Welcome to another Fred and Wilma adventure :welcome:

Meet your host - My name is Joh and I’m a Walt Disney World-aholic.

It has been 86 days since my last Disney trip. I am a serious planner, with more than a little touch of OCD. Just call me Monica! It has to be said that I am not good when things don't go to plan but my laid-back DH normally helps keep me sane. I have been known to enjoy a cocktail - or two.

Exhibit A ;)

And Exhibit B (together with my friend, Barb) :thumbsup2

Normally, at this point I would wax lyrical about my favourite things at WDW, my favourite rides and characters, where we are going to eat and, more importantly, what I am planning to drink!!! However, this trip is slightly different since we’re not going to Disney World. But more about that in a minute.

Meanwhile, meet my long suffering husband Gary.

Gary indulges my love of Disney World but it’s no secret that he doesn’t have the same all-encompassing passion for the place. He likes the food - and the weather - oh, and Typhoon Lagoon! Gary is not a planner, in fact it's fair to say he takes almost no interest in that side of things. However, invariably, while I am planning the itinerary I will always ask him for his input and his response his nearly always the same - "just tell me where to be and when". On our second trip to WDW, we went through the usual pre-trip stuff and he showed no interest, until we arrived and he asked me when we were going to Typhoon Lagoon, then proceeded to sulk because I hadn't actually planned for us to go there. So now he knows, if he wants to do something, he needs to speak up! Gary is the brains behind this trip – this is one of the things on his bucket list.

Here are the two of us at WDW last year - in case you are interested, Gary is saying "Shut up and look at the camera woman!"

Time for a back story (there always has to be one, right?)

A couple of years ago, we took a cruise with friends on a little ship called the Disney Magic – you may have read about that trip. If not, and you want to, here is a handy dandy link for you.

Bad Mothers and Others

Welcome back! That is, of course, assuming you came back. There’s always the chance you read that trip report and decided not to. Our good friend, Theresa, wrote that trip report. It was her penance for gatecrashing our holiday ;) There is no reason to believe that this trip report will be as entertaining or informative or have as many pretty pictures as hers. Actually, there is a very good chance that it might - because a) not content with gatecrashing just one of our holidays, Tony and Theresa have decided to join us on this cruise b) I am sincerely hoping that I can persuade Theresa to share the trip-reporting duties with me as it is an extraordinarily long cruise and c) I will, at least, be stealing some of Tony’s wonderful photos for my report.

So, now that I have completely lost my train of thought, back to the back story.

So, in 2011 we took that cruise on the Disney Magic and, of course, loved it so much we had to rebook on board. Having initially booked a placeholder cruise at the time, we ended up moving it to a Westbound Panama Canal cruise, due to depart in May 2013. DH has always wanted to see the Panama Canal. And I’m not normally one for letting him have his choice of holiday – but what better way to see it than smack bang in the middle of a 14 day cruise on the Disney Wonder? So the deal was done and the cruise was booked.

Unfortunately, in mid 2012, DH found out he was being made redundant. With final payment date for the cruise looming (repositioning cruises have to be paid in full a lot earlier than regular cruises), we had to make the decision whether or not to cancel the cruise, as we couldn’t guarantee that DH would have another job and we couldn’t risk using our savings to pay for the cruise when we might, justifiably, need that money to pay the mortgage a few months down the line. So, it was with heavy hearts that we decided the Panama Canal cruise was not to be. It all ended happily ever after and DH did get a job, we managed to switch to a Western Caribbean cruise, which we took with friends from the 2011 Eastern – so it was all good. While we were on the cruise in 2013, we obviously rebooked on board and, when the 2015 itineraries were released, we decided once again to go for it and switched to the Westbound Panama Canal cruise departing Miami on 1 May 2015.

All went well this time and, here we are, 93 days away from our cruise, paid in full, and waiting (im)patiently for the day to come.

So, back to the future – so to speak! And time to (re)introduce the rest of the gang.

Firstly, we have Theresa (LatteLover here on the DIS) - also known as Tee. Theresa will be celebrating a major Birthday milestone this year and so is taking this cruise in honour of being half a century! Theresa is kind, generous, sweet and amazingly tolerant, a personality trait that fares her well in her friendship with me. Tee has also been known to enjoy the odd drink or two - as evidenced in the picture below, taken at Manny's in 2011 - but it is rare for her to drink too much. In fact, in all the time I have known her, I have only seen Tee drunk once. She was hilarious though and I am very much hoping to see drunk Tee again on the cruise.

I had to look long and hard to find a picture of Tee drinking - and even then I couldn't find one of her drinking alone!

And, last but by no means least, we have Tony (tony64). Tony is a mega planner like me – we have probably driven Gary and Theresa to distraction over the last couple of months since they booked this cruise. Gary always jokes that it’s a good job Tony and I are not married to each other or we would be bankrupt with all the holidays we would have :rotfl2: Tony is a mean photographer and loves a good pina colada.

Bring me two pina coladas, I want one for each hand!

Our friendship with Tony and Theresa goes back quite a few years. We first met at a DIS meet in Chippenham in March 2006. Although Gary wasn’t at that meet (something about not wanting to meet a load of “internet freaks”), it wasn’t long before we had arranged another get-together and Gary got the opportunity to meet Tony and Theresa for himself.

Now, almost 9 years later, we have been to several more DIS meets, spent countless weekends together, celebrated Birthdays and weddings and even had a couple of holidays with them.

You’d think they would be sick of us by now ;)

Seriously, we always seem to have a good time together and to say that I was seriously excited when they booked this cruise would be an understatement. We are gonna have a blast!

So that’s how we met. Next up….planning, planning and yet more planning!

Great start Joh.....now I've been thinking........:thumbsup2

Yes, I am definitely intending to do a Trip report, it's a great way to look back on the holiday - plus, there just aren't enough Panama Canal trippies around.

haha Sally, I won't be signing any waivers - we will most definitely leave it all on the ship, it's going to be so much fun.

Checking in. I am looking forward to reading all about your trip.

Corinna

Hey Corinna, thanks for reading along. I can't promise I will be as quick to finish mine as you were with yours - I do like to drag it out ;)

Following along, hope you have a lovely time on the cruise, I'm sure it'll be absolutely beautiful.

I must say it really brought a smile to my face to see another of your trip reports on here, yours were one of the first ones I read when I first joined the boards last year - I found them so enjoyable and helpful so thank you for that! :goodvibes

Have you had any further trips to WDW (since the one with your daughter) that you'll be doing a TR for?

Anyway hope your planning goes wonderfully! I look forward to reading more :wave2:

Don't forget to make your TR really good so I can convince Mike to do the 2017 one.

There is plenty of time. I am normally only in a rush with mine as I have an agreement with Graham that I can't go on holiday again until I have finished the last trip report.

Aww, thank you, that's really sweet of you. I did have a trip to New York in June and another to WDW in October that I keep meaning to do trippies for but haven't got round to it. Since I didn't take any notes, I suspect they would be pretty boring now - and devoid of much detail. But I may get round to it, if only to filly my days until the cruise.

Don't forget to make your TR really good so I can convince Mike to do the 2017 one.

OK, I'll do my best Claire ;)
Cant wait to hear all about it, you do a great tr:cool1:

Hoping to post an update this week, thanks for reading :)
Im in, looking forward to it:cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

Hey Sue - thanks for joining in :thumbsup2

It’s good to have a plan!

So, when we left off Tony and Theresa had just booked the cruise. We had previously talked about the possibility of them joining us but, since Gary and I booked when the cruise itineraries were first released, the price had gone up and up so it seemed unlikely that they would be able to swing it.

Tony and Theresa went to WDW in November and when they returned, I sent Tony the usual ‘welcome home’ message on Facebook and, in return, I got a message which read:

:) is all I can say!!!!!!!

I immediately picked up the phone and called Tony who revealed that they had, indeed, booked the Panama Canal cruise while on board the Dream. We were so excited.

Planning began almost immediately. Gary and I had already booked our flights with VA back in July, flying into Miami and back from LAX, as we plan to spend a couple of days at Disneyland after the cruise. Tony managed to book their flights in to Miami with VA and returning from San Diego (via Minneapolis) with Delta. They will be flying straight home after the cruise as they need to preserve their annual leave for their second holiday of the year, in October. Luckily, their outbound flight is the same as ours, which we are all happy about as, for our previous holiday in 2011, they arrived in Orlando before us and so we weren’t all together for the day-before excitement and build up. It will be nice to start the trip together this time.

So, with cruise and flights booked, we were keen to turn our attention to planning our overnight stay in Miami and our shore excursions. But first we had a wedding to contend with. My best friend, Natalie, got married in between Christmas and the New Year and so the time we would have spent planning was spent celebrating the wedding instead. It was a lovely day though so I’ll forgive her for getting in the way of our plans ;)

We did manage to sneak a bit of scheming in, though and arranged a date to get together and discuss our options for shore excursions. So, a couple of weeks ago, we had a lovely lunch in a local pub and then spent a few hours back at our place to plan our Port Adventures and other stuff. The booking window for Silver castaway members (which we all are) was Saturday (why is it never a week day when I would be up at 5 am anyway!) and we were very excited to be able to book excursions, complete online check-in and get our Port Arrival Time (PAT).

We are mainly doing different things in port which, as Tony says, will be good as we will have more to talk about in the evening (yeah, because I often struggle to find something to talk about Tone ;) ).

Our cruise itinerary looks like this:

Friday 1st May – Depart Miami
Saturday 2nd May – At sea
Sunday 3rd May – Cozumel, Mx
Monday 4th May – At sea
Tuesday 5th May – At sea
Wednesday 6th May – Cartagena, Co
Thursday 7th May – Panama Canal
Friday 8th May – At sea
Saturday 9th May – At sea
Sunday 10th May – At sea
Monday 11th May – At sea
Tuesday 12th May – Puerto Vallarta, Mx
Wednesday 13th May – Cabo San Lucas, Mx
Thursday 14th May – At sea
Friday 15th May – San Diego

And our Port Adventures look like this:

Cozumel – Tony & Theresa are going to visit the Tulum ruins, while Gary and I are heading to the Secret River. Both of our excursions depart at 6.45am – ouch!

Cartagena – We are all doing a tour which will take us around the city of Cartagena, to La Popa Monastery, out to the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas and give us some time for shopping at Las Bovedas in the Old City. We considered many, many options for Cartagena but thought this would give us the opportunity to see a little bit of everything.

Panama Canal – We don’t actually dock at Panama but we will obviously spend the day watching the ship go through the various locks. It’s fair to say we are all very excited about this aspect of the cruise.

Puerto Vallarta – Again we are going our separate ways here. The Bucklands will be embarking on an exciting adventure through the jungle on horseback, to a 60-foot waterfall while we will be shunning the ship’s offerings in favour of taking a bus to the Malecon (Boardwalk) to explore.

Cabo San Lucas – There weren’t an awful lot of excursions that appealed to us here. Tony & Theresa have decided to take a tour to the local town of San Jose (I think mainly so Tony can sing “Do you know the way to San Jose” on the bus ride). Gary and I are still undecided between just exploring on our own again or doing a horse riding excursion, as I have always wanted to ride a horse along the beach.

As well as booking our Port Adventures, we also got a Port Arrival Time of 12-12.30 (which will hopefully give us some time to explore Miami Beach in the morning). Tony and Theresa have booked a Palo brunch and we will all dine at Palo on the night we pass through the Panama Canal (we will have to be up pretty early on Canal Day so we figured we’d like an early dinner that night). It seems that many people had the same idea as the only reservation we could get was 6pm.

We also booked our car hire for the Miami stop – a 7-seater for the bargain price of £38.60! Having seen that the price of the ‘Park, Sleep, Fly’ package had increased by a few quid since I last looked, we decided to book that yesterday too. We will be staying at the Premier Inn, Bath Road, Heathrow the night before the flight and have added their ‘meal deal’ package which gives us a 2-course dinner, drink and breakfast for a mere £22.99 each. Since we needed longer than the 15 days parking offered with the package, I was able to call Purple Parking and extend the booking for a further 3 days at a cost of £7.50 per day.

So, that’s pretty much all we can do as far as planning at the moment. Sorry if this update is a bit boring, I will try and do better next time ;)

Boring?????? As Tee would say "that was as exciting as a herd of giraffes"!!!! I loved it, all the excitement of the trip came flooding back. :)
Did I miss it? I can't see Typhoon Lagoon in there? :jester:
