Cons to purchasing resale

Hello. After being on DCL, I sat through a DVC presentation. Now that I'm completely interested, what is the downside to resale? What perks won't I get if I bought directly from Disney?

Those who purchase DVC via resale after March, 2011 are not able to use their points for the Disney Collection (non-DVC Disney resorts, Disney Cruise Line - including DVC Member Cruises), Adventurer Collection (ABD), and the Concierge Collection but still have access to all DVC Resorts and the World Passport Collection. Resale purchase will also take a little longer to make that first reservation as compared to those purchasing directly from Disney (the difference is about 8 - 12 weeks). Be sure to research what value those programs would be to you before making any decision. Many feel the greatest benefit using DVC points is for reservations at DVC Resorts and regard the other options only as a second choice.

Once a member though, resale purchasers are treated the same as any other member.

In a word, no. Ussing your points for cruises and the disney collection are a poor use of points. Your best use if points is with dvc. We have two resale contracts and five direct. We notice no difference in the points. We always use our points at disney. Our most recent purchase was at 60 a point. Disney is charging 150 for grand Floridian right now the price gap is huge.

We get our resale. Disney's price is the price but you can make an offer. We have 348 points at BLT Disney wanted around $50,000!! We paid $28,500!! That's a REALLY BIG difference!!

Not in my opinion. And those options are not guaranteed to stay with the program even for direct buyers and there have been times that there hasn't been availability to book cruises with points. Those options also take a lot of points.

If you plan to primarily use DVC points to stay at DVC resorts, resale is a very practical, economical option and, if sometime you want to use your points for a non-DVC option, you could still rent your points, pay cash and still come out ahead.

Definitely NOT a deal breaker to purchase resale. If the non-DVC options are important to you there are other timeshare opportunities that may be less costly to meet those needs.

Please conside how you want to use your points before making your purchase decision. Resale should not be a deal breaker.

The adventures by disney trips require such high point amount pp that it is unrealistic for many members anyway. Cruises also use a lot of points. As for the disney collection, most of the deluxe resorts at wdw have dvc meaning you cant use points for hotel rooms anyway. Resale is so much cheaper than direct that it is hard to find a downside.

I find this to be a matter of perspective. Those that know what they are getting into (a little legwork, a 10-12 week wait, etc.) have no problem purchasing resale. Those that obsess over every segment of the resale purchase have a hard time with it. Just look at the ROFR thread for examples.

I've had greater patience tests purchasing direct to be perfectly honest.

The biggest con for resale used to be the length of the process as compared with purchasing direct. But Disney has created lengthy wait lists for the classic resorts (excluding VGF, AKV and Aulani), and the waits on those lists have exceeded even some of the longest resale processes.

I would add another con to resale is not being able to find "exactly" what you want in a contract. Or the time it could take to find exactly the combo of points/resort/use year you want. If you have patience and some flexibility in what you are looking for this is not a big deal, but for some who want want they want now, buying direct gives you much closer to instant gratification.

I agree...you have to be flexible and possibly willing to buy more points, different UY, stripped contracts, etc.

For new buyers, its a lot easier to be flexible since they aren't necessarily waiting to match UY--which, IMO, is the hardest aspect for those of us that are already owners.

Of course, when we decided to buy more points, we found a BWV contract that we really liked but different UY--it was more than we were originally planning--150 vs. 100--so we ended up just buying it, and selling off a 30 point BLT contract we had to help off set the difference.

Having the second UY, but with 150 points, has made using it with my June UY much easier...

If the trip you want to use points for is six months from now, that might not work well.

By resale for a trip a year or more out, not one for six months from now.

If you buy direct, once Disney has a deposit they'll make a reservation for you (subject to availability with travel after your closing).

So, you can still buy points for classic resorts from Disney? Just want to make sure I understand correctly.... that means, you can buy Beach Club, WL, etc. via non-resale? For some reason I thought you could only buy AKL and Grand Floridian Villas through Disney right now?

Yes...the guides will try to persuade you for one of the others and they may not have the points "in stock" and you will have to go on a waiting list, but if that is what you really want, ask for it.

Our guide this weekend told us he had people on the BCV waitlist for "more than two years" and Disney would no longer be ROFR any more BCV contracts. I should just forget about getting BCV. He would be glad to sell me lots of VGF points though.

Well he's actually a timeshare sales person. : And wants to sell to you now, not some date in the future.
