Now looking at August and Moderates

Hey my fellow planners. I confirmed with the school board yesterday that pulling my two high schoolers for a week in October 2014 is NOT an option . But since I do want them to pass high school and go on to college I am moving our dates. We are now looking at August 14 - August 23, not looking forward to the heat, but I am adding the water parks to our plans.

When we were looking at the comfortable temps of Ocotber I was looking at 2 rooms at POP, now that we are looking at melting in August I am looking for 2 rooms at a moderate, and praying there will be a discount for either rooms or dining like there has been historically.

Can anyone help with recommendations for moderates including the Ft. Wilderness Cabins? It will be me (39), my so (39), ds (18), dd (17), ds (14), and ds (6). We are not interested at this time in renting DVC points. Having a big kitchen isn't really important . My SO does not live with me, I'm a single mom 90% of the time and really don't want to see a kitchen. We would put the oldest three in one room and keep the 6yo with us.

Thanks for any help. Hoping to book as soon as the 2014 packages are released.

You might want to move your date. The first summer promo gives discounts through August 14. The second summer promo begins August 15. If you use both, you have to check in and out. My dates ended the 15th and we elected just to pay full price for one night rather than the hassle. Just wanted you to be aware of that.

Also, we are off season veterans. Last year I went in June and thought I was going to die. August should be interesting. Although I have not stayed there, I would look hard at the cabins because it is closer to the parks. You can get back to the hotel faster, if you want to cool off.

I stayed at Riverside (when it was Dixie Landings) and I loved it.

That may be a very busy week, since a lot of schools (in DE) go back around the 23rd.

August is a busy vacation month as it is anyway, anywhere you go.

Like the pp said, there is a discount already for the time period you are going. Now as far as resort choice, I'm sure you'll get many different opinions but our favorite in the MOD category is Coronado Springs. I too have two teens (both girls) and they much prefer the decor/theming of CSR over the others. The main pool, IMHO, is the 2nd best pool next to SAB at the BC. CSR has a few different booking categories and if it's in your budget, I'd say to look at the Business Class option. This guarantees you to be in the Cabanas section which is closest to both the main pool and the main building. It will also give you access to the lounge (like a club level light) where you can get breakfast foods (continental style), drinks and snacks (including some alcoholic beverages in the evening). I feel your pain as far as moving to August from the Fall. Last year we had to make the switch as my oldest was starting college and my youngest high school so there was no way we could do a Fall trip. We were there the 2nd week in August of last year and I will tell you that, yes, it is HOT! I think what really saved us was that we went into it expecting the heat to be completely unbearable and so we prepared by changing our touring style and hitting the parks early, going back to the resort for pool/downtime during the day & hitting the parks at night and honestly, we had a great trip. We also went to our local Target & bought these mini Coleman fans which you can carry in your pocket and they turned out to be a godsend especially when waiting for a ride. Hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Edit: Also wanted to add that we expected the crowds to be insane and we were very pleasantly surprised but that too....it wasn't bad at all!

It will be extremely hard to predict when the discount will actually end since you are talking about a year away 2014. I would just be open to change since the days may be different for next years discounts (assuming there is one). As long as you are okay with moving your vacation days to coincide with the discount available you should be okay. If you are absolutely set on specific days then you may not be able to get a discount.

While I love planning ahead, I hate not knowing what will be available.
Heck, we are trying to plan for a trip this Dec and really can't do much until we know what kind of discount is available. So we are just planning on rack rates and going from there.

BTW August is hot! We are going the first week this year. But we have been several times before in August. Temps over 100* alot of the times. And we are from the midwest so are used to those temps. But it is still HOT!
Have Fun!

So right, I didn't catch that the OP meant in 2014!

The Ft. Wilderness Cabins are probably your cheapest option. They sleep 6 (double bed and bunk beds in the bedroom, Murphy bed (double) in the other room), at any of the other Mods you will need two rooms.

We stayed there back in 1990 (they were called trailers then) and really enjoyed it.

Since you aren't going until 2014 there is no way to know what discounts may or may not be available then.

We are thinking of going the 3rd week in August and plan on buying some of those misting fans to keep a little cooler. We have been several times during labor day week in September which I would think it would have about the same weather considering it is only a couple of weeks apart. We never did buy the misting fans because we never thought of it until we were in the parks and they cost 20.00 or more cant remember the exact price. That was to high in my opinion we would rather suffer :rotfl: It helps to reserve some table service meals in the parks in the middle of the day to refresh yourself from the heat. I remember getting my shower in the morning and heading out and be sweating before the bus came :sad2:. Other than that we had a lot of fun and would go again if my DGD wasnt showing in 4H labor day week.

August isn't that bad. There is a lot of places with A/C and it always gets cloudy in the afternoon and sometimes it rains which offers relief.

I would say go with POFQ. It is the smallest mod, and it is very quaint. It is also first on the POFQ/POR bus line. POR is also good and has rooms that have 2 queens and a daybed in the Alligator Bayou section. If you don't want to be walking a lot in the hot, humid August days, like we ended up doing, POFQ is your best choice. CSR, CBR, POR and FWC are way too big. We stayed at CSR and the size was terrible. We walked 20 minutes to the pool on those hot days. That's why we stick with deluxes, when we can. If not, then we would do POFQ.

This made me laugh! Hope you're not offended since I live in Delaware, too, but Delaware has such a small population out of the country that to think about Delaware schools having any affect on Disney just made me giggle! You're right about a lot of schools going back around that time though. :) Dover area schools seem to be going back about then--August 26 or 27.
