China: Enchanted China Meets Thread

Lynn, I'll answer you quickly here then I'll send you an e-mail and tell you about my China trip. Still getting my "groove" back from my 2 weeks in China. Didn't do Adventures by Disney. It was Anna, 17 year old Chinese girlfriend (grandson's Chinese tutor) and Tripadvisor.com. It was an amazing trip. I am putting the Hong Kong Disneyland Guidemap in the mail for you. You will love Hong Kong Disneyland - it is just a minature Disneyland/Disneyworld in every respect. So glad we saved it for the last. We were there June 3 - overcast so the temp wasn't bad. They have 4 rides we don't have here - only got on 1 as the lines were more than an hour long. I loved the Disneyland Hotel, the grounds, the train - it was the perfect way to end a fantastic trip. I want to go to Vietnam - so hope to do it with Adventure by Disney but need to do the Baltic next Summer. So sad Disney isn't going there so guess I'll have to be satisfied with Holland.

Thank you SO MUCH! You will love the Baltic too!

Can anyone describe what can of plug adapter (or converter?) we will need for our chargers and hair dryer.

Thanks!!!

You can probably leave the hair dryer at home since all of the hotels have them.

The Peninsula Hotels (Beijing and Shanghai) have North American plugs (and voltage!) so you don't need an adapter. It might help if you had a power bar though if you have a lot of stuff to charge. The plugs are located on the desk. The North American voltage ones in the Peninsula are ONLY on the desk.

The Shangrila hotels ... I think we used the European/Asia plug adapter.

I can't remember if we used the above plug in the Shangrila in Hong Kong. Hong Kong usually uses the same plugs as the UK... the giant 3 prong plug.

I thought I'd add that because of some advice here on the Disboards, I bought a power bar that I could use over there. I found a place that sold 220 volt power bars (it's a German power bar made in China. :rotfl:). If you can find the dual voltage power bars, even better!

I can use it when I travel in Europe now too.

We have travel power strips that we bought from Magellan's that we take with us whenever we travel. That and adaptors for the proper area.

I was just about to ask about adapters! Thanks for the info!

We are SO excited about out ABD China trip mid-July! We got our cool box/trunk with the back packs - I won't let DH throw the box/trunk away yet - just too creative!

We got our visas at the end of last week so we really are good to go at this point. FYI for anyone with an internationally adopted child.... the visa process was a bit scary. Our DD15 was adopted as an infant from Vietnam, carries a US passport, citizen, etc. Apparently, that can cause the Chinese to "think" about whether or not to grant her a visa!!!! (The facilitator said it was even a bit more dicey if she was born in China!) After providing copies of nearly all of her original adoption paperwork, she was granted a visa. Just irritates me that she can't be treated like any other US citizen.... So, if you were gifted with an internationally adopted child, start the visa process as early as reasonable!

The Chinese government is funny about their "citizens". I think they think born Chinese, always theirs. My dad was born in Hong Kong and hasn't lived there since the early 60's. And even then, Hong Kong was a British colony at the time. He had a British passport then. Now as a Canadian, when he applied for the visa, they asked for his old Hong Kong identity card and birth certificate. A passport wasn't enough. Thankfully, for whatever reason, he kept it after over 50 years. Even then, his visa was completed 1 day later than ours. Your daughter is in good company. :rotfl2:

Anyone remember what time you met the very first day of the adventure? Wanting to plan a day tour the first day....

Which trip will you be going on?

We're going (our first time with ABD!) on the July 14th trip. Can't believe it's just next week.

I'm working on getting our Visas for China. They require "proof of hotel reservation, etc." I was planning on just printing out the reservation confirmation pdf that ABD emailed us. Has anyone tried that successfully? It just lists the hotels. Or is there something with more concrete proof that we're supposed to give them.

When I went in 2008 I sent all the information from ABD and had no problems.

Looks like ABD switched their hotels in Chengdu. We're now staying at the Ritz. Apparently it just opened last Oct!

Getting very excited. We've booked a private guide for couple of pre days in Beijing. We're going to see the Temple of Heaven. I try to make an attempt to see all the Epcot landmarks :) Looking for other ideas in Beijing...

By what the news programs say you must be so happy you are traveling to China rather than Russia. China must be having a good chuckle about the Olympic hotels being , how do I say this, not ready for human living. I'm sure the Ritz is first class for China seems to really put a lot of focus on improving their tourist trade.
