Designed a Craft Room - Now What Crafts To Make?

We just finished re-designing a spare bedroom into a craft room. I have a small desk area, 9 cube drawer book/craft supplies case, an iron board. I will need to buy supplies. I did purchase a label maker because my first project is to label a photo album (pictures so I will remember what they are).

My questions are:

1. What supplies should I purchase as general must have supplies?

2. What crafts to make? Not an artsy person at all.

3. Are there other organizer things I should have? I will also move my sewing repair stuff into the mix.

4. Is making bead jewlery hard or expensive?

5. What are the "in" crafts right now?

I would like to do that too. Interested to hear what others say. I do think the bead making can get expensive. I was thinking about getting a sewing machine because I have lots of fabric from my mom's house, but don't know what to make except cover pillows. good luck

There are a ton of different crafts you can do and I wouldn't recommend going out and getting a bunch of stuff until you are sure that you have an interest. Do you have any friends that do any type of crafting that can show you some basics to see whether or not you would like it?

I personally do papercrafts like scrapbook and stamping.

I guess I'm a little confused. It seems to me that the desire to do a craft would come, then the craft room. It's hard to design a work space when you don't really know what you'll be doing there.

Do you have any desire to scrapbook?

Sounds like you should have dabbled in it for a while before renovating your home.

you did it backwards. First you start crafting, acquire a ton of supplies aimed at the type of craft you do, then buy the storage that fits what you own.

Never heard of anyone making the room, THEN filling it up.

I make cards for military to use to write home to their families & friends.


Reminds me of people I know who bought an RV, then found out they don't even like to camp. LOL

This room was already a room I do my ironing and sewing in. We just repainted, put laminate in, and put in a couple of inexpensive pieces of furniture. I got a colorful standing lamp and some Mickey art I am going to hang. No investments I wasn't planning on already doing. It's just really nice and now I need to find some crafts to try. I have already tried scrapbooking (made a few very nice ones), cross stich.

Goodness, people. She put a storage piece and an ironing board in a room. She didn't build a new room or "renovate".

OP, if you sew, I would definitely move all of that in there. Then I would take it slow with buying supplies, trying out new crafts until you find the one you prefer. Doing some searches for crafts, homemade holiday decorations, or beginning sewing (scrapping/floral arranging/beading/crochet/felting etc) will bring up pinterest, instructables, blog posts- lots of places to get ideas. Have fun!

Colorful mesh door wreaths are very popular here.

Cracks me up to see the beautiful quilting garage dmil has created out of her husband's Harley Davidson garage since his death 2 years ago. The space is air conditioned, too. She has all of her things well organized, installed new lighting and has the huge batting frame all ready to go. I just love it for her!!

If I were you I'd search Pinterest and etsy for inspiration. Every crafter has their own likes and dislikes. So go and look at other crafts and get inspired, try and figure out how hey did that.

I did make wine bottles with lights in them for Christmas presents (really turned out nice!) but my husband had to drill the holes with a glass cutting drill bit and it cracked many a wine bottle. So for every 1 bottle that he succeeded in drilling the hole, 4 broke. We did have fun drinking the wine to get more wine bottles...

Oh how I would love to have a room dedicated to crafts, I'm jealous! I've never done this but if you have a craft store near you, they sometimes have classes. I don't know what type & how much but you could check it out, take a class in something to see if you'd like it before going out & buying supplies.

There are so many crafts out there it's difficult to make suggestions without knowing what you like. Roam around the craft store, look at the free little project sheets, you'll find something that interests you.

Crafts.....oh how I love them. I'm a painter. But I also love trying new things. This summer I am attempting to upcyle some chicken feed bags into Totes or some other goodies that I am trying to come up with.

I've always found it easiest to get my feet wet in a new craft by locating a class for it. Usually Michael's and Hobby Lobby offer various classes.

If you're interested in a specialty, also check out stained glass supply stores, yarn stores, scrapbooking, quilt shops, bead shops, fabric stores for sewing classes, etc. in your area. Everyone usually offers some kind of beginner's course - we all had to start somewhere!

Throughout my 60 yrs, I was a craft queen Learned to sew in middle school, took a drapery making class, did machine quilting, jewelry making, decoupage (back in the day) , polymer clay beads, dried & silk flower arranging, stained glass, oil painting, painted t-shirts (when those were in vogue), counted cross stitch, crocheting...and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.
