Is there a shuttle on the island, or do we have to walk on a path, or beach?

There is a shuttle that goes from where the ship docks all the way to the quiet beach, so it goes from one end to the other. Or there is a walking path with lots of picturesque sites that can only be enjoyed and captured while walking.

Just wanted to clarify that the shuttle comes near the boat, but you still need to walk a little way to get on it. Not a big deal, unless you are asking for someone who is disabled or would have trouble walking very far.

It's not really a shuttle, like a shuttle van would be. It's a tram. Like when you go to EPCOT or MK and they have a tram to take you to the parking lot. It's exactly like that, like a train of cars on wheels. My suggestion is to only load up close to the driver. They took off while my (getting older) parents were trying to board on the back and my dad jumped off so that mom wouldn't be left behind and was very sore the next day and complained about it for half a day until finally someone gave him a case number to track the incident. So be sure and load up close to the driver and the not the back until they hire more people to give the all clear when loading in the rear.

And it's just our experience, but the trams run pretty infrequently. We waited 15 minutes once. That may not sound like much, but we could have walked faster. And there's not an orderly system for boarding, as in first in line board first, so it's kind if a mad rush during busy times. Just be prepared and keep an eye on kids, elderly passengers, etc so that they aren't left behind. (All our experiences were on the larger ships, so it may be less chaotic on the classics)

As noted the shuttle does not stop directly next to the ship, you have to walk a little to get to it. And it only goes to the Pelican Plunge beach. You transfer there to a different tram to go to Serenity Bay.

We brought our own. There was some for sale at the shops. I believe the scuttles cove kids club had sand toys. I also believe cabanas get some. The family beach area does not have sand toys.

I emailed DCL about beach balls and was told sorry, beach balls are not allowed.

Regarding the walk from the ship to the shuttle...my mother had difficulty walking distances. Guest Services offered to meet her at the gangplank with a golf cart to take her to the shuttle stop. That was definitely "above and beyond" in my book!

I heard that there was para sailing on Castaway Cay, but I don't see any excursions for it on the web site. Does anyone have any info on this?

Are there beach toys available for kids to use on the beach, or do we have to bring our own?

Since I don't have a "photo bucket" account and can't post just a few pics..I'll be a pain and post the links to my Castaway videos.. ((so sorry))
but if you have a few minutes to watch, they do show the walkways to Castaway and the inflatables that you can RENT at Castaway. There are several areas to do this, and if you pause the second link (video-part seven) at the very beginning, you can see a rental area and the wake boards etc. that they do have there. I believe the rental was about $10.00 or so for the ring my son got, the life jacket was free with the rental.

It is quite a hike from the ship to the beach area so be prepared or patient and wait for the tram. You can also check it out on Google Maps...just put in Castaway Cay There are lots of great little pics on there too

We did see the tram running fairly often on our visit to Castaway. We actually waited in the line (about 10 minutes near the end of the day) and rode it going back to the ship because we were hot and tired. The person at that time who was driving was standing outside/walking up and down the tram looking, counting and checking that it was full and everyone was on before he took off. This was only our specific experience and as it has been posted earlier this does not apparently always happen.
