Pre Trip: Part 1 - Introductions

Welcome to my first ever trip report! I have done dining reports in the past but enjoyed so many TRs on here that I wanted to do one of my own. Now, I knew there was no way that I could keep straight doing a trip report and a dining report (much respect to emmysmommy for being able to do that) so I decides to combine efforts and do a dining heavy trip report.

Wait, you are asking yourself, does that mean that there will be fun and humorous updates likely to include pictures of cute kids meeting princesses along with glorious pictures of food porn?

Yes, yes, that is exactly what it means.

We leave this coming Thursday, October 10th so who knows what we will actually do, but here are some highlights of what we have planned:
  • Pre-park opening breakfast ADR at each of the 4 parks
  • 10th anniversary dinner at Victoria & Albert
  • Food & Wine Festival booths and events - including a Mexican Tequila Lunch and a Mixology Series: Taste, Shake & Indulge Like the French
  • Traveling down with 6 princess dresses ... how many will we come back with?
  • My son's first trip to Walt Disney World!
  • Our first trip traveling with another family
  • Attempts to try things we haven't done in the past - including Tom Sawyer Island and Fantasmic! (I know, right?)
  • Dinner at the newly re-opened California Grill

Details:
  • Actually in Orlando from Friday October 11th to Friday October 12th
  • Staying off site using our time share (Silver Lakes)
  • 4-day park hopper passes (military salute passes) - though one of us will get an annual pass so that we can get a TIW card as given the size of our party, not being on the dining plan, and the fact we enjoy an adult beverage or two we did the math and realized this will save us money

I will be your narrator for this journey, so it is my job to tell it like it is, or was, or whatever. And now to introduce the members of our traveling party ...

First, this is myself (Phil) along with my DW (Judi) from a recent trip to Seattle we took (I know, I out-kicked my coverage):
iJ6hPJ2pIkhjE.jpg

This is my DD (Olivia - 4.5, going on 13) and DS (Peter - 21mo, though definitely already in the terrible twos).
This will be Olivia's 3rd trip to WDW and my sons first - well, second if you count the fact DW was pregnant with him last trip (I don't think he remembers much)

DD is also clearly a Frump in training:

Also coming with us is my FIL (Bob) and MIL (Kathy). Kathy has come with us the past few trips, but this is Bob's first trip with us and first trip there in many, many years:

And family friends Mike and Bridget along with their kids Tara and Owen will also be coming along - we won't be doing everything together but will have a number of meals together. While Bridget has been to The World before, it has been years and Mike, Tara, and Owen have never been. They kept the trip a secret from their kids and my kids didn't know they were coming .... so I expect there to be quite a bit of excitement and screaming when all is revealed.

I will probably have a couple of more planning posts before we leave. I will try to get a post or two done while on vacation, but no promises.

So, everyone on board? Sound like fun? Come'on ... I've got cookies! I mean, I don't know exactly how to get them to you or anything, but I do have them. Moving on ......

Congrats on being first! Thanks - we also feel the kids are fairly adorable ... makes it tough to stay mad at them at times

I understand dining heavy trip reports ;)

I'm in!

Welcome! Glad you are hear - I've read a bunch of your dining reviews/posts!

Joining in Phil!! See, I can call you Phil now, haha.

hi Rob! You can call me whatever you want - just glad you have joined!

I LOVE your trip report title, I'm in!

Welcome! Thanks - Robin Hood is my favorite Disney movie so I am sure I will mix in some other references ... actually, there is another quote in the middle of the intro ;)

Sounds like fun! I'm in!

Welcome! I hope it turns out to be a fun trip .... the elements are definitely there!

You had me at ooh-de-lally!!! I LOVE Robin Hood and get cranky when I think about never meeting him. And Prince John. I loooove Prince John.

Welcome! Thanks for joining and solid job finding the other quote from Robin Hood in the intro ... I'll try to sprinkle in some more throughout the TR

Pre Trip: Part 2 - ADRs

So in planning for meals for as many as 10 people (not everyone would join every meal) there was only going to be one way to do this ... that's right, spreadsheets.

We knew some of what we definitely wanted to do, but as we were staying off site and thus not on the dining plan we wanted to show some level of cost consciousness. We also wanted to balance doing new things but also including old favorites.

After some back-and-forth on what would work best, we settled on a plan. The one sticking point was that when our 180 window opened, California Grill was going through their refurb, wasn't accepting ADRs, and it wasn't entirely confirmed they would be open in time. So as a back-up we booked Artist Point ... but, then California Grill did open in time and I was able to score an ADR! Also, with having a Chase Disney Visa, I got in one day early to book Food & Wine Festival events!

So, below is the schedule of ADR's we have planned:

Friday, October 11th (arrivale day):
  • Dinner @ Kona (everyone) - new for us!
Saturday, October 12th:
  • Breakfast @ Akershus (everyone) - breakfast here is new for us!
  • Mexican Tequila Lunch (Me and FIL) - new for us!
  • Taste, Shake & Indulge Like the French (DW and MIL) - new for us!
Sunday, October 13th:
  • Dinner @ Victoria & Albert (Me and DW) - new for us!
Monday, October 14th:
  • Breakfast @ Hollywood & Vine (just my family)
  • Lunch @ Biergarten (just my family and we may cancel if decide to not do a TS lunch) - new for us!
Tuesday, October 15th:
  • Lunch @ Raglan Road (just my family)
  • Dinner @ California Grill
Wednesday, October 16th:
  • Breakfast @ Crystal Palace
Thursday, October 16th:
  • Breakfast @ Tusker House (just my family) - new for us!
  • Lunch @ Yak & Yeti (just my family and we may cancel if decide to not do a TS lunch) - new for us!
  • Wine Demo - Lasseter Family Wine

We'll see how things change while we are there, but all-in-all I am pretty happy with what I was able to secure - especially given that many of the meals are for a relatively large party.

I did the Akershus breakfast years ago...I honestly don't remember the food, but princesses were everywhere so I loved it. Really good choices :thumbsup2 I'm excited to hear about Victoria and Albert's...that one's on the bucket list for sure.

Following along! :)

Welcome Wiigirl! Thanks for following!

What a great lineup. I'm looking forward to hearing how they all went!
Thanks - I think it is a good mix of new things and old favorites and we love pre-park opening ADRs ... will definitely be commenting on all the meals

We have done the lunch there before and loved the princess interaction and found the food to be at least decent so we are excited to try breakfast there

Pre Trip: Part 3 - Costom T-shirts

One other "first" I wanted to do for this trip was to make some custom t-shirts. While I contemplated it, we ultimately decided against the whole group t-shirt scenario.

Rather, instead we produced a collection that at the very least we found very enjoyable and humorous

Mine:

Judi's:

Olivia's: (keep in mind she already has 6 princess dress to bring, so I think 2 will be enough) ... and big thanks to dismember Carable for the princess with lightsaber image!

DS:

We leave tomorrow - well, driving to PA tomorrow to pick up the in-laws and then flying down to Orlando super early Friday. We are all very excited though we need to step up the whole "packing effort"

LOVE the t-shirts! Especially the "Party like it's '71" one.

Have a great trip!
