second guessing gift card buying...

We are going in November with the free dining promo.... Can you put tips on a gift card/room charge? Thinking I might pre-pay my estimated tips for table service by getting a gift card if I can do it this way vs. carrying cash for tips. By doing it this way I would have more of the all-inclusive feeling I got when they 1st rolled out the dining plan and tips were included ::yes:: Then the only cash we would "need" would be for souveniers and extras as hotel, dining (tips included with gift card), & passes would be completely paid off by then.

Leave a credit card down on your room. Charge all of your tips back to the room, then before your credit card is charged, go pay off your room account with the gift cards. It is very easy.:)

Just make sure you clear everything the night before you check out. The day of will be too late.

The night before can be too late as well if you hit your resort limit earlier that day and the resort charges the balance to a credit card on file (just speaking from experience). I'd recommend doing it 2 days before check out. If you don't use up all of your gift cards at that point, you can still go back the next day to pay off anything you accumulate that day which should be a low enough balance that there won't be an automatic charge before midnight.

Didn't think of the limit. You are right.

I've thought about doing the gift card thing but found it hard to know how much to buy so as to avoid a leftover balance. I'd also hate to come up short and feel like I need to watch what I'm spending.

The Visa gift cards are a good idea so you don't have to worry about a leftover balance, but you do pay a fee for each of them at purchase $4-$5 per card I think. So you'd still want to save to buy less cards in larger denominations.

Why don't you just apply a reasonable amount to your room upfront instead of going to the desk every day? I mean, if you know you're going to spend at least $2k, why not just load the $2k to your room upfront instead of paying off $400/night for 5 nights (as an example). When we went to Disney last year, they let my brother tie a $250 gc to his room key at check-in.

I think if you UNDER-estimate it could work out well. I'm thinking of pre-purchasing to cover just tips at table services meals. We have 10 table services meals (there 10 nights during free dining) and estimating $30pp x4 = $120 per meal x 18% tip = $21.60 per meal x 10 meals. If I pre-buy $250.00 in gift cards then I know our tips are now paid for the duration of the trip. If I want to go any further, I can estimate I will not spend more than $200 on souveniers/extras - do I don't over-buy gift cards I would probably buy 1/2 of that on a gift card and pay on a credit card or cash after I run out of my pre-purchased gift cards.

I think if you are a frequent returner - go to WDW at least yearly, you can't go wrong with buying the gift cards because you will eventually use them. We don't get there as frequently but I still like everything to be paid for before we go so I know what our bottom line is. I wouldn't mind over-buying amounts a little bit, as I could still use them online shopping & Disney Store shopping for nieces & nephews.

Success doing this seems to vary. Some have been told they can not prepay on the charges (I suspect some CM do not know how to do it but that's just my guess). Can't hurt to ask of course. If they say no then just stop by every day or so

I don't know if they still do this, but if you have a disney store near your house, they'll combine all your gift cards onto one.

What a good idea! I will need to look into this!

We usually buy Disney giftcards in the months leading up to our trips. Usually $25 or $50 from the grocery store every two weeks or so. It is nice to go into the trip with a nice chunk of change to pay for food (we stay off-site, so no dining plan).

Reports are they no long combine gift cards.

This is my system for gift cards (which I use for meals/snacks and souvenirs):

- Buy at Kroger during 4x fuel points to save on gas. I also like getting them at Kroger because I can put the amount I want on it. For example, I can have four $250 cards instead of twenty $50 cards. They also sell this kind at Walgreen's.

- Only keep one or two on me and keep the others in the room safe.

- After each purchase, save the receipt as the balance is listed at the bottom. Toss the previous receipt with balance and wrap the new receipt around the gift card. Next purchase, do the same thing. I prefer this method vs. charging everything to the room and paying with the gift card later because 1) I'm not sure when I'm going to get around to the front desk (and there may be a line when I get there) and 2) I don't want to sit there and review charges to make sure they're correct.

If I happen to buy something that's more than what is left on the card, they just apply whatever is left on gift card #1 one first, then charge the balance on gift card #2.

I also keep around $20 cash on me just in case I happen to come across a kiosk that may not accept gift cards.

This is what we do as well. I wouldn't want to carry all of the giftcards with us.

I wanted to do that last year and was told by 2 different CM's that I couldn't. No big deal. I'll ask every time -- and when I get someone who can do it, I'll ask what info I need to pass on to the next CM that tells me it can't be done so that hopefully they can learn how to do it.

I don't try to buy enough gift cards to cover *everything*. They're just another savings tool for me (in addition to our Disney Visa rewards and a standard savings account) and offer a way to get a little bit of a discount if I buy discounted cards at BJ's. I usually cover about 25% of the cost with gift cards. If I don't use them all (which happened last time because I waited too long to go to the front desk the night before we left and my balance had already been charged to my credit card), I just save them for the next trip. They could also be used to buy Christmas or Birthday gifts from the Disney Store.

I am using the GC's from Target which only come in $50 denominations, which means that I almost always have to use multiple GC's per purchase. Unfortunately, I have had a couple of problems:

When I went online to purchase MVMCP tickets, I found out that only one source of payment can be used for online purchases. I sent an e-mail to tech support, who confirmed that it was true.

I then called to purchase the tickets, and was told that they can only accept two sources by phone, so we had to split the tickets up into individual purchases, which was annoying and also led to me having small amounts left on two cards.

I am planning both a DLR and WDW trip, so I tried to book a room only reservation at DLR and was told I could not do it with GC's because they have to have a credit card to refund back to, if I cancel. Since they can refund back to a GC, it made no sense, but whatever. When I protested that I was using GC's for the discount, I was told that I could have the front desk refund the first night to my credit card and re-charge the GC. Seems like a lot of effort that should be able to be accomplished prior to my arrival, instead of using my precious vacation time.

I asked the telephone rep (DLR) if I could make advance payments for my stay online, or over the phone, and was told no, I could not make any pre-payments prior to arrival. The only way for me to do it was at the front desk in person. Yet again, a waste of my vacation time, that will be exacerbated if I can't find a CM able to load my cards at one for me to "work-off" in the park. I am traveling alone with a small child who won't really appreciated having to stop by the front desk daily!

When I saw the Disney Vacation Account, I thought "This is the solution!" Alas, no. I was thinking I could enter all of my gift cards and then just use the account for all my purchases. ...Yeah... not so much. It seems VERY slanted towards those that purchase packages (room, tickets, etc). It doesn't work the same for us room reservation only people, which is annoying because it seems like package people already could pay-off in advance. It also seems to work better for WDW than DLR, which again makes no sense. One company.

On the brighter side, I was able to use DVA to purchase an additional night of MVMCP online -- it came up as a form of payment option, so that was VERY nice. However, it did not come up nor allow me to use it to purchase TTDP tickets. Perhaps because MVMCP is technically a ticket and TTDP is a pre-paid dining reservation? Perhaps over time, this may be fixed, but for the average visitor is it perplexing to be treated differently for online purchases.

Since I will be buying annual passes for DL in August, I loaded enough for one pass into DVA to test it,because it says right in the literature that you can buy tickets to both parks with it. However, it appears that you have to CALL to do so. I tested by loading an annual pass into my online cart, and sure enough, paying with DVA was not an option. Again, this may be something that the website will catch up with, but don't roll something out until it is fully operational and tested.

So, all in all, my experiences have been mixed. I am really counting on being able to load multiple cards onto my hotel account up front, which is not making me very comfortable. I am a person that wants to get all of the organizational stuff out of the way prior to arrival (like just about all of us on this board!). GC are legitimate tender and I feel like they need to be doing a better job letting me use them, regardless of how many of them I possess or what denomination.

I'm still going to be using them because I want the 5% discount -- with two trips, it is significant enough to me. But, I am now also curious how the whole process works at both parks (and have no problem pitching a fit, if I have issues!).

At Bjs, we have been purchasing $100 GCs for $94.99. There are also $50 and $150 denominations.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this but where I live we have an oppressive sales tax (near 9%). So using this BJ's example wouldn't I be losing $ buying a $94.99 gift card?

Oh, I did not realize this was hit or miss. I guess we just got lucky since the first person we asked was able to do it.

Hi-I am also from NY(long island) (tax is definitely insane!!) I don't belong to BJS, but often buy various gift cards at Costco & have never been taxed on the gift cards. I didn't think they could tax you on a gift card purchase-are there different rules in the city? If they do charge you tax then you're right it certainly would negate any savings you get by purchasing them there.

I think it depends on what they categorize the gift card as, i have paid tax on entertainment cards in nj (marvel heroes, warcraft, psn), but I don't think i've ever seen a disney gift card taxed.

We always split out our vacation money between gift cards and some cash. We try to have a couple hundred in cash (tipping and such) for my wife and I and the rest on Gift Cards. The only difference is that we buy Visa Gift Cards that can be used anywhere. We always seem to pick up one or two Disney Gift Cards but it is nice knowing that if we wind up with any leftover balance, we can use it anywhere we go or when we come home.

I completely agree - Visa gift cards are the way to go for me. What would happen if you suddenly had to cancel your trip (say, due to a family emergency) and were stuck with hundreds (or potentially thousands!) of dollars worth of Disney gift cards?

I went on a WDW trip in February, and my Dad was quite ill at the time. It gave me peace of mind not to have my money tied up in Visa gift cards, since I might have had to cancel my trip at the last minute.
