what is that exactly?? I assumed it was when they opened the park.. aside from getting on rides faster what are the other benefits of that?

we have never made it to the parks before 11 or so... its a vacation so often we sleep in...

What are we missing by not attending a rope drop???

Yes, rope drop is when they open the parks. The benefits are:

1) Avoiding the crowds and being able to get the headliners done early without long lines.

2) Avoid the het of mid afternoon during the warmer times. We usually hit the pool or WP in the afternoon.

3) Most days you get some sort of presentation at MK for the opening.

It is basically a way to tour the parks with shorter lines and the benefits of having to navigate the parks before they get really busy. If you go in a slower time, it may not matter as much. On days when the crowds are expected to be a 7 or above, it is critical if you want to avoid long lines.

arriving for rd we did more in the first hour and a half than you could do in three hours if you get there later. its amazing

ohhh have neveer seen that... perhaps i can try to convince my family to get up early just one day.... and make rope drop...

but then comes the question to watch opening ceremonies or run as fast as we can to Space mountain....

ahhh even more choices...

You may not have to sprint to Space Mountain if you make it to RD. You may be able to watch the opening ceremony and then make it to Space Mtn before big lines form. Depends on when you are visiting. :)

my son has ODD, ADHD, and aspergers. So we qualify for the quest with disabilities pass, which was a god send and made our last trip so magical that we are going back this year.

No one can know the pure Joy a parent has of a child with aspergers and ODD wear a smile 2 miles wide cause he can ride Space mountain over and over....

Last year we rode it at least 20 times in 1 day. It was pretty much all my son and I did, while mom and DD toured the park and did other rides... lol me and son just kept going through Space mountain. He still talks about it almost daily, and keeps his ride photo on his night stand and tells his picture all the time that he is coming back and he is gonna ride it 50 times this year.

he has made a notebook already so that he can mark off each time he rides SM so he can reach his 50 ride goal... we are there for 2 weeks this time and I hope he reaches it..:)

we are going July 26 - Aug 8

My son has to take summer school he failed a standardized test, and has to pass this test in order to move on to next grade

Also to note, at MK (the only RD show left), they will open the "floodgates" at the end of the show. So no worries about choosing the show over getting to the ride :).

You are missing the point that Disney is not the vacation to take if the goal is sleeping late. You can do that for much less money like camping by a quiet lake in a national park. No we did that and the crows woke us up at 5. Ok so pretend you are at the lake and get your miserable carcass out of bed at 5 to get as much fun done in the parks as humanly possible before noon THEN sleep all afternoon so you can stay up really late for the same reason. This is top secret stuff so don't tell anyone else about it.

I love this post! My son also has autism and that feeling you have inside you, when your child is actually having pure enjoyment over something is priceless!! Those moments are so few for kids like ours!

Did you have that option to ride over and over again with all the rides or was that just special? We went to disney for the first time last year and used the guest pass, but did not have the same expereience. I k now it is different for everyone based on the specific medical needs but our son has many of the issues you listed above. Hopefully this sept. he will have the same option on one of his favorite rides. If not, no biggie, the card definitely makes things much easier for kids like ours.

I hope you and your family have another wonderful year at disney and your son is able to reach his goal! pixiedust:

I prolly should have added that it was EMH at MK, and we got most of those rides in those extra 2 hours. And this was the only one we rode repeatedly. you find something that works and stick with it..:)

And you are right, my son barely ever smiles, hardly shows enjoyment, so to see him so happy and laughing and squealing in excitement made my heart so happy. In fact so happy that we are going back this year.

I know people frown on folks that use the GAC, but i am of the mindset, that they dont know my son, they dont know that every year he is voted most quietest child at school, and the least likely to smile, and that he has suicidal thoughts at the age of 9. He is trapped in his own mind. And if I can help him wear a perma grin by golly i am gonna do it!!!

this is what my son looked like in 90% of our photos..

And this is my son on SM

We go at Rope drop at MK one morning just because of the show is neat to watch, but I like going to EMH on MK morning because we can do so much before noon!!!!

. :thumbsup2

i agree. My soni is 12 and the challenges he faces just to get through a day are heartbreaking. He also has been talking of suicide since he was 8. He just was recently hospitalized because he could no longer handle the challenges he has as a person with autism. I could go on as I am sure you could as well. Which is why I also agree that while there are many posts frowning upon the assistance our children recieve through the use of the GaC, I still use it. If only they lived a day in our childs life they would understand. I am just thankful to Disney for the assistance they provide and the joy that they bring to our children and others like them!
