Week at Walt Disney World? More Like Weekend at Bernie's: A July '12 TR COMPLETE 5/23

JULY 12TH PART THREE: Our Last Night
Like (almost) always, we spent our last night in the Magic Kingdom.

As you can see, the sky was mighty ominous.

It made for some cool pictures though.

Dream Along with Mickey! Thankfully we missed the “Join the party! A castle party!” song otherwise it would’ve gotten stuck in my head and I would have driven everyone else insane by singing it over and over again.

Snow White’s dress is my favorite because it has a cape. That makes it way better than all the others. Can capes be a thing again? I want one. I know the Incredibles warns against them, but it’s not like I’m out saving the world or anything. Just watching too much Netflix and worrying about my student loans.

We decided to grab some dinner at Pinocchio Village Haus.

They now serve flatbread pizza instead of the usual Disney pizza. I had to try one.

It was just OK. I’m not really a fan of Disney pizza (too much doughy crust) so I preferred this to that, but it wasn’t anything mindblowing.

After dinner, Dad and I went to grab Fastpasses for Space Mountain while Mom and Katie rode the Haunted Mansion. We wanted FP for after Wishes, so we had to sit there awhile waiting for the right window to open. The one time we needed a swarm of people or a giant tour group or something, there wasn’t one. Of course.

We got the FP and met up with Mom and Katie at the Laugh Floor just as the downpour began. Thanks to the rain, a lot of people followed suit.

As more and more rain fell, stuff started bubbling up through the drainage grates.

It was weird and foamy.

I was tempted to just stand there and watch it bubble up, but we had to keep moving. The portal to Monstropolis was waiting.

In the monster world, you can buy a snack that’s just sugar, salt, and fat. That’s the name. They don’t even try to make it sound healthy. This is my kind of place.

Monsters are clearly smarter than us. They have this whole green energy thing down pat.

They even eat all the garbage! Why can’t we be this efficient???

During the show, Buddy Boil had quite the memorable interaction with a woman in the audience. Buddy fired off a series of simple Yes/No questions and she responded. Only she didn’t speak English, so her family was quietly prompting her how to answer. Buddy didn’t realize this until he asked a question that required a more complicated response. When she didn’t respond and he figured out what was going on, he lost it. “WE’VE BEEN TALKING FOR THREE AND A HALF MINUTES AND YOU DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND ENGLISH?” It was funny. I realize this probably doesn't sound at all amusing, but you had to be there. Unfortunately, "You had to be there" doesn't translate well to TR.

After that, we left tomorrow behind in favor of a turn of the century small town. We walked through the Emporium (which was an overcrowded mess with wet floors from the rain) and then decided to find a spot for the parade in Town Square.

While we were waiting, I was struck by the sudden inspiration to go get a “homemade” ice cream sandwich from the Main Street Bakery. It’s something I’ve always said I need to do, but never have. So this was it. The moment had arrived. Off to the Bakery I went. Because everyone was in line at the Ice Cream Parlor, there was no wait. Score.

Here’s the half-eaten final product.

There’s a sugar cookie with sprinkles on top and chocolate chip on bottom. I couldn’t decide, so why not both? It was huge and I couldn’t finish it, but it was very good. I can see (taste?) why they’re so highly recommended. I’m glad I got to try one when I did because who knows if they’ll be back when the Bakery+Starbucks reopens.

As the pavement dried, fun shapes started to appear. We passed the time by playing Rorschach Test.

We think that one looks like Donald Duck.

Before long it was time for the Main Street Electrical Parade.

MSEP is, as I say in every TR, something I feel super “meh” about. I watch it because that’s what we always do and it would be weird not to watch, but still. I never connected to it the way I did with SpectroMagic. Spectro makes me cry. MSEP makes me go “Oh, that’s nice, I guess.”

Anyway, here’s a bunch of pictures.

JULY 12TH PART FOUR: Our Last Night 2: Electric Boogaloo
For a parade we’re whatever about, Dad and I sure took a lot of pictures. The horribly grainy ones are mine. I should really learn how to use my camera. :rotfl:

DANCING MICE!

349.jpg

I want a ball gown that lights up! Somebody get me a ball gown that lights up! It would be so fabulously tacky to wear in public.

351.jpg

DSCN6475.jpg

DSCN6477.jpg

Never mind about the ball gown. I want the light up version of Snow White’s cape dress.

354.jpg

I love the dwarfs’ glittery pickaxes.

357.jpg

359.jpg

Pete’s Dragon(whatever its name is)’s eyes are super creepy.

DSCN6490.jpg

It cracks me up how both MSEP and the Electrical Water Pageant conclude with “America is awesome. The end.”

After the parade passed through, everyone shuffled around for the fireworks. We wound up standing right by the flag pole.

364.jpg

Look at all the tour group flags on Main Street. Terrifying.

369.jpg

Before Wishes, we got to open up our hearts and let the memories begin one last time with The Magic, The Memories, and You. In the fall, it was replaced with Celebrate the Magic which is basically the same thing but also different. :thumbsup2

378.jpg

Hakuna Matata. On the Castle. Could it get any cooler?

384.jpg

I love the start-as-projections-end-as-the-real-thing fireworks.

Between MM&Y and Wishes, Mom had me cracking up. I don’t even remember what she was talking about, but I know it was hilarious. I came mighty close to dropping to the ground and ROTCOMS-ing. In case you don’t know (and you probably don’t because Lia and I are the only ones who use it), ROTCOMS stands for “Rolling on the concrete on Main Street” in a ROTFL kind of way.

Anyway, I pulled myself together in time for Wishes. And then I fell back apart while watching Wishes. Last night in WDW + this soundtrack = feelings.

After the show, we headed for Space Mountain.

This was a challenge on account of the fact that we were the only ones going in that direction. It required some serious swimming upstream. We were all laughing and, again, I came close to stopping in the middle of the street to ROTCOMS.

Once we made it through the hub, things got better. The feeling of going from sardine to wide open spaces is one of the best.

411.jpg

So anyway, we used our FPs and rode Space.

Even though it’s probably unnecessary, I always take my glasses off on this ride. I doubt they’d fly off, but better safe than blind for the rest of the vacation.

That came back to bite me this time because something flew into my eye right as we took off. I don’t know if it was a bug or a piece of dust or what, but my eye started to sting and water like crazy. I couldn’t open it. It was not pleasant.

It happened at the worst possible time too. Making stupid faces for Space’s on-ride photo is our thing and I was too busy yelling “AHHH MY EYE!!!” to choose a stupid face.

Then it dawned on me that nothing could be stupider than the look on my face at that moment. Obviously I couldn’t see myself, but, considering I had one eye glued shut, I just knew it had to be good.

So I gave the camera my best “WHAT THE HECK IS HAPPENING?” face.

My assumption was correct. It was good.

DSCN6497.jpg

I’m in pain/confused, Katie is laughing at me, and Mom’s just posing. :rotfl2:

Probably my favorite ride photo ever. Lemons into lemonade. Yada yada yada.

After that, we headed for the exit. We wanted to get out before the second MSEP clogged everything up. Plus that ride on Space Mountain had us all in a great mood (though my eye was still stinging a bit) and felt like the right time to call it a night (and a trip).

While strolling down Main Street, I had my usual OH MY GOSH THE BUILDINGS ARE LIT UP AND I’M FILLED WITH WARM FUZZIES AND THIS IS PERFECT AND OH GOD IT’S GOING TO START RAINING ON MY FACE ISN’T IT moment. I love that.

We took the bus back to POFQ, made one final late night mug refill run, watched some Stacey, and hit the hay.

Only one update left, you guys. I'll post it in the coming days and then it's on to the November trip. Yay! :santa:

Ooh-kay. So, I'm sorry that you had something fly into your eye while zooming through space and all, but Kara. I just laughed so hard that my cat gave The Look. Whatever cat, that Kara writes some funny stuff, deal with it.

I *love* it when Buddy Boil picks someone who doesn't speak English. We had it happen to us once too. It is literally the funniest thing I've ever seen.

And CAPES! OMG! Capes should totally be a thing. The Duchess (Kate Middleton) needs to wear one and then they'll be a thing.

OMG that is Donald Duck!!

I have a connection to both night-time parades; MSEP from my childhood and Spectro as an adult. So, I believe that I am completely qualified to give the final judgement that Spectro is indeed the better parade. MSEP is good, but Spectro gets into my soul. Sadly, I was told that it would absolutely NOT be returning when I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour a few weeks ago. Of course, she could have been lying. Here's hoping.

November TR... :yay: is right!

Hahaha Tell your cat that I apologize for making you laugh.

Yes! I think I'll write a letter to Kate. In a few months, she can use her cape to shield her baby from the paparazzi. It'll be perfect.
Ride photo = priceless. No other words for it! :rotfl:
Right? That photo was the perfect thing to cap off this trip.
Love all your pics! :)
Thanks!

Yeah, I read somewhere that some of the Spectro floats had been damaged in storage and that's why it's not coming back which is a bummer. Since fixing it is apparently not an option, I think it's time for an all new nighttime parade. Bringing MSEP back was cool for a brief nostalgia thing, but they could do so much more. We already have the Electrical Water Pageant if we want to see 70s technology in action and there are 30 years of now-classic Disney films that aren't represented in MSEP. Do kids these days even know what Pete's Dragon is? I'm almost 23 and I've never seen it. :rotfl:

I AM CAUGHT UP. REPEAT, I AM CAUGHT UP. Getting your teeth yanked out sure frees up your schedule. Oh how I have missed your humor. It's so refreshing.

Aw, I hope the tooth removal wasn't too terrible, but YAY for freeing up your schedule. :rotfl: And thank you for the compliment, my frumpy friend!

JULY 13TH PART ONE: The End
It was a Friday. It was the 13th. We were leaving Disney.

I now understand why Friday the 13th is so terrifying.

We woke up at the usual make-it-to-a-park-for-rope-drop time except we weren’t going to a park. We were packing up and heading home.

Blah. I hate leaving Disney. I hate writing about leaving Disney. There’s no way to make leaving Disney sound fun and entertaining. Only sad.

It took us a few hours to get ready, pack up everything, and load the car. After a week of the four of us living in it, the room was a mess. There was stuff everywhere. The nice thing about driving, though, is that we don’t have to worry about packing in any sort of orderly fashion. Our suitcases don’t have to be a certain weight. Heck, our stuff doesn’t even have to go in our suitcases. It just has to go in the car. The car basically becomes one giant suitcase that we also have to sit in for 16ish hours.

Anyway, we packed up, checked out, and said goodbye to French Quarter. OH THE SAD!

Before hitting the road for real, we stopped at Downtown Disney.

Dumbo!

I had never been at DTD this early. It was so empty. Felt weird.

The reason we stopped at Downtown Disney was breakfast. Mom and I saw the menu at Wolfgang Puck Express when we ate lunch there the day before and we knew we had to come.

Katie ordered the Belgian Waffle with fresh fruit, maple syrup, and whipped cream.

It looked delicious. So fresh.

Mom ordered the Spinach, Mushroom, and Cheese Omelet with potatoes.

Again, it looked really yummy.

I don’t have a picture, but Dad just ordered sides of scrambled eggs, bacon, and potatoes. He’s a simple guy when it comes to breakfast. Nothing fancy. Just the basics.

Finally, I ordered what has now become one my all-time favorite foods, the Smoked Bacon Breakfast Pizza!

This pizza changed my life. I would say JK, but I’m not kidding. As I was eating it, I felt my world being rocked. A mental earthquake, if you will. Then everything settled and life was good. I felt calm and ready (to an extent) to go home and return to my drama-filled, stressed out life. All because of breakfast pizza. :upsidedow

It has bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, two different kinds of cheese, and ranch dressing on it. It’s incredible. And it’s only $10 which is a steal for pizza + a mental earthquake. Therapy is a lot more expensive. Unfortunately the effects of breakfast pizza mental earthquakes wear off after about a week, so you should probably go with therapy. Do you think I could get insurance to cover meals at WPE for medical reasons? Hmm…

After breakfast, we swung by Goofy’s Candy Co. Katie needed to get a bag of the character gummy candies (she’s obsessed!) and since we were there, I got a few more Mickey Rice Krispy Treats to take home. If they’re sitting there in all their ears-dipped-in-chocolate glory, I can’t not buy a bunch. Come on.

With our treats purchased, we headed out for real this time. Like I said, there’s no way to make this sound anything other than super depressing, so I’m not even going to try. We left. We drove home. It was a bummer. The end.

Well, that’s it. I could wax poetic about the trip as a whole, but I’m really ready to move onto the next trip report, so I’ll just say that it was a great one. After 2011’s nightmare of a trip, this was much needed.

Thanks for reading/commenting/being awesome, gang! You're the best!

Now, for some holiday fun, come on over and join me HERE!!! :santa:

Ohhhh WPE, you never cease to amaze. Love love LOVE the pizza, and that omelette looks delish. I want WPE coverage on my medical insurance! Excellent idea.

The bad news is leaving Disney, but you make it funny and entertaining so it's not all bad.

The good news is leaving and heading back 4 months later and starting a brand new trip report!!

Loved this one... looking forward to the next!

Right? I need to contact my insurance company...

Exactly. :thumbsup2
Glad this trip made up for the year before

Can't wait to read your next TR!
Thank you!!!

Yeah! WPE's breakfast pizza is my favorite. I'm in south Florida for a wedding and I'm supposed to drive the 5 hours home tomorrow evening. I'm debating getting a room in Orlando partially just to have breakfast at WPE Sunday morning (I can't go to Disney for the day though as I have family from NC visiting).

Looking forward to reading about your holiday trip!

Joining in. I have a lot to catch up on. Currently I a enjoying all the food pics!
Welcome! And thanks!! :goodvibes

Nice. Breakfast at WPE (and not having to drive all the way) is worth it. ;)

This seemed like such a good trip. You got to do all the "must do's" and your family split up when different interests dictated. It seemed like a perfect family memory.

I love the animation class at Disney Studios and enjoyed seeing your (very talented!) drawings. I am going to make sure to do that more on my next vacation.

I am right there with you on your opinion of Midway Mania! I so love that ride!! And I would have congratulated you on your early arrival to the gate. I also use the early arrival strategy to make sure I get my fastpass and a short wait for my first Midway ride. It's the sensible thing to do!

That was so strange that Disney workers came to visit your toilet. A few years back, I went to a park and left up my "do not distrub sign" thinking that no one would enter while I was away. When I got back to my room they had come in a installed an ironing board. I guess some things just can't wait.

I wish I got to go home from Disney by car! I always feel very nervous and rushed while getting everything back into my suitcase and off to the airport. And you even got to go to dtd (and see it VERY uncrowded) before leaving Florida. I love dtd. I need a portal so that I can go there as often as possible.

I will keep an eye out for your new report updates. Thanks for shareing your trips.
