First Time Cruise

Planning to take the family on our first Disney Cruise, but I am very overwhelmed by the number of choices of staterooms on the different ships. We are a family of 5 with children ages 14, 9, and 4. Looking at the Magic and Fantasy for a 7 day cruise. Which category stateroom should we choose and a verandah is not a must? Actually would probably prefer a room without a verandah due to the 4 year old.

Well you would need a Stateroom that sleeps 5.
The link below gives you the staterooms on the Fantasy and the type/class of room. Ie- 4A sleep up to 5 and has a veranda.

Staterooms that sleep up to 5 are : 4A.4B.4C.4D.8A.8B.8C.8D.

The beds in the Staterooms are -

The Queen Bed
Ceiling pull Down Bed(Single)
The Couch Bed (single)
The Murphy Bed (Single comes out from the Wall)
This is the Max amount and some rooms have missing one, usually the Murphy or the Ceiling bed.

Some Cruisers have been known to try and get two Connecting lower class rooms which sometimes can cost about the same as a 4A.

8d is the category I booked for the fantasy, which is the deluxe family stateroom with the big porthole. Some of those category sleep 5. It includes a sofa bed, drop down berth bed and a Murphy bed as the extra 3. No verandah

For a family of five with no verandah:

Magic
You would need to book two rooms in categories 11C to 9A—you plus two kids in one room, and your spouse plus the last kid in the other room. once you're onboard you can sleep whereever you want, but that's how it will have to be booked. Category 11B and above would have a limited number of rooms that connect. All the rooms that sleep 5+ on the Magic have a verandah: 4D-4A and the concierge suites.

Fantasy
You can book a porthole-only room that sleeps 5; they would be categories 8D-8A. The 8As have two large portholes instead of one.
The verandah rooms that sleep 5 are the same as the Magic with the addition of the Cat V concierge room, which is the same size as a Cat 4 but comes with concierge furnishings and benefits.

We get two rooms, 6000 and 6002. They are connecting ocean view room up front. You really only see the front of the ship, so no real view. We love it because for a reasonable price we have a parents room and a kids room. While the room has a reg and a sofa bed we take the sofa bed from our room and put it under the window for a special under the stars view. since the window wall is at an angle you end up with extra space, big enough for a mattress on the floor with out losing any real floor space.

We have an 8A booked on the Fantasy, for next May. In addition to the 2 large Portholes they are also a bit larger than than most staterooms.

Do any of the 8a's sleep 5? For some reason I thought they only slept 3-4. I know the one I'm booked in only sleeps 3.

To the OP, if you start trying to make a booking on the Disney website (inputting 5 people), it will bring up available staterooms for 5. Look at a ship map to see which ones are in a location you like. The porthole staterooms on the Fantasy that sleep 5 look great.
