The empire strikes back: Disney readies a major Hollywood Studios expansion at Walt Disney World

The Walt Disney Company invested a reported $1 billion remaking its under-performing California Adventure theme park, and was rewarded with an attendance surge of 23% last year, following the debut of the remake's centerpiece Cars Land. After that, the president of the Disneyland Resort, George Kalogridis, was reassigned to Florida, where he's now overseeing the Walt Disney World Resort.

Get ready for history to repeat itself. It looks as though Kalogridis and his team have gotten the green light for a project to remake the Disney's Hollywood Studios park on a scale similar to what Disney just finished at California Adventure.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

The projects will share one very large component -- Cars Land, the highlight of the California Adventure makeover, will come to Florida as part of the Hollywood Studios revamp, according to multiple insider sources. But it won't necessarily be the highlight of the changes coming to the park.

That's because Disney's Hollywood Studios is also getting…

Star Wars Land.

Yep. Multiple sources have told me the long-awaited dream of theme park geeks everywhere is actually happening. Disney's moving ahead with both Cars Land and Star Wars Land at the Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.

From what I'm hearing, Cars Land will replace the Lights, Motors, Action auto stunt show as well as Catastrophe Canyon on the southern edge of the park, providing a logical extension to the existing Pixar Place. The demise of the Backstage Tour also would free up space for an additional attraction in Pixar Place (Monsters Inc? Incredibles?), but I've not yet heard any chatter about that happening in this phase of the park remake.

So what about Star Wars Land? The logical places for that expansion would be on either side of the existing Star Tours ride. From what I've heard, it appears that the expansion would take out the area between Star Tours and the auto stunt show stadium, including the Muppet theater and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids play area. But I've also heard of consideration of going in the opposite direction, which would place the new land on the site of the Backlot Express restaurant and Indiana Jones stunt show theater. Given that the Indy theater's used for several other events throughout the year, and that both the Muppets and Honey I Shrunk the Kids attractions long ago passed the height of their popularity, I'm hearing more forceful arguments for the first option.

This appears to be a five-year project, putting completion in 2018, though Disney could choose to throw money at it and accelerate it by a year.

Imagine a future Disney's Hollywood Studios with Star Wars Land, Cars Land and Pixar Place anchoring the southern half of the park, with Sunset Boulevard, featuring Tower of Terror and Rock 'n Roller Coaster, anchoring the north end. After many months of Universal Orlando pummeling Disney with one popular new expansion after another -- Harry Potter, Transformers, Springfield, and more Harry Potter -- it appears that Disney might, finally, be ready to strike back.

Yes it would be exciting. I read the article earlier today but didn't get a chance to post. I am optimistic. But "chatter" and "sources" are not official information.
This actually seems entirely logical.

If this actually happens, I'm sure DH will be clamoring to go to WDW as soon as Star Wars land opens. We've never been able to go to SWW, but this will be a must see! I wonder if they'll time the opening for the same year (or the summer immediately following) the opening of Star Wars Episode VIII. VII is set for 2015...2017/18 is entirely possible for VIII or IX

Awesome! I'm so glad you started a new thread. It's huge news, ignore the troll(s)!!! Ugh!

An ambitious and appropriate schedule based on theme park statistics recently released. I also respect Robert and have been a long time subscriber to his website. He doesn't use the word "official" so I hold off posting. However, he is usually right.;)

He didnt mention any time or date of an announcement. I've been expecting one of these lands to come for some time now. DHS needs it desperately. I just want to know when. DHS has been dull for a while now this would make the park a definite stop for me anytime.

With apologies all around, there are a lot of well-respected, well-connected bloggers and insiders who end up getting things wrong when plans are amended.

Really wish folks would reserve the word "official" for press releases and other statements which actually come from a named Disney source.

Nothing is official until Disney announces it. Really wish people will stop throwing it in titles.

~Hey twebber55, I don't see Star Wars until 2018 -- Carsland 2017 and Avatar 2015. I really hope you are wrong about Avatar -- 2017 is way too long!

~No apologies are needed. I think it's perfectly acceptable to point out that it's not "official" word from Disney but I don't think the posters are trying to mislead anyone, only when they start attacking and confronting other posters does it become a problem. I feel bad because the OP posted this in another thread -- I thought it was great news so I urged the OP to start a new thread. I'll take the blame for this one, but remember Disney announces stuff all the time that never materializes -- this "official" stuff is becoming too much.

~I hope you don't misread the tone of my post. You're one of my favorite posters -- we share the same views on FP+ and I agree with the majority of your posts, but we'll have to disagree here.

I don't think they are trying to mislead anyone either. I heard similar info from a trusted source before either of these threads were started so I believe it to be true.

Also, I see your point (I think it was in the other thread) about people seeming like trolls about the whole "official" thing. However, look at it from the other side. Why do people keep posting "official" and "confirmed" when they know the reaction it will get if it isn't from an official source?

Sadly, Some folks just to like to pick a fight, when there is no fight to pick!;)

With that said, I see this as more and more evidence that changes are coming to WDW.

I'm trying to be reserved about this one, I would love for it to be true but that's an awful lot of money to be spent at one time.

I will say that if this does happen, this will make my family extremely excited and the time frame works out perfect for us, by the time of completion, my boys will 6 & 7, I can't think of a better age for them to enjoy both of these.....:cool1:

Is there a projected time frame for when Disney would officially announce major expansions like these?

Depends on the scope. But it is a five-year effort (according to the sources), Cars isn't going anywhere and should answer the complaint that Disney never does anything for boys, and not only is Star Wars a premium franchise in its own right, there's a lot of movie cross-promotion to do.

Plus, if this can essentially expand capacity at DHS (and make it a full-day destination), it's that many more guests they can accommodate in WDW as a whole and might add a day to a large number of on-site reservations.
