The not so live version of dining w/ Disers, in Castles & on Safari! The Wrap! 2/26

Oh! We love Yak and Yeti!!! The fried green beans are fantastic!! If my DH could have his way, I'm sure he would want to go here more than once per trip!

Those dessert wontons are to. die. for! I tried them based on the many great reviews here on the Dis, but I was a little skeptical that they'd live up to the hype (I'm sometimes known to not be crazy about things that are legendary - case in point: bread pudding from 'Ohana:guilty::duck:) but they definitely delivered!!!:thumbsup2

Y & Y is one restaurant I really want to try. Egg rolls are the best! I love how you guys got smaller items too. So many times at a sit down you order soooo much food & then you're full for the rest of the day. Do you ever feel like the wait staff looks down upon you when you don't order a lot? Everything looks so good. I definitely want what you both ordered! (So much for ordering a little, huh?)

I can't wait to eat at Yak & Yeti in December. We've not been there since they opened in 2007 and am definitely getting one of those Pina Coladas.

It's been way too long then Kathy!! I hear the Yak Attack is a tasty cocktail as well. (think mango daiquiri)

I have never eaten here either, but with such wonderful reviews I have it on my most do, whenever we get to go back...lol

We've eaten here 3 times and it consistently keeps us coming back. It's still on the rotation next trip.

I haven't been to Y&Y for years...I think its time to put it back in rotation.

Jill in CO

I just hope to one day add V&A INTO my rotation like you!! :)

Just changed around some reservations to try out Yak & Yeti on our AK day! Can't wait to try it.

Love your reviews!!

Hi Margareton!! I hope you like it!! I'd feel bad if it disappointed you after switching things around!! Honestly, this wasn't a good representation of this place since we only ordered a couple sides but this is a wonderful option at AK!

Thank you for joining and reading!

Mmmm, Yak and Yeti. Great place!

That Pina Colada looks mighty tasty there. Perfect choice for a hot day.

Of course dessert was in your future! Because it's seriously incredible stuff.

I like the idea of just ordering sides for lunch. I'm going to have to do that in the future.

Hey Dani!! I absolutely agree!!

That cocktail is becoming my standard drink at that place. I should expand my horizons just a little!

Don't you know it! Those cream cheese wontons are so delish!

One day I'll come with more of an appetite and order an entrée but for now, I like the sides so it works for us.

I'd love to try Yak and Yeti! Those dessert wontons look amazing!!! I like how you think… a little snack and then the good stuff!

See... gotta leave room for dessert. You've seen my strategy. ;)

I am still bitter about my stone cold fruit wontons from Y&Y

Maybe I will give them another chance one day ;)

Oh Linda I remember that wonton fail! I'd hold a grudge too. First impressions are important and all. :)

Hi Brenda! Just wanted to check in and apologize for falling behind (unfortunately that isn't changing tonight). Those Yak & Yeti wontons look great. Haven't had that dish in several years, but I remember really enjoying it.

Hi Mr. DDW. No worries. Your focus is on the important things. I'm glad you stopped in to say hi. I'm looking forward to reading your live dining updates next month.

I meant to "sign in" earlier but I don't think I actually got to post yet! I have been reading along though. I want to become a more adventurous eater so I'm enjoying your descriptions of everything!

Hi Wendy!! No worries. I'm so glad that you are here and reading along and figuring out some new things to try. :goodvibes

Hi Tink!! I've seen those green beans on the menu but wasn't sure about how good they were. Are they served with a dipping sauce??

Aren't they? Oh soooo good! They are definitely a Dining Board favorite.

I will say that as much as I like the 'Ohana bread pudding, it doesn't compare to some other desserts such as Ger's Bread and Butter Pudding at RR. (or anther dessert that I have yet to share.) But I know what you mean.

There definitely is a strategy to ordering smaller sides so we can make room for dessert!! Honestly, the problem is that I want to eat at so many restaurants and if we eat three big meals a day I'd die so I tend to eat smaller meals and still order dessert. :thumbsup2

We've never had an issue with the wait staff holding out on us from a service perspective when we've ordered light or even split entrees.

DH and I had dinner at Y&Y on Sunday, 9/15. Just loved it! Seth was our server, too, in fact, I believe we sat at the very same table as you. We had the steak and shrimp with the wontons for dessert, I'd order the very same thing again, it was that good.

Brenda you know I love Yak and Yeti. We are here till Sunday, I may have to make a ADR to go back.

Hi Brenda! I made it over here too! :wave2:
Actually I came looking for you.
Harold wanted to know - best place for steak at Disney (aside from V&A). I knew you would know!

You have so many followers I thought I was so far behind! Turns out I had only missed one review so far! Y&Y is a place I enjoy the entrees more than anything else. The Honey Chicken was pretty good. Unfortunately I am one of the only ones who was not a huge fan of the Fried Wantons for Dessert. I am just strange I guess! :lmao:

I had to let you know that we are now trying TWO new restaurants in December due to your reviews. You already know about Whispering Canyon Cafe for breakfast; now we are doing Jiko for dinner. You best be giving me some ideas of what to order as I'm very fussy and don't like sauces, etc.

Hello there!! Sounds like we had pretty much the same experience! Glad that you enjoyed your meal! :thumbsup2 Love those wontons!

Hi Lori!! I hope you are enjoying your trip! Another round of those wontons may be in order! :)

Hi Alysa! Thanks for tracking me down.

Spoiler alert here... best steak hands down.... Shula's. Not even giving a second place it was that good. :thumbsup2 (ok, Monsieur Paul was pretty good as well.)

Ha ha Paula my little F&W friend! What? Not a fan of the wontons? Have you eeeeveeenn tried them?? Ok, I'll stop! And I won't call you strange. I've seen the honey chicken and that is definitely something that I would love to order.

Ohhh Jiko. Good choice! I don't like curry, paprika, or other strong spices but I really do like the filet which has a red wine sauce. And my favorite is the short ribs. For something like the filet you may be able to ask for any sauce on the side. The wait staff should take the time to listen to your preferences and make some suggestions. I hope you like it!! :)

Sunday August 18, 2013: Captain's Grille Dinner with a Dismeet!!!

DSC02760.jpg

We were meeting up with a Dis pal (DonaldDoleWhip) and his mom for dinner at Captains Grille at Yacht Club. Following dinner we had plans for an Illuminations cruise with Mr. DDW, his mom, Goofysonsmom (Vicki) and her son Andrew.

We met Mr. DDW last summer when our travel dates overlapped and I had the pleasure, no honor, of revealing the first known photo of Mr. DDW on the Disboards.

And because two photos are not enough...
DDW3.jpg

This year our travel dates aligned so I insisted that we get together. (Poor guy didnt have a chance!) Special thanks to Vicki for inviting us both to the Illuminations cruise! But first let's talk dinner.

Since I wanted to be close to the YC marina for our cruise I thought dinner at Captains Grille would be a good plan. Em and I had dinner here with friends in February so a repeat of dining with pals was in order.

We were seated without delay for our 6:45pm ADR. (Walk ups appear to always be accommodated when we are there.) Because I was pretty chatty after not seeing Mr. DDW for a year I can't say that I paid much attention to the menu. I believe by the 2nd time that our server came by I decided on the fly what to order.

Em ordered the roasted chicken breast while I decided to go with the market salad and another appetizer, the potato gnocchi. We were also presented with a basket of bread and butter which no one was apparently interested in since it went untouched. (I know some may be shocked to hear I didn't touch the bread! I don't even have a photo.)

Dinner arrived, cameras came out, and no one touched their food until we had sufficient photo evidence of our meal. Em and Mr. DDW's mom are both so well trained!

Starting with Em's chicken, she described it as your typical, nothing exciting, pan roasted chicken. It wasnt bad she emphasized its just not likely that anyone would place it in the highly esteemed category along side Jiko short-ribs or Tonga Toast. (I know, two totally different dishes on opposite ends of the dining spectrum.)

As for me, if I had given it more thought I probably would have paid more attention to the menu. However, I didnt so heres what I can tell you about the market salad and the potato gnocchi.

This was the second time I ordered the Market salad which really wasnt bad. What I really liked about it was the fresh apple slices and the champagne vinaigrette dressing. That embellishment on top is wafer thin crispy crouton.

For my entrée I chose another appetizer, the potato gnocchi. It intrigued me from the description. However, I think Im just not a gnocchi person. It was too mushy and some of the pieces were a tad over-browned taking on a distinctly well done flavor. With that criticism, there was a bright spot to the dish, I really liked the pears and walnuts& in fact, I believe I picked out every little pear chunk and walnut sliver on my plate.

House Made Potato-Cheese Gnocchi; with toasted walnuts, julienned pears, and truffle butter ($7.99):

No dessert for us since we had to catch a boat...hang on for more on that shortly.

So, would I dine here again? Yes. I believe that this is still a great option in the YC/BC resort complex. I am a big fan of their breakfast buffet so I'd likely book that before I rebook a dinner. Even if the food didn't wow, the highlight was dining with Mr. DDW and his sweet mother.

YAY! Fun Dismeets!
I've never been to Captain's Grille. It looks really nice inside.
Em's chicken certainly looks tasty, even if it was just typical. And your salad looks really good too. I'm not normally a gnocchi fan either, but I had some at Le Cellier last year that changed my mind. Or well, at least I liked that dish! :rotfl2: The combo of the pears and walnuts does sound yummy.

I have stayed at the Beach Club several times now and have yet to try Captains Grille. Good to know that walkups are generally accommodated and that breakfast is an especially good option. Filing that way for the upcoming trip!

Hurrah for DIS meets. Aren't they the best. So many terrific people in this community. :goodvibes

I've never tried Captains Grill. I was looking at it for lunch on my last trip but nothing on the menu jumped out at me so I gave it a pass.

Mr. DDW has on the same shirt as your last DISMeet! :rotfl2:

Oh.. and yes.. I have tried the Y&Y wontons.. buried somewhere in the live thread should be photographic evidence!

I eagerly wait for new updates and the second I finish reading one, Im scrolling down feverishly looking to see if "up next"means there's another post directly after! Lol love your dr/tr! Keep em coming! Btw- while I was out shopping I found a mickey head waffle maker and nearly bought it just to see if they would taste the same. In the end I decided against it...for now!

Just found your report.. Love reading about food. It is my favorite thing to plan for our trips. Since, we have two trips coming up I am hoping to try some of your suggestions. Also, look forward to reading more.

Ok confession time. I admit that I was a bit bummed when I found out you all were eating together but now that I see your review, I am happy we ate at Kouzzina as it was one of the best meals of our trip ( I will get there eventually on my review!).

So happy that we got to meet up with you all afterwards though!! :thumbsup2

Dinner arrived, cameras came out, and no one touched their food until we had sufficient photo evidence of our meal. Em and Mr. DDWs mom are both so well trained!

OMG!!! This comment made me realize for the first time what all of our DISmeet meals are going to be like in December.

Food arrives followed by at least 6 cameras/cell phones being pulled out and the picture taking frenzy begins...and that's just the first course!!! Oh, this is going to be funny, I can't wait to see the faces of our waitstaff. :lmao:

Love Yak & Yeti but I always got the kobe burger. I guess that will have to change soon. The egg rolls looked good.
Captain’s Grill is good and yes it is a walk up every time we go also.
Dinner with disfriends is always good.

The meal looks good. If we were in the area, I could see us stopping in there. :) I love gnocchi, but I know that it's not a texture/flavor everyone loves.
