Horses at Fort Wilderness

Has anyone ever rode the horses at Fort Wilderness? If so, was it fun? Do you go on paths or just in a small fenced area? Would a 7 year old be able to do it? Finally, did you book in advance or know if that is necessary?

We are looking for options outside of the norm to add some new magic to our trip.:wizard: Open to other suggestions too. :)

Well darn, just found my own answer. Looks like kids can do a short pony ride but the guided tours you have to be 9 and older. Oh well, in a few years or maybe we will bring the little guy and let him do the pony ride anyways.
Off to find another activity...

we are trying archery at fw this time, age is 7 and up. never heard of it until reading about it on here a few weeks ago.

did the pony rides a few years ago, they were nice. then we walked thru the stables and saw cinderella's horses. it was a nice way to use up alittle extra time we had.

To Op,
The pony rides are wonderful!! My dd did them every trip when she was 6or7!
The ponies were so cute and fuzzy, with names like Tonka, Oreo, and Cinnamon.
This was 10 -11 years ago, so they may have retired these ponies, but I am sure your child would enjoy it! I believe there is a weight limit too, though can't remember if it is 50 or 80 lbs.
Trail rides are really fun too, when your child is older, Horses are very sweet and docile. Make sure you visit the horse barn at Fort Wilderness. Horses are gorgeous!

What are the hours for the Horse Barn?

My DD13 is currently horse crazy and I think she would love to walk through the barn. She has told me she has no interest in riding a horse though.

We've got a Hoop Dee Doo reservervation so it would be cool if we could combine that with a walk through the barn.

Thanks!

Subscribing! My youngest isn't old enough to do the horse trail ride yet, but it won't be much longer.

Thanks for the comments and information. I think we will check this out one day as a change n pace/scenery. :goodvibes

I haven't heard of the archery before. Thanks for mentioning it. We might have to check it out too.

On the same note as the stables, do you have to be a resort guest of WL to walk through? Also just heard on the podcast of WL that the best time to go see them is feeding time, when is feeding time?

You don't have to be a WDW resort guest to do anything at FW. Parking is a bit of a pain if you drive your own car, since you'll need to transfer to an internal FW Bus. WL is a resort in the same neighborhood, about a 15 minute walk or short boat ride away. Because they both have Wilderness in the name people confuse the two.

We have seen the barns near the marina and pony rides open from very early in the morning until the evening. I am not sure of exact hours though. We walked through before HDDR as well. It is fun to go through there at different times during the day and you might see them working with the horses, like horseshoeing.

Just for completeness, the full size horse trail rides leave from the South end of Fort Wilderness, the "Outpost Depot" which is near where you park if you drive in. The Ponies and barns to walk through are at the North end, about a mile away at the "Settlement Depot" which is right near the marina. Any of the internal FW buses will run between these two destinations. Boats from MK go right to the marina, and there are also boats from WL or CR.
