I'm assuming that if you signed up for Dine & Play, but wanted your kids to stay throughout the whole meal on say Animators Palate night, you could just tell them that they weren't doing the program that night?
You don't even need to sign up for Dine and Play -- you just choose whether to send your kids over to join the counselor when they come on.
And I have to add to this from our experience...the counselors do NOT come inside the restaurant. It is very much up to the parents to first let the server know that the child needs to eat quickly for dine&play, to get the child to decide quickly (and IMO it's important that the child stick to the child menu because if they order from the other menu it's going to slow things down), and then pay attention to the time so you can get the child out to the counselors.
It's not something the ship spoon-feeds to you at all; you have to take the lead in it. Which is different than the rest of the cruise, so it was surprising to me.
