TEMPORARY Refrigerator Removal from WDW Resorts

My husband's medication requires medication. I hope that there are arrangements to back up the first come/first served refrigerators available.

Will be keeping my fingers crossed they are done replacing them by my Nov trip since I need one for my insulin.

Saw this on another site: We were just able to confirm that the fridges in the Family Suites at Disney's Art of Animation Resort, as well as the Family Suites at Disney's All-Star Music Resort, are NOT affected by this removal.

Can a TA confirm?

Yes, Disney just said the suites are not affected.

I have just called and asked about POFQ and was told that their refrigerators will be replaced in plenty of time for our November trip! No need to worry about DD's medications now! :goodvibes

Did they raise the rates an additional $10/night when they added the fridges? I know rates go up every year, but when they added the fridges to the room, did they tack $10 extra on each night?

If it were me, I would either pack a fold up cooler, or buy a cheap one when I get there, and then utilize the ice machines.

I am just venting. We are using ME so no way to stop and buy a cooler. Will need to pack one in my luggage which means less room in my suitcase.

Hoping POFQ will have the frigs replaced by October.

Feel bad for people arriving this summer that need lots of water in the heat and no frig in the room. Disney could make lots more $$ on people having to buy cold milk, water at the resorts rather than bringing their own or ordering groceries.

I understand, I always just kind of chuckle when people want a discount for the absence of something that was free to begin with.

what about if you need them for medical reasons? Wondering if I should send an email to my TA?

It would only be logical that a more-than-sufficient number of fridges would be reserved for guests with medical needs.

It used to cost $10/day to rent a frig from Disney, Shouldn't we all get a $10/night discount?
:scratchin Space Mountain is going to be down for a few days of my trip. What sort of a discount might that fetch?

Nothing is really "free." Not everyone reads these boards or follows "breaking" Disney news. For guests that plan perishable grocery delivery and arrive to find a letter in their rooms advising that they do not have a fridge, that's a real bummer. And I don't think it's unreasonable to request an accommodation of some kind.

Does anyone know if they will be replaced at Caribbean Beach? We arrive 8/11, I would never book a room without a fridge with 2 little children! This will be a major inconvenience :(

I would expect the Values will be the last to get the fridges replaced since they were the last to get fridges as a room feature.

Add me to the "I really hope they're replaced before my October trip" list! :hourglass

Perhaps they will put coolers for sale in the resort gift shops until the replacements are complete. This would be very helpful for those without cars. Hopefully not at jacked up prices!

This was just posted on the Disney TA Blog:

"Due to a possible defect in the refrigerators in some of the Guest rooms at the Walt Disney World® and Disneyland® Resorts, as well as Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Resort hotels at these locations have removed or temporarily disconnected Guest room refrigerators until the issue can be resolved.

Guests staying at these Resort hotels will be notified of the refrigerator removal via a letter in their room. Currently the schedule for replacing the refrigerators at these Resorts is expected to last several months."

Anyone have more details?

It's probably related to this http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3126730&highlight=grand+californian

There was an electrical fire in room 5322 of the Grand California Hotel last month ... The fridge apparently caught fire.

I understand nothing is really free, however, I don't recall resort rates going up any more than usual once fridges were added in each room.

There are plenty of reasons to ask for "an accommodation" of some kind. Not having a fridge in the room isn't one, IMO.

We arrive in 39 days at SOG. I have to have a refrigerator because of insulin use. Do you think SOG is included in this or not since it's not technically a Disney owned resort?

I highly doubt this includes SoG, since as you said, it isn't a Disney resort.

I just talked to the IPO at the Poly and they said the refrigerators were not being removed or disconnected.

My thoughts...the refrigerators being in the cabinets in the resorts causes them to not be very cold. It is often suggested to open the door of the cabinet in order to allow air to circulate which effectively cools the fridge. It would make sense to move the refrigerators to an area without a cabinet but there most likely isn't room to do so. Alternatively, Disney can opt to remove the door to the cabinets but that might not look attractive (holes where the screws were would need to be filled and retouched). I imagine they are ordering refrigerators that will work without the need for airflow or they will be replacing some of the furniture. elaw's post makes sense as to why Disney is recalling all the refrigerators at the same time. If they pose a fire hazard, Disney is being cautious. Otherwise, it would make more sense to replace a few at a time. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that the suites and the DVC resorts have the refrigerators in cabinets and that would be the reason they don't need to be replaced. Either that or they are different brands/models.
