WL pool closures in Sept. My vacation VENT!

So it is with regret that I say this...but please remove me from any and all WDW trip logs...

We had all of our vacations approved through our jobs (two week process), saved the funds to go(countless months, year?), made the dining reservations early, booked and paid the airfare, bought the Memory Maker, took every survey ever thrown at us over the numerous phone calls made to WDW and IPO, made the BBB and PL reservations, planned out the entire trip, started ordering specialty shirts via Etsy.

And now... 3 months (give or take) before we leave, with everything in place, they are closing the pool!

First off, thank you Disney for deciding to update the pool, and doing so during one of the more extremely hot times of the year, (ya know, instead of waiting until January or February).

Thank you Disney for also offering free dining during our chosen vacation time because now, I cannot get a reservation pretty much anywhere close to what I had at WL.

Thank you Disney, most of all, because you've pushed me to going on the cruise I wanted to go on in the first place.

Booking all of these things so far in advance and now pretty much cancelling my vacation due to your construction, I've now lost out on some of the more important things that my daughter wanted to participate in.

And yes, I might be immature for cancelling my vacation over a pool closure, but I also might be realistic and have expectations, that when you are paying $$$$ per night for a vacation, and you are going on the "vacation of a lifetime", you are entitled to a hotel without walking through ongoing construction and closures.

The single silver lining to all of this I have yet to tell the 5 year old who wanted to go for her birthday that she was even going, because telling her now that she's not, would be awful.

If I remember correctly from when we were there, WL guests are allowed to use the Villa pool. That's not closed, too, is it? It might be more crowded due to the Lodge pool construction, but there is that option. When we stayed there (in July-August), there were so many things to do that we never made it into a swimming pool, although we did explore around them on foot and had a nice talk with a lifeguard when the WL pool was closed due to lightning in the area. That happened several times during our stay.

I would never cancel a trip I had planned due to one element being unavailable. There are so many, many choices.

I'm sorry that the pool renovation is scheduled during your trip. I agree that this should be scheduled in the winter months - when less people use the pool.

But as far as your dining reservations go - they are not linked to your resort reservation. If you decide to stay at a different resort - you can keep the same exact dining reservations. So free dining being offered does not affect you since you said you had made all your ADRs way in advance.

If you already cancelled your Disney trip - good luck on the cruise and enjoy!!!

Sorry about your disappointment, but I think all too often our expectations of Disney are so high that we are bound to be let down by even minor inconveniences. I'm shocked that the closing of the pool would lead you to cancel your entire vacation, but apparently it's that important to you and you certainly have the right to make decisions based on what's best for your family.

Sorry I have to side with OP on this one. It is totally unfair to announce this this late in the game they must have known for ages. In fact I contacted Disney a few days ago and asked and they said it would be open.

DH and I always go value at Disney. My daughters wanted something differant. I talked them out of the Poly because of the construction. Yes for three in their early 20s and a 12 year old a pool is important. They are paying for this trip on their own by the way.

Also at WL walking by the pool from the boats is a big part of the feel.

I feel that this needed to be announced before free dining was. DD and I were on the phone at 7am for over an hour to get this reseveation for a once in a life time trip for them.

I agree with you, that just stinks. You are paying for deluxe, it is the POOL in one of the hottest times per year. You are paying double what mods or value are paying, you should not have to walk extra to use a pool. I agree with you that they had to know that they would be closing the pool before now. I also read that they are closing the food court at ASMU and announced that just 2months before. Awful since they blocked ASMO and AOA LM rooms from FD, so there were only a few values available and now it's too late for people to switch. Not cool. Hope you enjoy your cruise!!!!

I also feel bad for the OP and anyone else booked at this time. Having two MK deluxe resorts (WL and Poly) under construction at the same time is crazy. And they should be letting people know way sooner. Heck, they make us schedule ADRs and Fastpasses well in advance... The planning ahead should be reciprocal.

We had the same thing happen when we were to stay at POFQ earlier this year. No indication whatsoever that there would be a pool closure. I first learned of the closure here on the boards. I searched high and low on the WDW website and found nothing.

I was upset too. I feel that the pools are major elements of the resorts not only for their entertainment value, but of for their aesthetics. We did go on the trip but sadly we never went to the pool. Even though they would have shuttled us over to POR, it just didn't work out with our schedule.

I completely agree with thinking this should have been announced prior to the Free Dining discount coming out. I spent so much time and energy the day the discount came out booking WL only to catch wind of the construction after the fact. I then looked to switch resorts (because the pool is important to us) and (surprise) the only resorts left were a whole lot more money. Ended up booking at the GF and I am hoping that a room only discount comes out as that would be a much better savings than the free dining.

OP, I hope you have a good time on your cruise. :)

The sad thing is, if I want to stay on property, which I do, there are not many options available due to the Free Dining promotion.

We wanted something better than a Value, most moderates are booked and other Deluxes are much more money than what we were getting at WL.

One was, the Cinderella's Royal Table, at the only available time I could get for that day. It's booked with the FD plan. If we switch resorts we would be going to POR where there is no FD promotion. The CM told me my CRT would go back to the public and I would have to re-book it.

Thanks to all those who feel the same way, I was worried about getting some back-lash! It was our first time trying WL, and my second, DH's first at Club Level.

It was heartbreaking enough not to get Poly due to construction, but I know I will leave WL with a bad taste in my mouth if we kept the reservation.

Yep I definitely agree with you. I don't do construction. I cannot believe all of the construction and refurbs going on around Disney! The Poly is, well, simply put, a hot mess. Boardwalk is being refurbed as we speak (and from the pictures I've seen, not for the better, but it's still better than the Contemporary's cheese wheel pillows refurb which ruined a beautiful room). Beach Club and the Villas are next this fall. Downtown Disney is laughable at this point. And now a Wilderness Lodge pool closure during the warmest months of the year? I've never seen anything like this at WDW. :rolleyes2

We were booked at Poly for months. Our vacay is in August. When they announced the volcano pool closing, we moved to GF. The Poly quiet pool is much smaller then the WL Villa pool, which is always open to all WL guests.

Sorry you felt you had to cancel your vacay rather then moving to another resort.

2 friends & I stayed at WL last month. We were disappointed to see that the pond in the lobby and the waterfall outside was closed. We had a courtyard view but our view was of the waterfall area under construction. We still had a great time.

Most likely they will offer WL guests another feature pool to go to. Poly guests are getting free Blizzard Beach tickets.

Poly guests aren't getting offered another feature pool at all. Only a 1 day ticket to BB.
So I wouldn't count on WL being offered a different resort feature pool. Poly was first offered GF feature pool, then they took it back and offered only 1 BB day for our 14 day stay :confused3. So we switched resorts. Poly quiet pool is tiny.
At least the WL villa pool is a decent size. Our last WL stay the main pool was closed for 3 days and used Villa pool. It wasn't bad at all.

I would be disappointed to in the lobby creek and waterfall dry. It's so pretty. We had an inner courtyard view too and loved the view of the waterfalls. A construction view would be a lot less magical.
Glad you didn't let this interfere with your enjoyment. Love the Lodge!

The quiet pool will be open and it just around the bend from the main pool.

Very true and I am sure my kids will use it however it will be very crowded. Also a big part of the deluxe pool is the slide. This is a big trip for my kids. They may not be able to stay deluxe again for years if ever. We have always taken them to values. So yes it is a big deal.

Are you able to switch to another resort or is your trip too close?

I agree it is a big deal. But look at it this way--at least Disney has told you ahead of time. A few years back they didn't bother to do that

About 4 years ago I booked a room at POR because of the pool slide. It was closed our whole trip, with no prior notice. When I went to speak to the manager, to ask why we didn't have any notice so that we could have made other plans, even switched to another resort, he told me that Disney didn't feel they had to give people advanced notice. :sad2: Needless to say, I was not amused.

At least now they seem to realize that people prefer to know ahead of time what is going on. Now you have a choice, and are not stuck with dealing with whatever they offer you once you are already at WDW.

I am sorry that this happened to you. We were, actually, booked at the Wilderness Lodge for September also. A few months ago, I was messing around with prices and found that the Cabins at Fort Wilderness were about $500 less expensive than WL. We have to have something with bunk beds because our kids (15 yo girl and 11 yo boy) will not share a bed. Not that I blame them. Anyway...I looked at AK, but if we were going to stay there then I wanted a Savannah view. Of course that added to the price. So I checked out the Cabins. We couldn't be more excited. We have our own space. Nobody on the adjoining walls. Much more quiet. They have so much to do at the Cabins and the kicker is....less expensive than WL. And they are included in the Free Dining offer. I think you have already canceled your trip and for that I am very sorry. Terrible disappointment for you. I just wanted to let you know about the Cabins.

But as of now WDW has not informed anyone of pool and real date closures. I was given four different answers. No one that I have read has received any valid notice. Everyone is reacting to info found from other diser's and then contacting WDW to get different answers. :confused3
