Still haven't told dd #1 she isn't going with us!! I don't know when to tell her? I guess I will tell her after I move her to college! If I tell her now I will have to deal with it until she moves to her apartment on the 21st!

Disney Cruise Line to allow shorts in dining rooms

Disney Cruise Line has relaxed the dress code in their main dining rooms. Previously, guests were encouraged to dress in "Cruise Casual," which generally meant no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. The majority of guests used this opportunity to dress up a little for dinner, with dresses or nice pants for women and slacks for men. The new policy states that shorts, jeans, khakis and capris are permitted, but guests are still asked not to wear swimwear or tank tops.

Most Disney Cruise Line itineraries also feature themed nights where guests dress like pirates or in tropical attire. There is often a Formal Night as well. A stricter dress code will still apply for Palo and Remy, the adults-only restaurants on the ships.

That makes sense to me. I called this morning. They were mailed to my TA who hasn't seen them yet. DCL said I don't need them anyway. All I need is my cruise contract & ID & we will be fine. The porters will have luggage tags for us. So, all is good!

That makes sense to me. From what I've seen on the DCL dvd, the MDR's look equivalent to the dining places at WDW that don't require you to dress up so I'm not sure why some people think a DCL should be any different. I don't care what other people are wearing, I just want the food to be good, lol.

We don't like this change but will not let if affect us or how we dress for dinner.

We feel like the MDRs are equivalent to going to dinner at California Grill, Jiko, or Critricos which is a littler dressier than going to 1900 Park Fare or Chef Mickey's so we do like to dress up a little. When we say dress up we don't not mean cocktail dresses every - usually we are in sundresses or capris and tops with the guys wearing dockers and a collared shirt.

My biggest concern with this change is what will we see in the MDRs next? DCL does not police the dress code so you saw people wearing shorts when they weren't allowed so now will we see pjs and swimsuits? On our cruise in March a young adult girl sitting at the table next to us showed up to dinner on the last night with pj pants and a tank top. Not very fun to look at through dinner but we didn't let it bother us, it was just annoying.

This is correct. The only reason you would need the luggage tags is if you are flying into Orlando and using DCL transportation to the port and want them to handle your luggage. If you are driving to the port then the porters will have luggage tags for you. Just make sure you know your stateroom number. Also, make sure you do online check-in and print the Cruise Contract & CC authorization form and take them with you.

I think if Chef de France were located at one of the resorts, it would probably be a dressier affair (or at least I think it should be based on the decor).

The fact is that what other people wear does affect the ambiance, just like what the room looks like affects the ambiance. Imagine if Cinderalla had gone to the ball to find Prince charming and all his guests in shorts and flip flops! Lol. Not quite as romantic an affair I would venture to say.

With that said, I do think there is some potential that this rule change might (*might*) be a good thing. Perhaps, Disney has changed the rules so that it's easier for them to enforce the rules. If that's the case and if they actually enforce the rules after this rule change, than I think I can handle a few shorts on casual nights . They might also use this change to actually enforce no shorts on semi-formal and formal nights. I would very much approve if it worked out that way. I know, this is probably wishful thinking on my part, but I'm allowed to hope for the best. I guess we'll all see how this works out soon enough.

Very true. That might not be a bad idea, to enforce no shorts on semi-formal and formal nights. I know on the 3 day cruise they don't have formal nights but don't they have a semi-formal night? Regardless, I'm planning to wear either a dress or a skirt with a nice top for the dinners.

I totally agree that it changes the whole ambiance of the dinning room. It would be a good change if they use this to enforce some rules in the MDRs. People already wear jeans on semi-formal and formal night so it is really going to dumb down the evenings if they allow shorts on those nights. Just might have to start making reservations at Palo and/or Remy for those nights if I'm going to dress up but they are going to allow shorts in the MDRs. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens once this goes into affect.

I've see it several places on the internet including some reliable sources. I got an email from DCL but I think that was about the no smoking on the verandahs after Nov 15th. Let me see if I find where I read it.

The 3 and 4 night cruises do not have semi-formal or formal nights. Not sure about the 3 night but the only thing the 4-night has is "dress-up" night.

No dress code for the MDRs for breakfast.

Strangely I have not received the email from DCL yet and it doesn't appear I will. I have three cruised booked now and two are after 11/15.

I'm grateful for the change but it would be nice to get the official notification too - lol

Oops! I got mixed up and thought you guys were talking about the smoking change 11/15. Sorry!! I was online earlier and it still has no shorts allowed so I wonder when they will update that? I rarely wear shorts so this doesn't impact me but it will be nice to allow my DS to wear nice khaki shorts and a dress shirt a few times.

Thanks for linking the disboards announcement! It's good to actually read an officialish release rather than just depend on rumor.

On the four night there's an 'optional dress up' night but no formal nights.
