Official 2014 Donald Half Marathon

:rotfl2: Well, somehow I once thought that the ToT and Donald were so far apart. How we are down to such few weeks? I mean...it seems like we just ran that race, right???

Yes, I'm fairly certainly it was only a moment ago. :)

Especially because the few blisters that looked like they had formed from the TOT subsided, and NOW have started peeling off. Which is bizarre. Or at least I think it's weird. I put arnica cream on my toes that night at the party, which I think helped them stop being blistery, but seems I harmed the skin after all. That heat won the battle of heat versus wicking socks and the bodyglide! So anyway, I'm only now dealing with the aftermath of the blisters from that night, so surely it was only last week.

Well cross training is a good idea, yes? So it must be a good thing! And... I don't think I took my miles above 11 prior to the phm last year and I did fine...so I would think even if you never get those miles up more than 10 you shouldn't die on race day.

That's good to know.

Speaking of the dropping temps... with how sunny it has been, hasn't it been crazy cold??? I ran yesterday and had to avoid icey patches. Add in that daylight hours are less... we all need to try and stay safe out there!!!

Since the kiddo has been sick we haven't really gone out. When I don't go out I avoid looking outside. So I hadn't really been aware of the cold until he got better and we ventured out, and wow what a surprise!

I have to tell you though... you are quite the inspiration. It seems like you never just quit.

I agree with Ann completely!!!!!

OMG! I thought it was just me that was just having the blisters from ToT heel. Almost all done... but still a bit of peeling going on. :rotfl: I know that is kinda gross..but hey, don't we all have peely feet at this point? At least I currently have all my toe nails. I can't always say that. ;)

This is a good thread for sharing! I almost didn't mention it because it's gross, but hey, I think most of us are dealing with our icky feet from the running. :). If you can't talk about peely toes amongst runners (or run/walkers like me), who can you talk about it with? :)

Glad to know I'm not the only delayed icky-feet person.

Hi everyone!

I only found out that there were Disney-races in August, and stumbled across this forum a few days ago, so I guess I'm a bit of a latecomer, but I've still got hope that I will make it to the race in time. :rolleyes1

I decided that it was time to start doing something "active" back in April, and had managed to go running a total of 21 times by the end of August (including the first two weeks, when motivation still beat laziness). Then I found out about the WDW marathon weekend - and that there would be MEDALS for everyone. Within a week I had signed up for the half marathon, since the 10k wouldn't have felt "worth" the 10-11 hours travel plus getting up in the middle of the night.

My journey from couch potato to Disney medal is going surprisingly well, even considering some cat-related injuries and my motivation hiding in some cupboard for a few weeks. I probably won't make it to 13 miles before the race though, so it's good to read, that dying is unlikely… :)

Thank you for the motivational thread so far - it has got me running today, even though the drizzle hasn't stopped once and I'm not exactly a fan of "weather". :rotfl:

I'll bite... Cat related injuries? There has to be a good story here.

I wish. Unfortunately, I tend to experience the kind of stories that make me want to hide and never tell a soul… Just imagine a combination of two teenage cats and one very clumsy owner.

1. Early September: Getting up way too early in the morning, I tripped on one of them, fell sideways into the metal corner bar (sorry, I couldn't find a proper translation…) of my bed and couldn't breathe properly for about a week, until the bruise on the ribcage hat subsided. (Backstory: I don't have a lamp beside my bed because of said cats' tendency to chase and chew on everything that moves - cables, lampshades etc. I had a battery-powered lamp for a while but they figured out how to turn it on, preferably between 2 and 3 am. Also, I have to put my glasses on a shelf that they can't reach, so even with light I couldn't see a thing before actually getting out of bed.)

2. Early October: I had two weeks off and ordered hay for my bunnies - three 40 pound packages. They were all standing in my hallway, next to the stairs. I tried to squeeze between the packages and the stairs when my cat decided to chase her brother through my legs and I rammed my foot into the corner of one of the steps. For good measure, I then repeated that a little later without involvement of the cats. I'm sure everyone will be surprised to hear that I couldn't wear tight shoes for over a week.

3. Last week I was cleaning a kitchen cupboard (into which I had spilled tomato sauce) when a cat jumped onto my back. I jumped, hit my head and spent the rest of the afternoon on the sofa trying not to move my head too much.

They're cute, but not quite the ideal cats for someone as clumsy as me.

Ouch

Benisa, have you ever seen How to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you? I'm a little worried about you. :)

Yes, and it is a worryingly accurate depiction of my daily life. :scared: Except for the dead animals - my cats are indoor cats, so nothing dead is brought to my bed. They do, however, bring me things I didn't know I owned. Sometimes I only find out weeks later what is is and where it belongs.

Definitely. And I'm a whimp. The worst part is the humiliation that is added to the physical pain when I have to go to the office and instead of pretending to be concerned, everyone just asks "Oh, what did you do this time? Seriously, how did you manage to survive that long?" :confused3

Well Benisa, I'm glad that you found running and that it's going so well for you. :)

At the Expo in January it's possible they'll be doing signups for the Disneyland Half (held over Labor Day). I don't know where you live, but that might be fun for you.

*******************
Managed to do 7 miles yesterday before I ran out of time (no one wants me to be running after dark). Not as much as I intended, but my Garmin recorded me at a 5K and 10K personal best. My last mile was faster than my first. So that was nice. :goodvibes

I went back and forth on the issue while training for the TOT, and decided against it, but I think I'm going to have to get a hydration backpack. I've tried on Nathans and others, but I think I have to go for the Marathoner. Thought I'd worked out this issue, but alas I haven't! Still learning.

I live in Germany, which makes travelling to WDW or DL quite an expensive vacation... :(

I haven't decided yet if I really want to try the Coast to Coast; Halloween at WDW sounds quite tempting too. But I've still got some time to make up my mind and the do something completely different once I'm at the Expo. :rolleyes1

Oh yes. 1) ASICS changed their design so much my inserts were no longer working with the shoes. Since my feet fit my inserts, my LRS found shoes that fit the inserts 2) very VERY tight hip muscles so my PT-chiro has been using ART 3) PT had me switch to forefoot running 4) PT has me doing strengthening exercises to correct the muscle imbalances
:thumbsup2 You've totally got ITBS ready to be beat! What is it with stupid Asics?! I used to love them and then they went and changed things. I can't go near their shoes anymore.

I am so sorry that you are in pain again. :sad2: I have to tell you though... you are quite the inspiration. It seems like you never just quit. I would think that a lot of people out there would have by now. And the fact you have to on occasion take it slower also inspires me. I mean it makes me push on and accept that I may not get my best time when I am sick. As for pics... I know there are a lot of people who do the disney races just for the pics and have a great time doing so. I personally am not one... but if I had to do it... I would totally rock it! Just have fun!! No matter what way you do it.
I agree with Ann completely!!!!!

You guys are very sweet - thank you! :goodvibes I really don't know what's going to happen now - I couldn't make it more than 2 miles this weekend and, unlike how things went with ITBS, walking is a problem, as well as running. I'm going to the doc tomorrow and will have to decide after that whether to forge ahead undertrained or DNS Donald. :worried:

I probably won't make it to 13 miles before the race though, so it's good to read, that dying is unlikely… :)
:rotfl: Certainly less likely than living with your cats, right?! ;) (Said from a fellow cat lover)

At least they love you. My mom almost fell down the stairs because our completely black cat was sleeping on an evergreen carpet, and she was walking down the hallway with no lights on. I'm sure he didn't like being woken up that way.

5 miles this weekend. I was on the treadmill but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My knee held up too.

Hi everyone!

Under 7 weeks to go now! :goodvibes

Just wondered what you are all planning as your longest training run before the race?

I'm following the Jeff Galloway 'experienced' runner plan (decided to do this one as I regularly go to the gym, and now run outside too) - and the longest run is in a few weeks at 18 miles! Does that seem too far? :confused3 My longest so far has been 14.7 miles, last weekend... I enjoyed it, and know I could run further.. but don't want to increase my chance of injury before January!

Hope everyone is enjoying their training :goodvibes

Ah yes, that distance and cost makes it challenging!

Maybe at some point once you are really conditioned and could do two long events inside of a week or so, you could do the Marathon weekend at WDW and then the Tinkerbell weekend at DLR? IN 2014 they are just a week apart. It does involve flying across the country, but at least you could do it with just the one international flight. :)

Since you are following the time improvement plan for experienced runners, I suppose Galloway knows what he's doing!

I'm following the "finish in the upright position" plan for experienced runners, and we max out at 14.

If you aren't interested in improving your time, you could always switch down, I imagine.

Hey everybody! :wave2: Can you believe life is JUST starting to calm down after the Wine and Dine??? :scared: Happy to say that even though I missed my goal of 2:15, I did finish with a semi-respectable time of 2:26 (2:21 total running time. I stopped my GPS for a bathroom break and Pluto pic.) It was by far a million times better that last year's race. I truly believe alot of it had to with not overtraining, doing more to prevent that darn old ITBS from becoming too much of a problem :scared:, and knowing what to expect. I hate to say I'm not nearly as excited for the Donald, but I guess I just need to get my head back on track and start really looking at the course and keeping up with things here. It seems like there are more people doing either the full, Goofy, or Dopey than just the Donald. Or is it just me??? :confused3

The DH said he's actually going to get up with me and go to the start. :faint: I'm thinking about doing the Platinum ChEAR package for him. Has anyone gotten it in the past? Do you think it's worth it?

Have they released the official course map yet or have they confirmed if it's the same route as last year? I did the full last year, but I'm running the half this year with DW and two first-timers. I'm meeting with the first-timers this Saturday to discuss Marathon Weekend plans so I'd love to have a course map if it's available. I haven't seen it yet though.

It's the same as last year based on the revisions on the full course. Saying this the opposite way, the start and finish lines on the full remained the same as has the trip through MK (only a slight change of course in DAK). So based on this the course has not been revised.

This is a course map in MMR with water stations added.

I love that map coach! So much better than the generic ones, especially if you look at it in the satellite view. You really don't spend much time in Epcot do you as compared to the full where you run all of World Showcase. That's disappointing, but it is what it is.

But then if one is pushing for a PR, then it seems like a little more than wanted while in the park :)
