Episode MMXIV: We Don't Say Goodbye, We Say Kwahirini

It was a (Han) solo trip that had been planned for
seven plus months. In that time frame, there were many ups and
downs that ended in the ultimate reward: a trip to Walt Disney World.
Four glorious days and nights spent in the Most Magical Place on Earth. My journey
takes us on a wild ride with marathon runners, princesses, and ruffians.
We will go back in time, take a trip to a galaxy far, far away and we will catch
a glimpse into the future. Please take small children by the hand and remain in your
ride vehicles until the ride comes to a full and complete stop. Thank you for joining me!

Introduction

Ohhh hi!!!! Welcome to my trip report!! I just got back last evening and I cannot wait to relive all the magic with you guys!

My name is Sue, which is the first time I'm revealing that here. Haha. It was never a huge secret... I just figured that it would be fun to do on my trip report. I'm very happily single, almost 42 and I live in Buffalo. This is my seventh trip to The World and my second solo trip.

Here I am with my best girl on my FIRST trip back in 1982:

Just a quick background for those who are new... if you were following my PTR (which can be found here) this is old news. Sorry. Hehe.

I decided the weekend of July 4th that I wanted to take a trip to WDW. I hadn't been there since 2009, so I figured it was time to go again!

I like going in February when it's cooler and less crowded, so I picked the last week. Stay tuned to see if those predictions were accurate! I arranged with my good friend to see if he could babysit my cat (my only child... ha) and he said yes, so I was good to go!

A month later, I wound up in the hospital with double vision and I was diagnosed with MS. My neurologist assured me I could still take my trip and at that point, that was ALL I cared about!!! I've never needed a Disney vacation so badly in my life!

I packed a lot of plans into a short trip. (I was there February 23rd - February 27th). Did I get to do everything? Definitely not. Did I have one really stupid fail that I never ONCE considered in my seventh months of planning? Oh yeah! Do I regret any of it? Absolutely not!!!!

Did I get to ride Star Tours or was it down on my HS day?
Did I make it to the Braves spring training game?
Did I get upgraded to the Cinderella suite? (spoiler alert: No! LOL.)
Did I enjoy dinner at the Beast's castle?
Did I actually get in any of the pictures with the characters?
Did I take the animation class?
Did I get to do any pin trading?
Did I like the new Little Mermaid ride?
Did I finally make it onto Toy Story Midway Mania?
Did I stay for Wishes?
Did I have any MS symptoms while there? (spoiler alert: No! YAY!!!)
How much did I walk?
How much did I eat?

All of this and more will be answered, so stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for joining me while I relive the best four days of my life!!!! pixiedust:

Day One, Part One

Sunday, February 23rd
I cannot believe the day is finally here (and at this point, that it's actually all over!) I had been planning for over SEVEN months! And everyone thought I was crazy.

But it was finally time to grab my Magic Band, my carry-on bag, and my suitcase and head out the door!! I had planned on driving to the airport and leaving my car, but a friend offered to drop me off and a different one offered to pick me up so I was done driving for five whole days! This is huge, because I hate to drive!

The weather this morning wasn't too bad. I had been stalking the weather report because I wasn't sure how to handle this. But it was about 20º, so I threw my winter coat in my suitcase and just wore a light hoodie and flip flops. The snow on the ground had all melted by now and I wouldn't really be outside for very long.

I checked my luggage and got through security in no time. I bought a magazine and a strawberry yogurt parfait and watched the clock stop moving

Finally I was on the plane! I was flying JetBlue, so I had my own little TV. Half the plane was watching the gold medal hockey round, and everyone cheered when Canada scored. Buffalo is practically in Canada and some folks have a love-hate relationship with Canadian hockey but I was happy to see that everyone was cheering for our northern neighbors. Because of the stray dog situation in Sochi, I had boycotted watching ALL of the Olympics. So I watched a couple episodes of Friends and then switched over to my IPod.

The flight was fairly easy... I hate flying, but this wasn't too bad all things considered. The Daytona 500 was scheduled for today and it wound up being postponed until very late at night. As we flew over it, our pilot pointed out why... it was very rainy and apparently windy too because the plane started dancing. Yuck.

Finally I was on safely the ground. As soon as I got off the plane, the heat hit me in the face. I live in Buffalo for a reason, people!! I was NOT in Florida to get away from the cold. But I wasn't going to worry about that. I headed directly for the Magical Express check-in! There were a LOT of people there. I didn't wait too terribly long and soon I was on a bus... and we were pulling out of the airport!

d6ada102-7289-4944-b250-f2c0582b173f_zpscd147149.jpg

I was sooo excited when we passed this billboard:

My sister and her family had visited The World last year and they all loved New Fantasyland. And of course, I've read so much about it on the Dis... seeing the billboard made the whole trip VERY real!!!

After what seemed like an eternity, we drove into Walt Disney World!!!!!
3db8a29e-a682-45f3-af8e-cee84671f2ff_zps4134bada.jpg

The bus stopped first at All-Star Sports, then All-Star Music, and finally we were pulling up to my new home: All-Star Movies!!!!

I had done the online check-in, so I was met by a lovely CM with an IPad who checked my ID and sent me to the counter. We reset my Magic Band pin since I wasn't sure what I had picked. My room wasn't ready yet, but I gave my phone number to get a text when it was all set. I got my welcome packet and snagged one of these guys:

I was definitely here to CELEBRATE!!!! pixiedust:

I headed out the door to a lovely Disney bus and I was in Epcot by 12:45pm!

Yay solo trip report! I kinda have a soft spot for those. :)

Haha, too funny (and incredibly sweet) about the hockey game on the plane. Of course a lot of Canadians cross the border to fly due to price, so a lot of those cheering could well have been Canadians. Canada was pretty much shut down for that. Please leave a message at the sound of the beep. Heck, they even extended legal drinking hours for the game.

Welcome back! I'm excited to see you started your TR. I must see which never done items you actually did. :)

Now that I know your name I'm still going to think of you as only khaleesi! ;) Seriously though, you are off to a good start although I'm shocked to see that they didn't upgrade you to the Dream Suite. What are they thinking?

I love going solo! I'm a "do what I want, when I want" kind of person. Not in a rude way, but I love being able to just do my own thing and this works out so well for me.

Buffalo is definitely half Canadian. We are closer to the Canadian border than just about anything and our next closest city is Toronto, so it's definitely possible! I can't imagine NOT cheering for Canada if the US isn't a possibility.

Thanks!!! Being able to do this report makes it a little easier to be back... at least I get to relive all of the wonderfulness!!!

"khaleesi" is just fine! I love the way it sounds :) As for the Dream Suite, I guess I hide my royalty a little too well. princess:

Day One, Part Two

The bus dropped me off at Epcot and I was jumping out of my skin with happiness! :goodvibes In some ways, I wish I could go to The World multiple times a year... or even once a year. In other ways, I think not going as often makes it so amazing because it's that much more special.

I have to say that I had fantastic luck with the busses for this trip. In fact, the Epcot bus was waiting for me (JUST for me... haha) at the resort and that was pretty much my experience the whole time. Either a bus was already waiting or it pulled up within seconds of me getting in line. So not a single, solitary complaint about the busses. And even if I had to wait, one of the huge benefits of a Disney trip for me is not having to drive. I hate it with a fiery passion, so the fact that I didn't have to do it for five days just makes it that much better. In fact, Disney has pretty much ruined all other vacation destinations for me because I would actually have to figure out transportation!

f6c60e45-5631-4948-bf1f-4e5fd4732bdf_zps8a3b3868.jpg

Anyway, I got through the bag check quickly and then it was the moment of truth. Would my Magic Band work at the gate?

Mickey turned THIS color so I was good to go!

I loooooved my Magic Band! I didn't have any problems and I love the convenience of it. My only minor complaint (and I when I say minor, I'm talking first-world-how-can-you-even-notice-something-so-stupid) is that because of the way it was packaged in the box, the Mickey head was never positioned on a convenient part of my wrist, so I kind of had to contort my arm to get it to work sometimes. Like I said. MINOR!

My first order of business was getting something to eat. I had the yogurt at the airport and a bag of animal crackers on the plane, and I was getting kind of hungry... and thirsty! So I headed straight for Sunshine Seasons, because I knew they had a great selection.

When I got there, a CM was out with a big old pin board. My sister had given me this set for Christmas and told me that I HAD to do some pin trading! My niece loves doing it and they wanted me to play along too.
baf15688-e858-4182-8c9f-f41be8d17225_zps61d4f3d0.jpg

The trouble was deciding which pins to leave at home and which ones to bring with me to actually trade away. Getting rid of Stitch would be easy, but ultimately, I wound up bringing Stitch, Goofy, Donald and Daisy with me. My very first trade was Stitch for a Tiana pin. Whether or not the Tiana was a "real" pin or not... who knows. :confused3 But it was fun!

Okay, time to actually EAT. I wound up getting a turkey and Monterey jack sandwich on focaccia bread, potato salad, an iced tea, and some strawberry shortcake.

The sandwich was really good... the potato part of the potato salad was good. I wasn't hugely fond of the other stuff in it, so I just kind of picked the potatoes out. The strawberry shortcake was AMAZING!!! I know someone on here recommended it, because I had it in my notes to try it, but I don't remember who it was. But I could very much go for some of that right now!!! YUMS!!

At some point while I was eating, I got a text to check with the front desk about my room. I was under the impression they would just text me the room number, so at this point I was convinced I was being upgraded to the Dream Suite. Hahahaha. It's okay to be delusional at Walt Disney World, right??? I briefly entertained the idea of heading back right away, especially since I was wearing jeans and it was HOT. But I had JUST arrived. I wasn't ready to leave yet, even if it was just to go to the resort!

Since I was right there, I headed to Living with the Land instead. I love this ride and I need to add the "Behind the Seeds" tour to my bucket list. I think I would really enjoy that.

I love reading the quotes on the wall:

I hopped in my boat, and I was on my way. I'm not a gardener, but I love flowers and homegrown fruits and veggies. And I like getting a nice dose of Vitamin N(ature). Relaxing little ride.

80324532-f707-46ac-bdbb-1c89ce00241f_zpsa03e1633.jpg

I debated going into the Circle of Life movie, but I had seen it before and didn't feel terribly compelled to watch it again... I decided to check out the standby wait for Soarin' and kept going. I had a FP+ later in the day, so I didn't see any reason to stand in a 70 minute line. It didn't feel crowded in the park, although there were LOTS of people, many of whom were proudly wearing their medals from the Princess Marathon. :cheer2:

I walked outside and snapped a couple pictures before heading on my merry way!

Up next: Quality time with the fishies!

You make a really good point. I would obviously LOVE to be able to go whenever I wanted and it would always be awesome, but I also wonder if it would take away a little of the "specialness".

Sunshine Seasons, OMG YUM!! And the Strawberry Shortcake... Nature's perfect food.

Day One, Part Three

{Before we visit my favorite fishies, I just have to comment on something. I usually spend the majority of my Dis time over here on the trip reports board. It's like night and day over here compared to the other boards. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just incredibly lucky, really easy to please... or completely delusional.

This trip was AMAZING. Going back and looking through my pictures and thinking about typing up this trip report makes me giddy. But then I read posts from people who were there the same time I was and I feel like we were in two completely different places.

I know there are a LOT of people who hate FP+ I understand a lot of the complaints, although I don't generally feel the same way. I'm sure it helps that I'm single and childless and hate roller coasters. But even aside from that... I'm reading about people who encountered nasty CMs, princesses who didn't look right, dirty parks and rooms, etc. Am I just overlooking all this stuff? I won't be posting princess pics for a while, but I thought the ones I met were spot-on perfect. The CMs I met were engaging and friendly and lovely.

It's all very weird to me. Oh well. Moving on!}

One other thing..... CONGRATULATIONS TO FROZEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sooo happy last night!! And I thought Adele Dazeem was absolutely amazing.

What's that?

Who's Adele Dazeem???

You mean you don't know???

Hahahahahhahaha. :rotfl:

That would be the completely butchered way John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel. I actually rewound it three times trying to figure out what the heck he was saying!

:lmao:

Okay, really this time. I'm ready to talk fishies!

d5551126-80bc-4336-b6f8-30798bfd2d2b_zps541a6723.jpg

I adore Finding Nemo. And I love this ride! I'm very impatiently waiting for the Dory movie. So after walking through the cool queue, I was in my clam-mobile in no time. I know people find it kind of simplistic, but I love it! And the jelly fish are wicked cool.

My favorite part is Dory's "just keep swimming" philosophy. It's become my personal mantra and when the ride was over and Nemo was back with Marlin, safe and sound, I snapped up a Dory pin for myself in the attached gift shop.

I wandered around a little bit, looking at the fishies. Then I decided it was time to do something I hadn't done before! Bucket list time!

DUUUUUUDE!!!!!

Turtle Talk with Crush.
How COOL is this attraction?! And why was this my first experience with it?? There were lots of little younglings hanging out on the floor and they ALL wanted to chat with Crush. Of course, when they were actually chosen they had no idea what to say. They all just kind of talked about food. I wish I had written down some of the funny things they said because the whole place was cracking up.

I was soooo impressed with this. Great big :thumbsup2 from me!!

After my fishie adventures, I decided to take a trip in the giant golf ball. I remember when Epcot first opened and, like everyone else, thinking that's what it was. I love standing underneath it and just looking at the geometry. I'm a math nerd. What can I say?

As I was standing in line, there was a woman who had on all her medals from the marathon and she was accompanied by another woman whose foot was in a boot. This awesome woman had on a shirt that said "0.0 I'm Good." LOVE it!

Everyone's favorite ride inside a geosphere was actually a trivia question on the Countdown to the Red Carpet show on E! yesterday!!!! "What Oscar winning actress narrates the Spaceship Earth ride at Walt Disney World?"

I KNOW!!! I KNOW!!!

I think Judi Dench is the bomb diggity. I love her voice, I love her accent, I love her grace.

(If you haven't seen Philomena, you should. It's a great movie and Judi plays the part wonderfully. Not an ounce of bitterness in a woman who has every right to be bitter. Very moving.)

After a quick trip through the past, it was time to plan my future.
4eebe16a-00e7-423c-8c7e-240cdc062339_zps00df857c.jpg

I have a very healthy future ahead of me, which apparently includes lunch dates with humanoid gumbies in orange jumpsuits. Hmmm.
79479dcc-d911-41fb-a26a-cd2b730f9078_zps02a8105a.jpg

Orange jumpsuit = prison. Yes? Not sounding so healthy! I'll stick with dining solo.

87c04e5b-037b-441d-9aa8-89264f49d93a_zps636416c4.jpg

I wandered into Innoventions to try my hand at designing a roller coaster, but it was pretty crowded. And I completely forgot that I had my handy dandy Disney Visa card with me... I was supposed to get my picture taken with characters but I completely forgot. And I wandered in to Club Cool but all the displays had people crowded around them. At this point, I did get a bit overwhelmed with actually BEING IN DISNEY WORLD!!!! Not in bad way... just kind of spinning in circles, trying to decide what to do.

Luckily, it was just about time for my Soarin' FP+ and I was soon sailing over orange groves and trying not to get hit in the head with golf balls. I'm fairly certain the skiing scene is there to cool me down, since it was REALLY hot and I was still wearing my jeans at this point.

After watching fireworks explode over Disneyland, I decided to see what was going on with my room upgrade ;)

Up next: avoiding Beverly and meeting my first character! I wonder who it will be??? :goodvibes

No Sue you're not delusional at all. I tend to stay away from the other boards for the reasons you identified. I firmly believe that everybody's opinion is valid and what anybody thinks can't be argued because it is their opinion and their's alone. And believe me, I totally understand other opinions. That said, it's been my experience that you as a guest have to be willing to "give in" to the magic. You need the proper mindset and you need to give yourself over to it all. It doesn't just happen. Again, no disrespect to anyone, but in "my opinion", you need to meet Disney half way, so to speak.

I like the Nemo ride too. But I STILL haven't done Turtle Talk. I will though, I will.

Off to a great start despite your future friend the convict. Hey, maybe you're just counselling ex-cons in the future.

I do frequent the other boards, but I don't post very much there and I avoid a lot of the threads regarding negative points of view. What's the point? I will form my own opinions on whether or not the magic is there or not, and when it's not there for me, I'll stop going!

I haven't been in Turtle Talk; it seems like it's meant for adults with children and I haven't been with a kid since I was a kid! Maybe I'll stop in and see it. Do I need to have seen Finding Nemo to appreciate it?

I love SE, and I think the narration is WONDERFUL. I will ride multiple times just for the nice air conditioning and the voice of Dame Dench!

I also hang out mostly around the TR boards because I agree with you. You're not delusional! I agree with everything Rob said, you have to be in the right mind set for it to work for you. I think that can be applied to life in general though -- there are always going to be people who see every situation as negative. I feel sad for them. Omg, I Travoltized my name. It didn't get messed up too bad, but some my friends were posting theirs and they were so funny. I love Nemo too, I mostly love the incredible aquariums in the building! Ahhhh I'm ashamed to admit I have yet to see Turtle Talk! Everyone talks about how cool it is, I need to get there. <3 Spaceship Earth! But oh dear... Future meals with humanoids in orange jumpsuits? Not very promising! Hope SE's precognitive powers are backwards! Lol Soarin' is the one that really hits me that I'm really in Epcot! <3 Sent from my iPad using DISBoards
