A rabbi, a priest, and a pastor board the Wonder: we're back!

Alison, I'm not ignoring your guys' conservation, just reading along and taking notes. I've had a weight problem my whole life, lost and gained back a 100 pounds twice. I'm back on track and trying to lose it again. But will definitely not be that careful on vacation.

You've got that here. I'd have to be eating like 500 calories a day for my body to go into starvation mode. Maybe have your thyroid checked?

Starvation mode is generally linked to calorie intake, which is a flawed way to look at it. Starvation is actually a function of nutrients as much as it is calories. It's possible for someone to be perfectly healthy on 1000 cals per day if they are getting enough of the necessary nutrients, while someone on 1600 cals per day might not be if they are falling short in required nutrients.

It also really depends on current weight. Starvation mode is tied to that so what that number is for one, will be very different than another. There are a lot of myths about it that is for sure!

I'm so glad you guys are talking about weight and what is working for you. I struggle with my weight too and am finding this all very inspiring.

:goodvibes Vacation is defiantly not the time to begin to make changes. I find though that my healthier changes spill over even when on vacation, most of the time, just because I don't feel great if I'm stuffed silly. For me quantity is a huge factor. Hate diet food, always have, always will. Portion control is key. I'm sure I eat too much fats.

I run very well on a balanced 1200 calories a day.

Thanks ladies. I'm already doing things. I don't eat sweets. Occasionally, yes. But I'm not one who woukd eat a container of Ben and Jerry's in a sitting. More like four sittings. I also don't drink diet soda. Coffee, water, iced tea and wine. Unfortunately my portion sizes are already pretty small.

Germ killer is mine and Brandi's (dgbg100206) sarcastic term for spirits and wine. When a bunch of people on the AKL thread were sick, we joked that we made sure to kill the germs with plenty of drinks! Hence the term "germ killler".

I don't think anyone should be that careful on vacation, it's part of the point! I do agree it spills over though. I've worked out the last 4 vacations and have never done that before in my life! Not my normal schedule but still, just even the idea before wouldn't have even crossed my mind but somehow...I felt compelled to at least do a little something. So bizarre. In a good way but odd and new.

:goodvibes Hey, random cruise question for you! Wasn't there somewhere you really like in San Juan for hotel? It's ridiculously far away to me but there is a FB meet thread for the cruise (I can PM you the link if you like, I don't think you are on it?) and a lot of hullaballo over a AAA rate at the Sheraton right there at the port. Rate doesn't seem anything spectacular to me but maybe I'm missing something.

For me it's as much ingredient control as it is portion. Really small portions of certain things can be really dangerous to me. Like mac and cheese! OMG I love my homemade mac and cheese but OMG once I put the ingredients in to myfitnesspal...yikes. I am with you on diet food. Balance is key. That's where myfitnesspal really helped me make some tweaks. Calories weren't horribly off but the nutrition...not always so good. 1200 is weight loss mode for me, I need more than that.

I'm sure you are doing lots of things! Not remotely implying or assuming you aren't and I truly hope you don't take it that way. All I am saying is that for me, using some kind of food log that really tracked the content really helped me understand exactly what it all added up to be. So for example I eat a fair amount of oatmeal. I love raisins in it. I was probably putting 3/4 cup in my bowl. It's fruit, it's fiber, it's healthy. But the sugar content in that alone was nuts! I've dropped it to 1/4 cup. Trail mix. I love trail mix as a snack, and it's healthy right? Sure..in 1/4c increments. Who wants only 1/4 cup? That's not even a handful lol. But knowing the impact having more than that had..has helped.

It's my downfall too. Ok that and cheese and chips. Honestly, when I was in weight loss mode I made sure I burned enough that day, to justify my wine that night. One 6 oz glass is about 114 calories. I don't know about you but my glasses just might be bigger than that and well, I may have more than one. 45 minutes of walking is worth one glass of wine, so is 50 minute of house cleaning but even better, so is 30 minutes of gardening. :thumbsup2 I will say I did give up beer for the most part about a year and a half ago. Not for weight loss reasons but because I have issues with carbonation. Pretty much stick to wine and that does help and we limit it to certain nights of the week as well as amount. Jeff cut beer to Fridays only, switching to wine, and just that alone helped him lose some.

I haven't even looked at hotels yet. Guess I am a slacker! :rotfl: I would love the link to the FB meet thread.

Yay! Scholarship conversations are good! If you guys need anything when K is in town, let me know. I have a spare bedroom that's always open. :)

Awwww, thanks! Jeff's mom lives there so grandma is in HEAVEN having her there for a week, even if 3 days of it are residential at CSU. We still see, not at all sure it's the right academic fit but it is an amazing school. One of my engineers played a year of softball there so I got her take on the athletic program so that was good. Probably going to have K meet her over lunch.

Oh good...didn't realize Jeff's mom lived here...even better. :) Hope K finds the right school for her (with a full ride scholarship ;) )

I signed up for MyFitnessPal and typed in all my food and drink for yesterday. I was fine until I put the wine in! :lmao: Then I was WAAAAAAY over!

This might cause me to think a little more about this!

Oh I SO know that feeling. Wait till you enter a margarita. :rotfl:

WAY TO GO for even entering it! :cool1::cool1: That is awesome.

One huge thing is to realize not every can or will be under...I found looking at the whole week really helped me balance it out. I could go 300 over one day...and make it up 100 at a time over 3.

Yep! We will actually be out in August visiting. No clue on schedules yet but I will keep you posted :goodvibes

Uh-oh. We have both Margaritas and Mac-n-Cheese on the menu tonight!

ruh row! :rotfl: I'm actually hoping to have Margaritas on the menu too although Jeff doesn't know it yet. Friday is my no cook night and we had horrible mexican a couple of weeks ago (the dangers of coupons) and need a do over.

Mexican is hard I think. I adore it but oh it shoots the calories for sure. Just a grande margarita, chips and salsa comes in close to 600 calories and you haven't really had any food yet! Even at home, my fajitas which outside of the flour tortilla is very healthy...eat 2 of them and you are at almost 1000 calories. Really carbs are hard. All of them. That's with nothing to drink, no sour cream, no guac, no refried beans. Homemade mac and cheese (which I won't pretend is remotely healthy but it does taste good) about the same and that's a pretty small portion. All I know is seeing that in black and white does motivate me to burn the calories as well, darn it, I want 2 fajitas, not one! And they aren't big ones either. LOL! And sometimes yeah, I need my mac and cheese.

It is crazy how the stuff adds up so fast. I mean I had what I'd consider a normal healthy lunch for me today (1 can tuna, 2 slices whole grain rye, 2oz extra sharp cheddar, no mayo or dressing). No breakfast except for black coffee. No snacks either. Assuming I don't burn any calories today, to maintain my current weight, all I could eat for the rest of the day/night is a whopping 758 calories. Subtract that margarita and chips and well...I get 158 left for real food. Skip the chips and maybe I get 300. That right there tells me I better go run. :rotfl:

I find that to be true too. Unfortunately I'll be over ALL weekend. We've got a crazy fun weekend planned but that means food and drink!

Good for you Alison. I posted my email. It doesn't share what everyone is eating just shows little milestones. It's a great app.

Gabby had to go to the Instacare today while at camp in CO. :sad1: All it was was an infected ingrown toenail but camp didn't have the numbing shots. I was wracking my brain thinking: who lives in CO that I can call when I first got the call. I was freaking out a little. They ended up not cutting it out but giving her an antibiotic.
