Long title, but how cool - come on, eating a krispy kreme and watching us go through the final part of the Gatun Locks - it's pretty cool.

We got food in Beach Blanket Buffet and found a table along the windows.

Really a neat view from the tables along the side as you look over the side of the ship and can see just how close we are to the walls of the lock.

Also you could watch everything from the goofy pool as they played the ship's camera on the funnel vision. And look how nice the pool deck looks with all the towels neatly on the chairs - like a first class resort!

Breakfast - not the best today - think we got there after the crowds and pickings were slimmer - didn't eat too much of this breakfast. But did have a tall glass of Coke - I really needed some caffeine!

But can you beat this view? no. no you can't.

At least Dad didn't think so.

we're being watched.

This is a photo from the back of the ship looking to where we came from and to another ship going through the locks we just exited:

By 7:45am we were out of Gatun Lock and done with breakfast!

Next we zigzag through the lake - a result of the lake being a man-made lake created by flooding the valley that surrounded an existing river - so we're actually following the original path of the river (deeper water). And we anchor at 8:30 in the lake until we can continue on. Military ships and cargo ships will sometimes have to anchor over night and for hours in the freshwater lake - I've been told by former crew members of either - they use the time to wash down the ships with the abundant freshwater from the lake.

Just saying it would be better with Dunkin. Well at least I think so. ;)

So after breakfast...

We took some photos off the back of the ship

Last looks before we enter the lake

Once we got into the lake, more people left the railings and went to the pools.

and we did too!

was fun to have the funnel vision showing the view on the water - didn't feel like we were missing anything while goofying around.

I wonder if the folks at home saw this too?

DSis and I went up to the 10th Deck to take more photos. It was so fun when the other ships would go by while in the lake - they seem to come so close. And often they would blow their horn to us and we would blow our "when you wish upon a star" horn in reply.

In case there was any doubt - these are not islands, they are the tops of mountains and hills:

Pools got a little more and more crowded

And a band set up on stage

A regular ship highway

DSis and I settled on some sun chairs on the 10th deck looking out to the water - was so interesting with the pockets of land poking up now and then

Signs of life out there that's not a bug, bird or butterfly

The little coffee cart they had set up sometime after 5am.

Not what this area looked like from 5:30 - 7:30am

Here's a shot from earlier taken with DSis' camera

and this is cool - you see how close the ship behind us was to the wall as well

DSis was impressed with the rain forest as well

cool royal palms in there

This is the former American part

Mom and Dad found a chair to share on the 4th deck (or mom sat it in and dad stood by the railing unless mom needed to use the restroom and then dad got to "hold her spot"). They didn't want to miss anything by going inside. DSis and I decided to have a nice lunch since breakfast was ehe. We went to Triton's for a sit down lunch and requested a table by the windows.

We were seated right away and joined a table with a couple from New Jersey that cruise on various cruise lines practically all year. They were staying on the 2nd deck and said how great it was to see the walls of the lock cover the portholes. We decided to try to experience the locks from the 3rd or 4th deck later.

But now, lunch

you have to admit - this was a good plan - a cocktail and a view

it was so fun seeing these cargo ships go by so close and so fast

back to the food... I had Halibut for the hellovit.

by dessert the heavens opened and the afternoon rain hit

Going through the Cut

we didn't miss seeing us go under the famous bridge - but we did it without getting wet and while eating this

not bad. not bad at all!

If I can, this is what I had for lunch on canal day.

Thanks for the great pictures and report...after seeing your pictures going through the canal....I'm thinking I really need to do this cruise. Thanks for sharing.

My sister forgot to post my favorite picture of the morning that she took. She used my camera for this one and while she was lining up the shot I kept nagging her that goofy wasn't centered. Boy did I have to eat crow because this picture turned out so good - definitely postcard worthy :goodvibes

:thumbsup2 Nice!

After lunch we went to the 4th deck to join mom and dad.

From the 4th deck we were protected from the rain and had a fun view - closer to the water level.

A pilot boat arrives to begin escorting us to the Pedro Miguel Locks.

Locals came out in droves to see our ship and the Wonder played her "when you wish upon a star" horn to cheering onlookers.

Minnie joined us at the rail and stood on tip toes to wave to the children on shore. In return, people in their cars honked and waved.

From the 4th deck, DSis and I ran down to the third deck atrium windows to see what it was like to see the inside of the walls of the locks.

When we rose we came back to the 4th deck to watch as we passed through the canal along with another cargo ship.

Was fun to stand and wave to people working on the canal and on the cargo ship.

according to the log we got at the end of the cruise, we went into the Pedro Miguel Lock at 1:53pm and exited the lock at 2:38pm.

It's been so much fun seeing your photos and remembering what a wonderful trip this was.

You did a great job showing how little room there was on either side of the canal as the Wonder went through. I didn't see any mention of my favorite new word: Panamax. If a ship can fit through the canal without a lot of extra space it is called Panamax.

We now use this word a lot, though probably not in its true sense. Such as, I can't believe I ate all that food--I'm Panamax! Or, since I did eat that much food, these pants are Panamax!

Keep up the great report...

:wave2:
What a great word! Thanks for following along and posting. Still so many photos to go!

We have a ridiculous number of photos but thought I'd add a few more to what my sister has thus far posted.

Is this a river cruise?

Wilson!!! Looks very castaway-ish to me :goodvibes

and now we are in Waterworld...

And the tour of the movies continues with Crocodile Dundee

Your turn name this movie...

At lunch I snuck out of tritons to snap these...

All the spectators at Pedro

"A little to the left"

I'm just floored to at how little space there isbetween the ship and the walls of the locks. :scared1: Talk about control and everything lining up just right.

Love the Minnie pics!

You probably mentioned it, but who was the Captain for this sailing?

Captain Fabian was our captain. The "regular" captain on the Wonder at the time was Captain Thor, but he reportedly took some time off for family reasons--I think it was to attend his son's graduation. We were told that Captain Fabian was gracious enough to fill in. It's nice to know that the captains are willing to help each other when needed.
