Dream or Magic

Booked a 4 night Bahama Cruise on the Dream for MLK weekend '14. Then I got wind that the Magic was getting several updates (including the ever-so-important aqua duck & the avengers area, my youngest is a HUGE super hero fan!!!) Magic will be about $1000 cheaper and it would be pretty easy to switch dates, as the Magic departs on Monday vs. Sunday. This will be our first Disney Cruise...so unsure if the Dream is worth the extra money or if we should go for Magic since we'll save money! Pros? Cons? Thoughts???

Is it the same # of days? Same port? I'd go with the longer cuise. I've never been on the Magic but look forward to it when our daughter is a bit older. I have a toddler so we love Nemo/Lab for her and have been on Dream and rebooked for Fantasy.

its not an aqua duck, its called, I believe, the aqua dunk. it is a lot different than the duck and I would wonder if there are different restrictions on it. you may want to check it out if the aqua duck is an important piece of the picture.

the Magic!!! ( we loved the Fantasy, did not like the Dream)

7days is better than 4 days!! :)

I'm planning to book a cruise for myself for Winter Break while we're on board, and right now I'm going with the Dream even though that's the ship we'll be on. It's a tad less expensive (or I can get a better category for about the same price), and I don't have to worry about escaping the Brazilian-themed restaurant (I know I'm in the minority, but I cannot stand Brazilian ANYTHING). Plus it would give me more time to explore the ship as we're only on a three-night this summer.

I'm sure my sister would say "Wonder out of Miami!!" as she loves that ship (probably because it was her first DCL cruise) and her second choice would be "Magic!" but we'll see. If she calls on one of their PC days I'll talk with her more so I can think about it. (I also have to consider that usually airfare to MCO is MUCH better than MIA. And I don't have to stress over a nightmare taxi ride in Miami!!)

I posted this to another poster's question about this decision:

I switched from Dream to Magic in Feb 2014. Here is why:

I didn't like the Aquaduck enough after doing it once right at the beginning of our last Dream cruise to stand in line for an hour to do it, and it was broken down a lot.

the new AquaDunk looks fabulous and line preventative as it's such a quick ride! And I am short so I can ride on the Twist and Spout as an adult (up to 5'4") - wicked cool!

I really really felt the crowds of the Dream in the dining rooms, except in Animator's. I absolutely loved Animators on the Dream!

The cool things I loved about Animators is coming to the Magic plus the new enhancements that the Fantasy has!

I really hated the pools on the Dream - why oh why can't they have made them bigger for the bigger crowds! What were they thinking?!

How flippin cool does the AquaLab family area look?! Really cool!

Dream had the most fabulous kids clubs imaginable!!! Really they are amazing! And Detective was so awesome!

BUT my 11yo son lives and dies for the Avengers and Iron Man - he is psyched!!!! Avengers Academy! (Hope it doesn't interfere with anything else that day!)

Castaway Cay doesn't grow in size when the big ships dock! It really does get crowded and hectic there with the bigger ships docked. But I didn't have any problems getting a space where we loved even with the bigger crowds. So I would say this isn't that big of an issue, but....

smaller ships at CC make for a more pleasant day all around at the place I like to refer to as Heaven on Earth

I am a big fan of the Rainforest Room and an even bigger fan of the exotic Rasul on the Magic - the Dream's rainforest area was always packed and no exotic rasul room as far as I am aware. But I was newly divorced for my Dream cruise, so maybe it existed, but I just didn't do it.

Brand spankin new spa area on the Magic to check out (please Disney keep the Exotic Rasul!!!! PLEASE! I have an amazing boyfriend now and really want to show him this "treatment" )

I have to say that everything about picking up your pictures sucked on the Dream and took so much of your time up to do it, but when I cruised it was the beginning of the new system and they didn't have them working yet, so you still had to find your photos and stand in line to purchase them.

Re-booking on the Dream was a nightmare of lines all the time - from the first day to the last!

less crowds on Magic when getting your pictures and re-booking and for characters meetings and for shows and for... well, you get the picture

So there is a smidgin of why I chose to change back to the Magic. I am wicked psyched!!!

oh and by the way, I really didn't like the food on the Dream (except Remy was amazing beyond words!!!), but love it on the Magic - so this is very subjective and may have been because it was a nightmare of crowds, pace, craziness for our servers each time we ate in the dining rooms so I may have been at the end of my rope each night too. My server ended up being our server from a Magic cruise and he was so excited at first to go over to the Dream but then he told us he wanted to go back so badly because it's so hard to deal with the crowds in the dining room every night and you don't get to know your passengers as well.

THANK YOU everyone for your responses! Now I've got lots to think about!!! :-) I think we are leaning towards the switch and saving the money! The only thing that does look tons better are the staterooms - we are a family of 5, but how much time will we actually spend in our rooms? I'm guessing not much???

I'd like to bump this for some more feedback.

I cruised the Dream a few weeks ago and rebooked for next May. Now I'm considering trying the Magic out based solely on the size. What will I miss from the Dream? Aquaduck? Been there, done that. What else?

Miss from the Dream? I say nothing! Wait - maybe you'll miss the crowds LOL. Seriously, the Magic is incredible and she'll be redesigned and even better. The pool deck is going to be improved and IMHO, the AquaDunk will be much better (to us, the AquaDuck is 'meh' because we are used to the awesomeness of Crush n' Gusher at Typhoon Lagoon). There will be a new restaurant to try, plus the Magic is also getting Cabanas. I like the set up of the adult areas on the Magic as well :)

The Magic is amazing and my 6 year old can't wait to go back to her in Oct either!!

Ok, maybe I'm just stupid, but the Magic is a smaller ship, so obviously holds less people...but that means the dining rooms and everything else is still designed for the maximum potential number of guests, right? So if she's full, how does she not feel crowded? I really don't get it.

Because of traffic flow/design etc.

Honestly the areas on the Dream did not increase in size in proportion to the number of guests

The dining rooms are huge and loud. The tables are close together. Yes, they can fit the people but you do feel it when the ship is full or bear capacity. This is a non-issue on the Classics IMHO.

Size does matter. We always pick the smaller ship. I can't explain it, but we've been on cruise ships with capacities of 300 to 5000 and even though the 5000 ones have just as much space per person, it always seems on the larger ships like you are on a subway at 5:00pm on a Friday.

Also, on ships with fewer people, you tend to run into people you meet more often and then get to know them better. On large ships, we can go an entire week and never see the same person twice, excepting my family, of course. Hmmmm, maybe next time I'll go on the Magic and put them on the Dream.

We are taking our first cruise in Feb '14. Trying to decide between Magic and Dream. It will save us enough money to go with the Magic and get to go to WDW for 2 days. We just don't want to be disappointed if this ship doesn't have as much to offer. It's just my husband and I. Anyone know if staterooms are being redesigned like the dream? Especially the magic porthole?

(I know I'm in the minority, but I cannot stand Brazilian ANYTHING).

I truly hope you don't include people in that "Anything". No, I am not Brazilian, but can't fathom not liking "ANYTHING" about a place. I can't even fathom knowing everything about a place, which is needed to form an opinion about "anything".

Redesigned in that they will get the new beds and linens, yes. The staterooms on the Magic already have a little more space across the board than the Dream.

No magic portholes will be added. I think the explanation was they are cost prohibitive to retrofit.
