How many pints to buy and renting points if you're "short"

So now the question is how many points to actually buy...

Historically, we go to wdw very other year at Christmas. I'm thinking nice we own dvc I'm going to want to increase the frequency, but I don't want to get carried away with a point purchase at we don't need.

So, given our situation, I was thinking if buying about 1/2 the points we would need for a visit and then either borrowing or banking to use 2 years worth of points for our trips.

If I want to upgrade to a larger unit one year or have a longer stay that requires more points, is it possible to "rent" points to make up the difference? If so how does that work?

Thanks!

For you to add points and still control the reservation, you'd have to get a transfer of points from another member. One thing to note, though, transferred points won't show up online, you'll have to call and make reservations through Member Services to use them. That could put you behind the eight ball if the Christmas reservation you're trying to make is particularly hard to get.

I would buy resale and look for a loaded contract. Renting points from someone to add to your total could work but there is a time issue if you
are looking to get a popular resort.
If you buy a loaded resale contract than you can buy smaller. Then wait until the addon bug gets you.

"Renting" points does not give you control over the points. You can't add them to your points to make the reservation. You'd have to get a transfer and can only transfer in (or out) once per UY. When you "rent" points, the member who owns the points makes a reservation in your name and you pay them. At no point do you own the reservation.

This touches on a question I had earlier. I rented points for a September 2014 stay. Just today my first DVC contract went to ROFR. So, if I become a DVC member before my September trip is there a way for me to "own" that reservation? I have rented points before and have to issues (DVC), but it makes me nuts not to be able to set up DME on my own.

Even if you become a member, you will never own the reservation. It continues to be the property of the person whose points were used to make the reservation. You might be able to set up your Magical Express, but you can't make your own requests (until you do online check in) or add the dining plan if you want it.

Thanks for the info! I expected as much, but hoped for the best. THe good news is that this should be the last time I have this problem as I can then transfer instead of rent if the need arises.
