5) The new building will house a COMPLETELY new show and cast, but same sound system. *
6) Can anyone foresee a workman cutting something wrong and the system not working ?!?!?!?

Thanks for the info Rusty. A bit confused about your #7 though. Are they going cheap with the new sound system? Or did they manage to get by for 15 years with a cheap system?

I understood it as they are going to take a long time moving because they are moving the old sound system, not that they are moving because of the old sound system.

I gotcha, #1 is going to take so long because they are moving the old sound system-sorry I read #2 alone as the main reason they were moving was "because" (not in there) of the old sound system-duh.

* Amp which sit in one place, easy to move
* Controls, which sit in the control booth, easy to move
* Speakers, which must be mounted all around, easy to move
* Mics, which are portable
* Wiring, which cannot be moved and must be run new when they
re-mount the speakers.

All in all, assuming you tear down the old system at leisure,
When the new theater is ready and the power outlets are
installed, the system can be re-installed and tested in 1-3 days depending on how many people are in the crew.

(I've set up dozens of sound systems for similar sized theaters. Weekend
productions this size are set up in 4 hours flat with 2 people.)

I'd be surprised to see a new show. FotLK is a good fit for DAK and is still incredibly popular. I don't know why they'd seek to change it.

I agree with you here. There is no way that the sound system is the only thing making them move. Avatar land is the main reason for the move that back area is being cleaned out and the expansion will take place through there.

Totally agree with ParrotBill, I work in a casino and a 24hr turn around in our concert venue is common. Moving a sound system shouldn't take more than a few days at most.

As to the sound system, newer doesn't mean better. If the old system sounded good new it will still sound good, if it sounded bad when new it will still sound bad. I still have a 25 year old pair of Infinity reference speakers and an old tube amp that sound better than any of my newer modern speakers or digital amps.

I'll third those above.

I have been in several bands in the past and have had to move PA systems, sound systems, recording equipment, just about any kind of sound equipment you can imagine, plus have moved my at-home studio a couple times.

Now, none of this is as large scale as what Disney uses, but it doesn't exactly change a whole lot for a bigger system. Longer cords, more things to plug in, etc...but someone who knows the equipment, it shouldn't be all that hard.

1) Yes, they are moving the OLD system into the NEW structure.
2) I would think they would use the latest technology for the new building/show.
3) The current system was installed about 15-yrs ago
. . . it was meant only as a temporary measure in a temporary building
. . . even at the time it was installed, it was outdated
. . . and has had problems since installation
. . . many audience members remember sound drop-outs and feedback
4) Using the old system means 2-3 generations behind-the-times system.

1) A casino or band sound system is no where as complicated as a Disney show system
. . . try comparing the casino sound system with the Cirque "Love" sound system at Mirage
. . . the complexity differential is monstrous
2) There are HUNDREDS of channels per system.
3) Plus, there are many remote cues and alternate controllers.
4) It is not simply moving wires, if so, it would be relatively easy.
5) So, the move is holding up the new show opening by weeks due to complexity.

6) The show is being moved behind Tusker House to make way for Avatarland.
. . . this is the sole reason for the move
. . . the temporary building was enclosed and air conditioned lately
. . . this transformed the show into a quasi-permanent venue
7) The downtime between old show and new show is due to
. . . moving the light and sound systems to new building
. . . training all the new actors for the new show *
. . . training the technicians that support the new show

* The new location has a brand new show. The actors/CM's are going to
be all new ones. The current actors have the ability to audition for the
new roles, but NO preference will be given to them as the current actors.

I'm not surprised that they are auditioning all new talent for the show. I'm sure the current cast will have the advantage since they know exactly what portrayal is sought for each role. If somebody comes along that can do it better, then they should get the part. This isn't a seniority system.

I'm happy that Disney is moving this to a new theater and only hope that the seats are a bit more comfortable. I first saw FoLK in the non-enclosed theater and enjoyed it. Then we got a chance to see it for a special event at night in that same theater and found the lighting made the show much more dramatic. Obviously Disney recognized the advantages of enclosing the old venue and made changes. Lets give Disney a chance to show us just what they can do.

It closes on January 5th and may be down for 5-6 months. It's predicted to open in Summer 2014.
