our Orlando time and driving to the beach, it turned out to be cheaper to get a rental car for the full week, even though we will barely be using it during our park days, once I added up transportation to/from airpport and in between Universal and Disney. So once you add up your transport costs, check rental pricing, you may be surprised!

Early entry is for both Universal Parks. Our favorite easy tip for Universal (and Disney) is that early morning and late evening are the best times at the parks. We've been to the Universal Wizarding World of HP at park opening, and after an hour it was too packed to move, but if you go back after dinner everyone is gone. As more of Disney regulars, we feel like the crowds are harder to manage at Universal, so we're trying Express Pass this time. Also, we've stayed at Royal Pacific (Universal) once, and found the breakfast not worth it...crowded, expensive, and mostly carbs. The hotel however was lovely and very close to the parks. You'll be so pleasantly surprised compared to Disney how fast you get around your hotel and to the park...on foot!

To the original poster...as I plan our combination trip, there is a lot to figure out, some of the things I am keeping in mind as I consider which hotel for which days are: Benefits of Royal Pacific (Express Pass, if you want it, but it makes your hotel room way more expensive than you can get at Universal's Cabana Bay). If you don't want Express Pass, Cabana Bay is quite a bit cheaper and reviews are good. Or if you want it, work out how many days you want Express Pass for...it could be cheaper to stay at Cabana Bay and purchase your Express Pass separately. In general I am finding the Disney Value resorts a bit cheaper than the Universal resorts, so that's something to think about for your transfer day...stay in the cheaper hotel! But, consider Extra Magic Hours too, if you want that benefit at Disney. I did find out that you get your Extra Magic Hours benefit and, at Universal, your Express Pass benefit, on both your check in and check out days. It's a LOT to figure out, I've been working on it for a week, but it will be worth it in the end; I like to make sure I have it all planned out the best, cheapest way. I would also say, with the early entry benefit at Universal (Cabana or Royal Pacific), it might make sense to stay there the night before you will be touring there...so you don't have to get up at 6am to get out of Disney and over to Universal by 8am, for example. Royal Pacific is an easy 10 minute walk to the park gate, Cabana Bay (I have heard) is about a 10-15 minute bus ride.

Park tickets for 1-2 days like this are expensive, and it doesn't seem like there is any getting around it. Which is why I want to maximize our in-park time by staying on site and using hotel benefits like early and late hours and Express Pass. That's what is making switching hotels worth it to me (and the time saver from the drive between parks).

Finally, I have learned that you can get an Alamo Car Rental from the Disney Car Car center (accessible via Disney shuttles), however it is surcharged, so again it was cheaper for us to rent from the airport for the full 9 days of our trip rather than try to rent from Disney and not use a rental car during the 3-day park portion of our trip.

We're taking off tomorrow for 3 nights at Universal and 4 nights at Disney ... on site both locations. I did some touring plan research and just decided to pretty much split it down the middle in terms of the hotel stays. I could likely have gotten away with 2 at Universal but since it's our first time on site over there I didn't want to rush.

Early entry is for both Universal Parks.

Currently early entry is only for IOA. In the Fall, it was only at Universal. They can and do switch up which park has early entry. It's only been both parks during peak times.

We are doing seven nights at Disney VGF followed by 1-2 at Universal Hard Rock. I think you definitely want the express pass at Universal and all three hotels that include it are great. Staying one night at either resort gets you early entry both days so that can give you two full days at the parks if you get up early to change resorts. We are renting a car.

Thanks for all the tips. I will continue to watch this thread. I am wondering if a 3 day pass for the two Universal parks is to long and we will get board. We choose to do Universal first and then Disney second so we can take advantage of Disneys Magical Express back to the airport and check our luggage in the resort lobby instead of checking it at the airport. We really, really don't want to rent a car and have to drive. We also don't want to pay the parking fee at Royal Pacific. (I was told it was an additional $20.00 per day)
Thanks for the heads up on breakfast at Royal Pacific. I think we are going to just bring bagels and peanut butter for breakfast at Royal Pacific because we have the dining plan when we get to Disney which will be a lot of food.

But the difference in cost spoiled it for me. The cost of WDW tickets goes so low after a week!

Doing a two-park trip is expensive, that's for sure. The shorter stays are so much more expensive per day.

But by skipping out, you're missing out. Plus, it's not a huge amount to go from a few day ticket to an annual pass, if you end up loving Uni. Now that we did that and get renewals, we get our Preferred passes for the cost of, I believe, a 3 day ticket now...

OP our first trip to WDW was 10 days and Uni was 4. We stayed properly onsite at both. We actually planned 2 full days and 1 partial day at Uni, but our tickets were some crazy deal so we had access to more days, and we used them. We LOVED Uni. We didn't realize we would feel that way, and had arranged to go back to WDW to finish out our Orlando trip...we nearly missed our dining reservations at Sanaa because we did NOT want to leave Uni (and there were serious issues with AKL checkin but whatever).

We've had two 8 day stays at Uni (and other shorter ones of course) ; now, I'll be up front and say that neither of them were used to their potential because both times people got sick from bugs we encountered before leaving home or while at WDW. But we know ourselves and know we wouldn't have gotten bored; we've done 8 nights at Disneyland before without a problem, so it's what we like to do. And the resorts at Uni are sooo nice. Get bored in the park, go back to the resort and have a lovely time (as long as you're not visiting in January while we're there, because if you are then it will be 21 degrees and you will be freezing to death...that goes the same for our WDW trips in winter).

We are doing 12 nights at Disney and 4 nights at Universal in June. We were originally planning to do Universal first and end our trip at Disney. After talking to many different people we decided to do Universal after Disney. Of course it depends how much thrill riding you plan to do, if you are staying in a Deluxe at Universal and if you are staying in a Deluxe at Disney. But, as a general rule there is more room in the hotel rooms at Universal to spread out and I did not want my kids to get used to the Express Pass at Universal and then be upset about having to stand in long lines at Disney. Made sense for us to end with Universal.

Thanks for that clarification! We've only been during peak times.

We are doing 3 days at Universal and then 10 days at WDW in August. We chose to do Disney after UO because I would rather spend my bday at Disney! I don't feel we can go wrong though. It will be a nice change of pace for us as we are use to Disneyland and Universal in California...a MUCH milder park. We are staying on property at both destinations. The unlimited express pass will be worth its weight in gold as both our kids are adrenaline junkies! We are renting a car because the cost for a family of four plus luggage would be more otherwise.

We prefer to do Uni after WDW because Uni is just more relaxing. We can go at a slower pace and its more compact. Not as much to see and do. It's a nice way to unwind after the constant on the go at WDW.
