Numbered Cube? Seriously??

Just heard from my son that in his school they are not allowed to call them "dice" because it is associated with gambling and may encourage the kids to gamble. They have to call them "numbered cubes" instead.

That's just stupid. Especially given that those 'numbered cubes' dont' have any numbers on them, they have dots.

I grew up playing Bunco (a dice game.)

My GRANDMA taught all of her grandkids how to play and often played with us!!

I love how some idiot decides they're going to affect how kids see things by changing the name of something. When they go home I'm sure they call it dice when they play Yahtzee. It's ridiculous. When will the school administrators/boards learn that kids are impacted more by their family than they ever will be by the pc police?

Seriously, it's like everyone is trying to "out politically-correct" one another, with one absurdity after another.

The fact that the average person wouldn't even make the connection between dice and a negative connotation, tells me that certain people in authority are literally looking for things to be offended by.

Funny, I see the word "number cube" (I've never seen "numbered cube") a lot as I review math materials, and just figured it was one more way to work in a vocabulary word. It never occurred to me that it was about gambling.

This is the DUMBEST thing I've heard in ages. I'd have to pull my kid out of that school. There's no thinking whatever else they think is okay.

My daughter had a part time job working for a city-run after school program. They had decks of cards that were missing cards, so she brought a deck from home. They wouldn't let her use them because they were from one of the casinos in Las Vegas. They said they couldn't use them because they didn't want the parents to think they were promoting gambling.

Playing cards was OK. Playing cards with a deck previously used in a casino was apparently going to turn the kids into gambling addicts. Ridiculous.

I have been thinking about this, and the more I think about it the more ridiculous it seems. If they are THAT worried about not wanting to promote or encourage gambling, then they shouldn't USE those evil 'numbered cubes' in the classroom. And I am just sarcastic and smarty pants enough that if it were my child's classroom I might be tempted to call the school and tell them that if seeing dice called DICE promotes gambling, then doesn't using them do so as well? But I tend to like to cause trouble that way.

And I'd also point out to them that they shouldn't call the way they decide which children can attend the magnet school a lottery, because that would promote gambling too.

So, what if they're not cubes? Some of you are no doubt familiar with things like d4, d8, d12, d10, d20, and the more esoteric shapes.

Hmm... and what do I call my favorite d12? A number dodecahedron? What about the d20? And can I still use "d" in the abbreviation? Maybe it should be a "nc12"? Now THAT sounds disturbing!

I was trying to help DS with his math section on probability. In the examples in his math book it kept talking about "if your rolled a number cube...." I had to ask him what the heck is a number cube? I think that is so stupid they just cant call it dice. Some times I think they change stuff around just to confuse us when we try to help them-lol.

I raised my kids in Reno, NV, heck our high school had a slot tournament as a fundraiser. Poker nights were another biggie. Every school my kids attended had cards that came from the casino's and most classrooms had retired dice. Often the name of the casino was stamped on them. Heck, some of our biggest sponsors were the local casinos, they were the only businesses with lots of money to share!

People really need to get over themselves, this is yet another example of we are getting out of hand in our attempt to be politically correct.

Like someone else said, I'm a teacher and to my knowledge it's never been about gambling.

We call them number cubes or number generators to describe their FUNCTION. I've often called them Dice as well, because dice is a commonly used name for the tool that is used to ..... generate numbers!

Oh my, it must be a conspiracy. Schools are describing dice that are being used as learning tools by their function!

Even in Kindergarten, my students would know that if you're playing a game that needs a number generator and didn't have any dice - you could use a deck of cards. It's all about learning and understanding the functions. It's not just "teacher told us to toss these and do this!"

We get lots of dice and cards donated from local casinos and use them frequently. Why on earth would people think it's somehow "wrong" to refer to them by the function we're using them for?
