i know this topic has been covered in depth but still having trouble deciding which way to go for add on and DH can't take my talking about it anymore :rotfl2:

need to add on probably in the range of 100 to 150 points. very tempted to buy a resale contract as there is no question the prices are better. i am still considering buying direct though for the following reasons: i will need to use the points soon - within the next 8 months. also i would like to pay in full over financing and adding on through disney would allow me to do it in smaller increments over time without having to have a huge amount of cash available at once. on the other hand, buying from disney means a higher overall price.

i realize this is a personal decision but wondering if anyone weighed these same considerations and how you came down on the decision? thanks in advance!

For me resale prices won out.

In terms of financing, if you know, absolutely KNOW the term in which you will be able to pay the loan, and you have good credit, you can see if any of your credit cards are offering a balance transfer. If so, you can basically use your credit card to get an unsecured loan for part of the purchase price, for a financing fee, typically on the order of 3-6% of the loan. But if you do not get the loan paid off, they will hit you with all of the interest from the date you took the loan. So, like I said, you must KNOW that you will be able to pay it off within the term set.

Of course if you can be patient and save and pay cash, that works too. :). Me, I'm not so patient. Also prices are way, way up from when I bought last summer, so I am glad I bought when I did

I went resale also....

8 months is a big window. Sounds like you have time to watch the resale sites....

If you bought direct in small increments say 50 points at a time your gonna pay around$130-$150... $130 x50 = $6500

You can find resale contracts in the $70 range. Plenty of 100-150 point contracts out there $70 x 100 = $7000

Get on the mailing lists and check the websites frequently. I have been seeing a lot of smaller point contracts coming up lately at decent prices. You may find a contract or two that are exactly what you're looking for. If not and you start running out of time you can always fall back on buying direct...

I think it depends what resort you're looking for, UY, and what you might need in the future.

Timewise, buying a sold out resort will be about the same direct or resale.

Buying direct lets you buy the smaller 25 or 50pt contracts. Buying resale for small contracts tend to be more expensive, making the resale savings negligible.

How long were you planning to finance? I was planning to use the Slate card from Chase (suggested from another poster) with free balance transfer and 15 months no interest. Given the current resale market I might just wait it out.

I would look for a point transfer if you need those points soon. 8 months seems far away but if you look for a contract and go through the process that could take 2/3 months and then by the time you actually get the points you may have trouble with availability.

Of course, I agree with buying resale. Also agree with waiting to see if more resale contracts become available and the prices even out.

Unless you really have to have VGF points direct pricing is just too high for me to consider.

Good luck!

thanks for the input so far!

i was under the impression that you can't use a credit card? were you planning on using one of those promotional "checks" you get from the credit card company? if so will a reputable resale broker accept these?

Other than a deposit, I don't believe any of the resale brokers will take a CC for the purchase, unlike Disney, who will. If you have a Disney Visa, you can get 6 months at 0% interest.

When I bought through them, I put down my deposit in June, right after my statement closing date. I then asked them to delay the charge of the balance of my purchase until after my July statement closing date--that pretty much gave me 7 months to pay at 0% interest which was exactly what I wanted.

In terms of the time, direct may not be faster, depending on the resort and UY you need. There are waiting lists for some of the older resorts for certain UY's through Disney. Figure 3 months from start to finish with resale...the only drawback is if your get ROFR'd, the process starts again....

With the number of points you are looking for, I would check out resale, at least for a little bit, before going right for Disney. I also know that Disney does allow you to buy in with 50% down--which can be put on the Disney Visa--and finance for a year at a much lower rate--maybe 6% or so...

Since our original buy in 2009, we have gone the resale route for the most part--just because the savings and we too were looking to add between 100 to 150 points.

If I wanted something small--like 25 to 40 points--I would probably just go through Disney and pay the extra to have the points--of course, I would try to time it towards the end of my UY to maximize the points I was getting.

If you get the balance transfer checks, typically there is the option to write the check to yourself, to deposit & use the funds as you wish.
ETA: Call your credit card company to see if that is an option for you.

It's all in the numbers and how much you are willing to spend.

Buying direct will cost your more.

Financing and/or credit card even more.

Pretty soon you have paid double compared to waiting and paying cash for resale but that's your business.

I thought about many of the same things when making my purchasing decision. In the end, no amount of convenience, bonus miles, incentives, etc. could convince me to purchase direct and pay close to double the price for what was essentially the same product. (I only use DVC to stay at DVC properties). That is why I went resale.

If your short term horizon is an important factor in your decision, I would consider doing what a previous poster said and arrange for a one time point transfer. Do the math and see what that does to the numbers. Good luck! :)

I just purchased 50 points direct this week. Since I was already an owner, financing was instant. I was only required to place 10% down and now I have time to either secure cheaper financing, or save and pay it off. Remember, financing through Disney does not have an early pay out fee.
Plus, points were in my account on the next day and I have full benefits of direct points. It's truly a personal choice, for me, the positives outweighed the negatives.
FYI, I paid $123/point for the 50 points at SSR, which was already my home resort.

Just curious, if you don't mind me asking, how did you manage to get this price? I thought SSR was selling for $130 and there were no incentives.

BTW, Congratulations on your 50 points!

I also just got $7 off per point. This was an option for all of the sold out resorts.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know they were offering any incentives on the classic resorts except for BWV several months ago.

For an add-on that size, I'm hard-pressed to see why a direct purchase would be a good idea. If the timing doesn't work out, you would be better off renting points via transfer from another owner for that 8-months-from-now reservation and also buying resale vs. buying direct.

Comparing apples to apples, you easily should be able to save $50pp on SSR resale versus direct. On 100 points that's $5000 for the same product.

If it were me, I'd buy the resale without any rush, and use the $5k difference to book a cash trip at the Poly, eat signature every day, and buy park tickets. And get the SSR points resale for my next trip, after the eight month out plans are past.

Or stay at a moderate or offsite in eight months, and bank that money.

My point is that you're proposing to spend a lot of money for essentially nothing. Consider what else you could do with $5k, before throwing it away.

We often debate on whether to buy extra points or do a point transfer to allow our points to stretch further. So far math has always worked out such that it makes sense to do a point transfer...

Last year I transferred in 200 VGC points so I even was able to take the edge of with the home resort advantage I needed this year...

Not knowing how many points you have that you are adding too I wasn't able to see if your math would be similar or of every year you would also need the extra 100 points vs some only really need 50, but the math is probably worth it!

DVC doesn't do a good job supporting point transfers. They don't show up in your account, you can't use them when booking online and MS often has trouble accessing them a applying them correctly to reservations.

We used a point transfer once and due to MS issues we lost our reservation.

I was prepared for some difficulty here but the only part that is hard is picking the right use ear for a transfer to avoid dealing with MS being confused about the weird period of time when my use year and the transfer use year don't overlap. I figure that for decades we didn't have online booking and since I used my transfer for an 11 month window I wasn't that concerned about the hour that I lost (infact, I waited a week I think?). Overall - for a point insurgence into my account (basically one years worth of points), I will probably do it again...

As you noted, it's been discussed a lot lately. Given your stated info, you'd be better off taking your chances on the resale and hoping you could use them for the trip in 8 months. Even if you can't,you'd still come out ahead with resale even if you have to pay cash for that given trip.
