I know there is an Animal Kingdom thread and with tons of GREAT info, but I am going there September 22nd with group of 8, kids are 2,3,8 and want to know your 2 or 3 best TIPS or Secrets for the resort , so as not to miss out on the Magic of the AKL!!!!!

If you are in a savannah view room, definitely bring (or if you don't already have them, invest in and bring) a good set of binoculars. Forget the small cheap stuff (Bushnell), get Nikon or (if you really want to splurge) Canon. These will make all the difference between just seeing vague shapes in the distance vs. getting up good and close on baby giraffes and prancing impalas.

Boma is really really good. I haven't tried it yet for breakfast but for dinner, it is not to be missed. Same for jiko. The cheesecake at the Mara is outstanding and even better than the zebra domes. ;). One of the best gift shops on property, scope it out many times during your trip. I really want to try out the sunset safari one time...it looks awesome. Be prepared to have it be your favorite resort...my sister was a die hard wl fan and after staying there, and it was like pulling teeth to get her there...all she talks about is akl. :goodvibes

I have a question about the animals and night viewing. Do the animals get locked up in a barn at night or are they still allowed to wander the savannahs after dark? If they aren't locked away at night, I'd love to buy my own set of night vision goggles and camp out on my balcony at night to observe them.

unless a hurricane is a comin', the animals get to choose.

Stayed here a couple times we had the best time doing the sunrise safari at animal kingdom. You go in before park opens and do the safari at feeding time and they stop at the animals so you can get great pictures and they talk about them in detail. Loved it but when we did it you had to stay at concierge level don't know if that's still true definetly fun. You also get breakfast at Tusker house but again don't know if that's changed either. Have fun definetly do the pool activities and resort activities.

Night Vision goggles, they have activities for the kids-check at front desk for information

Be aware the night vision goggles they have for guest use are understandably worn (dirty lenses) and are not particularly high resolution. Also, the images are in shades of green, not color. We found daytime viewing with good binoculars we brought with us to be much more fruitful.

If you have a video camera that has night vision as an option it works as well for viewing and taping :thumbsup2 They only have a few at the viewing location so if you want on your balcony you would need to bring your own.

There is beautiful African art throughout the resort along with a few spots you can view out glass walls, walk all around the resort in the guest room areas to check it out.

Always surprised how empty the balcony/porches are that face the savanna on either side of the lobby. Anyone can sit and use these, great views. So relaxing and peaceful.

Sunset Overlook Room just past the front desk on left. Walk through it and there is a door out to a balcony overlooking that Savanna.

1-Sit around the fireplace. It was a warm relaxing way to hang out for a while
2-explore the trails around the resort and talk to the CM's. They have so much great info to share
3-Enjoy the resort, explore and take your time to see what fun things are going on.

There are animals out all night. When we were there the night time temp dropped into the 50s so the giraffes remained in their barn.

Most of the wild animals like the lions and other dangerous animals are taken in. You can not see those from your room. Only the Zebras, giraffes and some others.:)

There are no predators (e.g., lions) at AKL. All animals free roam for 22 of 24 hours. Called in for 2 hour vet checks, etc.

Lunch with an Animal Specialist at Sanaa. Great food and fascinating information...

Take advantage of the resort activities, most people don't. We did the cookie decorating and it was a lot of fun. We also enjoyed the marshmallow roast.

So many things to see and do at AKL!
We liked listening to The Cultural Exchange speakers in the evening, in the Sunset Room. Boma/Jiko culinary tour, night vision, movies by the pool, talking with the CMs and walking around the resort. Great resort shop. Mara has really good dinner specials. Pool area is beautiful. Lots of Art work all over the resort.

I was going to say the same thing, no predators are at AKL savanna. You would have some very traumatized folks if there were:rotfl:
