I have seen numerous posts on this board about Fish Extenders. I have a friend on another board who made one for her Disney Cruise in May. I just don't fully understand what it is and how it works. Can someone help?

And what if I would LOVE to get involved for my cruise and I can't sew a button! How would I make one of those without a needle, thread or sewing machine?:rolleyes1

Thanks for any help you can give me! ;)

So just what exactly is a “fish” and just why does it need “extending”? Well… The “fish” is a combination wall decoration/ornament and message clip that is attached to the wall outside every cabin on the Magic & Wonder. The CMs (that’s “Cast Members” for the newbies) use them to leave messages, official forms or invitations for the occupants of the cabin as needed. It’s kind of like a glorified fridge-magnet and it looks like this: (click on the image to enlarge)

A “Fish Extender” is any thing that you care to hang on the fish. Literally anything will qualify, but in general, they are usually some type pocket organizer similar to a shoe caddy or mail organizer. They can be as simple as a canvass bag or as complex as your imagination cares to stretch. Here are a couple from our last cruise: (click to enlarge)

We’re are not very good with a needle and thread, so we engineered ours out of a couple of small cotton bags, a Disney themed bandana and some chain from a light fixture and ended up with this variation on the idea: (click to enlarge)

So, what’s it for? Well… It’s become a kind of “Secret Santa” game played by the folks who roam the DIS Boards. The idea is that every DIS Member who is on the same cruise will go around the ship and leave a little “nick-nack” or “whats-it” in the pouches for the other members that are playing along. The generally agreed rules are that you give out gifts to each participant once per cruise, and that the gifts should be very inexpensive trinkets that either fit a cruise or holiday theme and/or show off a little taste of who you are or the place that you call home. Here’s a link to a continuing thread on the boards that discusses the subject at length:

Excellent explanation!

You would go to the Cruise Meet section of the boards and locate the thread for your cruise. Go there and meet other dis-ers who will be sailing with you. See if they are planning FEs, and if there is interest in starting one if they are not.

It's fun to come back to your room and find goodies.....

Yes, the fe sign ups usually close up to a month before the cruise because many people need to make or purchase their gifts. If groups are closed you can usually try and organise with other late comers to form your own last minute group. Hope this helps.

Britney,

You're right - that forum is closed - that is usually what happens around 250 pages of posts. I tried to find a Part 2 for you, but I can't locate it.

My suggestion:

You need 10 posts to be able to send or receive a PM (Private Message)
In this thread, just make 9 short posts - they can contain one word each; just put a character in the text (Like hi, help, I, am, trying, to, get, 9, posts)

Then go to the thread for your cruise, click on a name of someone who has posted recently (or often), and send them a PM - try philatiger - by clicking on the name to the left of the post. from there, it will give you the option to send a Private Message.

Ask them if they can get you to the right place for the Fish Extender and the 2nd thread of posts for your cruise.

Good Luck and Bon Voyage!

Help I am so confused on to get in on the FE group for our cruise. And this whole DIS is making me crazy! I am just trying to find out how we can participate.

Here's a great thread that was just posted recently about Fish Extenders.

After you read it, you need to go to your Cruise Meet thread in order to sign up to participate. Of course, this depends if your cruise has a meet thread going, and if they are doing Fish Extenders.

Here's your Cruise Meet thread:

We are planning our first ever cruise in June and while I like the idea of the FE I'm not sure if we'll be able to enjoy doing that along with all of the things on the cruise we'll be choosing from.

If we don't participate, will we regret it? Should we still plan a meet with other cruisers or only if you do FE?

Sorry, just nervous/excited/confused. :)

You don't need to participate in FEs to go the meeting(s) that you group may have. We've done both, sometime we did the FE, sometimes not. But we always went to the group meetups.

My first cruise on DCL was to Alaska. I read the Dis boards so I would know some things ahead of time. I read about the FEs and I wasn't sure I wanted to do it. I didn't join the FE exchange, but I introduced myself and went to the meetup. I'm glad I did. I would see others from the group and was able to speak with them during the trip. I am going on my second Disney cruise, and I am joining the FE exchange. This group has been so welcoming no matter what you decide to do.

This isn't really where you go to look for FE/cruise meets.

You need to go to the Cruise Meet Board, and look up your specific ship/date. If there isn't a thread already set up that's where you would post to start the thread
