Doc in a box close to DLR?

We arrive Monday and I may be coming down with a sinus infection. We will be staying at HoJo with no car. Is there one in the area that is within walking distance if we needed one?

Not sure what Doc in a box is; however, you can usually get generics of common OTC medications from First Aid in the parks.

There currently is no good pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS within walking distance from HoJo, they are being built, but won't open until probably October or so.

You could take public transit (runs pretty much all day and night) down harbor to Target, Walgreens or the like though. Not a long bus ride, but I would think it would be too far to walk, especially if not feeling well.

ALso 7/11 has many OTCs if needed. If you are looking for an ER, my brother usually uses UC Irvine Medical Center (down Harbor to Chapman, east to just before the 5, south side...) when his boys need to be patched up down there. I usually book them into the Doubletree right there for that reason.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. I've decided not to waste DL time by going to a clinic if needed but rather just go ahead and see someone in our town. In fact I'm in the waiting room now. Better safe than sorry

BTW the term Doc in a Box is just another phrase for a walk in clinic. We really don't call them that here either but since other places do I just used that term so others who were familiar with it would know what I meant.

I was going to say try to take care of it before you go. That way you get the necessary Meds or OTCs to take along.

I've been fighting a nasty head-chest cold for about 4 weeks now, so I know how you probably feel.

You might want to do a search on the computer before you go to see if there is a quik clinic near the hotel.

Thanks for clarifying, I never heard the term used before. At least not around here in SoCal (maybe I never notice) I thought it was a FedEx or UPS store. Lol

Ah, if there is the need for a walk-in clinic (usually called Urgent Care here), First Aid can arrange for transportation to and from one for a fee.

But I cannot overemphasize how amazing the nurses in first aid are (there are usually at least 4 or 5 on duty at any given time in each park) and everyone that works in first aid at DLR is a registered nurse. I unfortunately have had the need to be in there on several occasions for various reasons. Many times, it's just to get ice cold filtered water and yes, they will let you fill water bottles/sippers there. But the point is I have seen the nurses deal with many things that I would have thought for sure would need to be handled by an emergency room. They are truly great at their job and getting you patched up and back to having fun with as little interruption to your vacation as will be safe for you.

Don't get me wrong EMTs will show up to the park in the event of an emergency and first aid will send you to a walk-in clinic or the emergency room when necessary, but if it's something the nurses can handle, they will.

I have even seen them handle minor head injuries that didn't need stitches and did not result in a concussion.

I have also seen circumstances where a doctor was in first aid overseeing a treatment that the nurses couldn't handle. I do not know the details of the situation, I just know it occurred and they even brought in the little girl's favorite characters while she was stuck in first aid.

My point here is whatever is necessary to keep you and those around you safe is what they will do. And 99% of the time it is something that simply requires a visit to first aid and you are back out having a good time on your vacation.

I honestly do not find the same to be true at Disney World, they usually only have one RN on duty at each park at any given time, so they are spread very thin and EMTs respond to any emergencies in the park. EMTs do a great job in an emergency, but many things are truly not emergencies and honestly RNs handle these and emergencies much better in my experience.

But going to your doctor before coming is definitely a good idea in a situation like this. I just want everyone to understand, first aid at Disneyland is not the same as first aid at Disney World. Disneyland's is much, much better, no they won't do routine medical care, but if you have a problem that occurs while in the park, they will take care of you. There are certain things they are not allowed to do, such as applying creams, such as their sunburn treatment (which is amazing by the way). They will give you the cream and a private space to apply it in, but either you or another member of your party must apply it, as they are not allowed, which I believe is due to legal restrictions. So, I would recommend going in with a second person if you think you will need something like this.

Also, it should be noted that while they are not allowed to do certain things, the nurses at DLR are allowed to do many more things than the ones at WDW. Even the nurses at WDW will tell you that first aid at DLR does more than at WDW if you ever get a chance to talk with them one on one.

Two shots and three prescribs later we are back home and should be good to go on Monday. ( I also have to sing two songs at church tomorrow so Disney was not the ONLY reason I needed to go ahead and see a doctor). And as fate would have it I saw a doctor who was as big a Disney fan as we are and understood completely. We live in Alabama so a trip to DLR is not as easy as WDW. In fact we had to cancel the trip we had planned in January because of ice and snow. But that two day trip evolved to a five day trip and we will celebrate our anniversary as well. 29 years tomorrow and still on the honeymoon!

DISNEYLAND here we come!

Thanks for starting this thread. I still would not mind knowing the best non-urgent care "doc in a box" nearby if anybody has any experience with that. Would be nice to have for reference.

That's good to know! We leave for our first DL trip next Saturday. It did cross my mind to ask if there's a drug store delivery that the DL resorts recommend the way WDW resorts recommend Turner. At least twice during WDW trips Turner saved the day. Once it was bar soap I ran out of & can't use anything else due to sensitive skin. The other was when hubby forgot to bring enough BP prescription meds. Yikes!

There's a company called Hotel Doctors of America the will do a "house call" to your room. We used them once when visiting DLR when we had a sick kid, but we didn't think it warranted an ER visit and didn't think of the "Doc in a Box" option. It was super convenient. They sent a pediatrician. She got an antibiotic shot, plus a prescription (no need for pharmacy visit.) I'm sure it was more expensive than an urgent care clinic, but it's an option when you don't have a car.
