Cash tips vs. Tipping with your account

Who do you tip cash to and who do you tip through your room account?

The auto-gratuity that's added to your onboard account covers your room host, dining room server, assistant server, and head server.

You may tip (cash) to porters, room service, excursion guides/drivers.

Beverages purchased (alcoholic or otherwise) will have a 15% gratuity added.

We typically add additional cash to the voucher at the end of the cruise for our room host and servers.

The auto tips are left as is.

We distribute additional cash tips to anyone we feel deserves one - the bus driver who helped with our luggage, the porter who moved our luggage to the loading racks, bartenders who remembered our drink order and our names, room steward who even gave us a small gift for our anniversary, wait staff who we watched be taken advantage of/abused by a family (also told CM management staff what we observed, etc.

Although this isn't directly to the point of the thread, it is often pointed out how CM's really benefit from being mentioned by name in your comments.

Ultimately, it is what ever you prefer. You don't HAVE to do the auto gratuity. That is just done for your "convenience".

In addition,

You can charge tips for Palo, Remy, ( both brunch and dinner) Spa, and charge room service.

Who do you tip cash to and who do you tip through your room account?

We usually don't tip in cash except to our servers on the last night (that's how we give them extra). All others, including bar and room service, we use our account.

I'm PIF and sail in Nov, is it too late to add tips to my account?

Actually, no but you don't have to as they are actually automatically added to your onboard account at the end of the cruise. But, if you wanted to pay for them in advance you could certainly do that now. Just call up Disney or your TA and say you want to pre pay your tips. You pay now and your tips will be paid for already. You will still get the vouchers in your room to place in the envelopes to hand out the last night at dinner.

Only difference is your paying for them now, instead of at the end of the cruise.

I pre-paid my tips for my recent MED cruise and then I forgot I did. :lmao:
I have to say it was a great surprise when they were not on our onboard account because we had already paid! I was still able to add to them without any difficulty at all.
If you can pre-pay your tips I recommend it. One less thing to have to face later.

I do both. I leave the auto-gratuity tip as is and distribute cash on top of that (I think the CM appreciate that). I also use cash tips for room service.

I personally prefer to do things the old fashioned way. Envelopes. That's just me. That's what I am most comfortable with.

Does anyone know when the soonest is I can opt out of the auto-gratuities? Do I have to wait until I'm on the ship, or can I call and request to do it once I'm PIF?

Auto gratuity only means you automatically PAY for your tips (added to your onboard account unless you prepay before the cruise). Either way you still get the vouchers that you place in the envelopes to hand deliver to your room host and server, assistant server, head server. The envelopes did not disappear with auto-gratuity. The vouchers and envelopes are still delivered to your stateroom.

We do auto gratuity and then usually add extra cash in the envelopes when warranted (along with the prepaid voucher) to personally hand out.

We tip cash for room service also.

We bring a whole slew of $2 bills to give to room service. Everyone always seems to like the novelty of getting a $2 bill. We use them for tips at hotels too.

We have room service come to our room probably 4x per day, more if we're dining in our room since it comes in courses.

When we get out tip envelopes, I go to guest services and adjust the tips where we want them. They give me new slips to put into the envelopes. Perhaps we'll put in extra cash next time, but I think they'll get more out of us if the money is 'imaginary'.

Lol, as far as I go, I have a set tip amount in mind for everyone before I even board based on what's fair and all the research I've done for tip amounts. But if service is above and beyond, then I'll add EXTRA cash to their envelops.

So for me, it's all cash. No pre-pay. No auto-tip. Just sweet ol' green Wall Street money talks CASH. :thumbsup2

Yeah, just never personally been a fan of the auto-tipping thing. Don't know why but it just doesn't seem to agree with me. But like I said, I'm old school. pirate:

Cash is king in our house and our business operates in a cash industry, therefore we know what it's like to get the moolah instead of a slip. Granted it's the same thing. Anyway, we got off the Magic on Saturday and on the first sea day (the Sunday) we went to GS and took the auto-tips off our account. We had to sign a form that confirmed that. We then tipped everyone (host, head/main/assistant server) in cash and of course used cash for bars, room service etc Envelopes were still provided.
