(continued from previous post)
We took a moment to examine all the Vinylmation used in the display out front. Part of us really wished we could just approach a CM and say, "Since you no longer have trading here at the resort, can we trade for what's in there?" They have some nice ones in there! It's just sad because I liked the thrill of it. During our Christmas 2012 trip, we scored some good ones from Pop alone. I just think it's completely ridiculous that they're phasing out all the trading locations when they're coming out with new series.
By the way, I don't know how it is with the other resorts, but for Pop and AKL, it's rather interesting to notice that the fastest way to get from the bus stops to the inside of the resort is through the gift shop. The door is closer! I wonder if they did that on purpose, haha. Smart cookies if so. It gives Howard a chance to take pictures of some of the merchandise including their snow globes! I used to have a bunch of Precious Moments ones when I was a kid. I used to shake them and watch all the glitter or plastic hearts float down. I think it's hilarious that Howard seems to always see this particular one!
I have no clue who these characters are. I'm guessing they're from a Disney Junior show?
We figured since we were out and about that we'd pick up our post-dinner dinner from the food court. We knew that the food we split at Captain Cook's wasn't going to last us throughout the night since we had eaten it fairly early. Of course, Pop changed a lot of what they previously offered, so I was kind of disappointed. I absolutely loved the Beef 'n Bleu sandwich with the homemade chips on the side. Howard also enjoyed the chicken alfredo before as well. For our tastes, the menu was a lot more limited. I had considered the Turkey Sandwich ($9.19), which is Thanksgiving in a sandwich with the turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, cranberry mayonnaise, and watercress. How decadent is it to have carbs on carbs?! Unfortunately, it's served on these thick slabs of Texas toast, and neither of us were in the mood for that. I'm also a little bit cautious with things like that just in case because the added butter and grease can easily make my gallbladder-less digestive system rather sick.
We browsed the area for a bit when I saw the Cheez-Its. I thought it was funny because it reminded me of bosox2001's 3rd trip video when the dad asked his kids, "What is one snack or treat that you're gonna have in Disney?" and the little girl said, "Cheez-Its!"
I had also never seen these snack size Chips Ahoy packs before. I kind of liked them just because of the packaging! Since there's only two of us, it never makes sense to get a big thing of cookies because we don't always finish it.
Seeing as there weren't many options, we settled on the Southwest Burger for $9.99. It was an Angus burger with pepper jack cheese, black bean relish, guacamole, and jalapeno dressing. To avoid potential reflux issues, we asked for the jalapeno dressing on the side. We watched them put the burger together, and it's actually kind of interesting that it's really just assembling. I mean, sure, that's pretty much how you'd do it at any counter service or fast food restaurant, but there's something odd about seeing a hamburger patty being pulled out of a bin that's next to the other condiments.
When the plate was passed down to the last CM on the line, the girl scooped out some fries with a paper cup, weighed it on a scale, then poured it out on our plate. Hubs and I couldn't figure out if that's how it's done to ensure everyone gets the correct amount or if it was done more so for nutrition information purposes. Either way, I do appreciate it because there's a chubby little child inside me that gets nervous in these situations as I think about how sad it might be if the CM skimps on the fries. Yes, I take fries very seriously. We also didn't want any fry spillage or air contamination from the walk back to the room, so we also asked for a cover.
We used the remainder of Jennifer's gift card to pay for most of the cost. It was really such a treat having gift cards because it helped us feel less guilty about getting all this food. Realistically, we would have purchased it without the gift cards anyway, but it just makes the meals taste better, don't you think?
We walked back to the room with my following Howard's lead. It took me quite a few days to figure out where we were staying because sometimes we'd have to walk alongside the other rooms to avoid the rain, and on other occasions, we came from the bridge from AoA. I'm directionally challenged, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Basically, I could get us to the oversized Play Doh container, but after that, my rights were the same as my lefts, and I often had to look at the signs to figure out where 4140 was located. It's a good thing that when I drive, it's either to and from work, to and from my parents' house, or to and from the supermarkets/shopping area!
Once back in the room, we settled into some comfy clothes. Actually, I think we just took off our germy pants and sat on the extra bed because we hadn't packed "home clothes." Guess that's why our luggage had so much space! Does anyone else understand the importance of "home clothes"? I know most people will change into sweatpants or more comfortable attire after being out and about, but we don't do it just because of comfort. It's because clothes can be just plain germy! I'm especially skeeved when someone has taken public transportation because they've done studies on NYC buses and subways and found traces of fecal matter. I'm sorry, but that's disgusting and just not acceptable! It hasn't stopped me from sitting down when I have to take public transportation, but I have NEVER sat on one of our chairs or beds or even the carpet in my parents' house if I wasn't wearing home clothes! Hubs does it now too because he's used to it. It was a requirement when he came over to hang out during our dating days! Yup, he had to pack a bag with home clothes!
Of course, changing into home clothes wouldn't mean anything if you didn't wash your hands too! Only then do I start to feel comfortable. I guess it doesn't help that I have such a weak immune system. I know there's the group of people, scientists, presidents, and fathers who believes that the less you wash your hands and use Purell, the healthier you are as your body learns to fight off the bacteria and viruses that you come in contact with on a daily basis. I believe that's the case for some people like my younger brother. He has been rather healthy for the 16 years of his life without having the "don't-touch-that-there-are-germs-on-it" mantra ingrained in his head (and it's not for lack of trying!). I, on the other hand, will get sick if I don't constantly wash my hands. I remember one time I ate a piece of candy at school without washing my hands and thought, "This might not be the smartest idea, but I'm sure I'll be fine" and then I ended up getting the bad cold that was spreading among the kids. Even with my strict washing hands policy (Purell is only used when you don't have access to a sink!), I still would breathe the air filled with stomach virus germs in my classroom and get sick. Maybe being a teacher isn't the wisest choice with all the papers that get passed around and collected and the markers that are touched, but I still did my best. I had markers and pens that no one else was allowed to use, I used Clorox wipes on the door handles and light switches and desks, and I had personal space around my desk. Even so, I still get sick anyway like right now because it's time for my annual "first-cold-of-the-school-year"!
I "loved" it when a kid would be like, "I think I'm going to throw up; can I go to the nurse?" and then walk up to my desk standing in my personal space waiting for me to write out the pass. I'd have to mention it and say, "If you think you're going to throw up, why are you standing so close to me? Back up." Plus, you'd think that by the time they get to 6th-8th grade, they'd know not to stick their grubby hands in their noses, but that is NOT the case. Some of the 8th grade boys have picked their noses with reckless abandon. But kids will be kids even when they're in middle school. And I will still be me with my incessant hand washing and Purell!
Did I just write a whole story about how I'm a germaphobe? I'd apologize, but I'm not in the least bit sorry because Disney World is a germy place too! Go wash your hands!
So after removing our germy pants and thoroughly washing our hands (and I wash my wrists and farther up if I can too!), we settled on the bed and figured, "Hey, the food's hot; let's eat ... AGAIN!" What is it about Disney that makes eating every few hours so acceptable?
The Southwest Burger was actually very tasty and quite satisfying. My one issue with it was that the girl who put it together used the small ice cream scoop to put the black bean relish on one side of the burger and the guacamole on the other. It wasn't even spread out. We also completely forgot to get a knife, so I couldn't fix it so the toppings were even and we couldn't even cut it in half. I used a fry to indicate the halfway point as I started eating first not because we don't like biting from the same food item but because if I didn't put that fry there, I might have just sat there watching Harry Potter on ABC Family and devoured the whole thing without realizing it.
The guacamole was an excellent addition. I typically prefer my burgers with American cheese and ketchup despite my humongous love for things like guacamole and different types of cheese. I'm a burger simpleton. But this one totally worked. Of course, I can't comment on the burger as a whole since I didn't use the jalapeno sauce, but it just made me a happy girl. Howard did say that the dressing was rather spicy, so it was good that we asked for it on the side since the pepper jack cheese already gave the burger a little bit of a kick.
I also used a ton of ketchup for the fries. I haven't been using that much at home, which is a little sad since I have two big squeeze bottles in the pantry that need to be used soon, but the Disney ketchup was such a bright red that I couldn't help myself. Plus, I had pumped out enough to fill two of the little cups, and I wasn't about to let so much of the ketchup go to waste. The only gross thing about ketchup is when it gets on my fingers, which it did. I had to take a deep breath and wipe it off and be grateful that it was just the tiniest dot and not a whole dollop! As much as I love dipping sauces, I don't like getting the vinegar-based ones on my hands as I feel the smell stays there forever.
Oh, what a delightful meal to end the night! With my belly full with Disney food, I pulled out the Clorox wipes I brought along with us and wiped down every possible object that we might touch (I realize I did it at night and not earlier when I said so because we didn't have our luggage yet!). That includes the knobs, the handlebar, and the ledges where we put our shampoo and soap in the shower. Normally I also wipe down the edge of the shower curtain that you touch to open and close it. Then I wiped down the toilet seat and the flusher and the top of the toilet as well. The door knobs and the light switches were obvious ones. The sink counter top and the faucet handles also got a good wiping. Then I moved over to the nightstand, and attacked that with the wipe. I must have used 6-7 wipes because I think it's gross to use anything from the bathroom on other surfaces, so I'll start a new one. Don't worry; I'm not that wasteful at home. I just need as few germs as possible in the room! And considering I had a horrible cold the last time we stayed in a Pop room, I couldn't help but think if someone had been sick before we took over. Every little bit helps.
Howard as exhausted and actually fell asleep by the time I was done with my own shower and drying my hair. I thought it was cute how he was in the middle of the bed! Even when we have two beds, we still share one, so I took this picture and then had to wake him a bit to move him over. As you can see, we also bring our own pillowcases. I don't like the idea of smushing my face into something that other people could have drooled on.
Before I fell asleep, I snapped a picture of the pins I traded for that day. I decided to do that to keep track of what I had even though I know I only kept the Mickey nerd (yay for finally finding it!) and the Maelstrom FP pins. I ended up trading away the Russell one because I found it in color, which I much prefer.
Time to sleep! And FINALLY, day one is completed and we can get to a park!
