Just Back : Attack of the Flies!!!

I am always telling people that it constantly amazes me how there is such a low amount of bugs to be seen at Disney. Sometimes, my family and I laugh and swear that there is a giant mesh dome that keeps them out. This sounds disgusting and I seriously hope they figure out where the source is.

Ugh, I hope this problem gets addressed soon.

I refuse to eat anywhere swarmed with flies.

My husband, a former pest exterminator, would be beyond pissed if he had to endure any of this on his vacation.

If I were onsite now and had to deal with this, I'd be cancelling all my ADRs, renting a car, and going off site to eat, and would bring off site food back to my room. Yuck.

I really don't think this is a WDW issue. I was in Orlando over the weekend and noticed the flies everywhere, and I did not step foot onto WDW property...

We arrive this Sunday and I'm concerned about this. Any suggestions for how to deal with the flies? Obviously, we won't try to eat outside. HELP!

I would have too if I had seen the dining area before we got our food. They weren't letting anyone go back there until after they had trays of food. Once in the dining area, the flies were obvious. Even worse when they led us out the door on the other side. :scared1:

I didn't notice any flies at all in the ordering area, even standing in line for quite awhile. They must have had some prevention in that area.

Yea I mean we ate in Pecos Bill on Wednesday and they were all over. I didn't notice them too much on Monday at EPCOT. Only inside the Electric Umbrella (which is nothing new). But we drank around the world and I don't recall seeing flies, but I also wasn't in the mindframe where flies would have bugged me lmao.

So weird. We were at MK for Merida's coronation on Saturday and then hopped to AK for the rest of the day. We didn't notice any flies at all. Certainly nothing like what's being described. We did not eat at any of the restaurants but we did sit in the shade and eat our snacks and stand in several queues with no issues. I hope they solve whatever this is soon!

A couple of things: NOT just a WDW issue, don't know what is going on but last week I was in Winter Garden, (not near WDW for those not from FL) Lakeland (about 40 miles away) and in Downtown Orlando (again not anywhere near WDW) major small--think size of house flies...bigger than fruit flies not nearly as big as horse flies EVERYWHERE !

I live about 32 miles away and have a horse NO issue (and believe me we have manure) I don't get it :confused3 but not happy either as I am finally going to WDW this weekend after months..just our luck

I was there last week and it was out of control - we were literally driven away from the pool at AKL by them. At the pool bar the bartender had to make my drink THREE times because the first two attempts got flies in the before she could even bring it to me - everyone was putting napkins on their drinks with a hole for the straw just to keep them out. We tried to sunbathe but it was impossible to relax with swarms of flies landing on you the minute you stayed still. When I felt them crawling on me and opened my eyes to count TEN flies walking on me at once, I was done!!

We are here now and they are a huge issue. DS is terrified of all bugs, and every time we come out of a ride or show his stroller is covered in bugs, so he freaks out. We can't stop to eat anywhere because even walking with a pretzel in the MK we had flies on our food. It's repulsive. My DH and I were just talking a out how bad it is, and how we have never seen it like this, and then I saw this thread. I hope they go away soon! For anyone that has tried, does bug spray help? Any particular kind? I have to do something for DS, we are here for 8 more days and I hate to think of it ruining his first SWW!

I am freaking out because our trip is at the beginning of June and my 4 year old DD is terrified of flying insects. I already told her that Disney does a greaf job of keeping the insect population under control. It sounds like this isn't just a WDW problem but this may ruin our trip. Of course I have been calmly reminding her they can't hurt her, letting bugs crawl on me, getting bug books at the library- anything to help get her over this fear. But these swarms of flies may send her over the edge. I hope if is under control soon! I know it isn't just a WDW problem.

We also noticed way fewer at Epcot. There were a couple of places they were thicker, but nothing like MK. Mostly just a solo fly stalking drinks or food that were being carried.

This is the most bizarre part of it. Many places in MK were seemingly fly free. They are concentrated in certain areas. If you would have entered one of those areas, you would have known it. The further away we got from a big swarm, the less we saw. Then we would see none until we stumbled upon the next swarm.

Definitively not evenly distributed as you would think flies should be. Another fact that leads one to believe there is an attractant.

We were there 5/1-5/7 and when it wasn't pouring we had flies everywhere! They were all around the pool at WL.....all over the buffet at CP and really bad at AK.

That is horrible!! I don't think we have ever been when there has been flies everywhere. We will be there May 22nd.

It's typically unusual to have flies around here, and I've seen a few where I live recently as well. We used to have them a lot when we lived in Pinellas county but we don't usually see them here. I'm about 20 minutes west of WDW. I don't know what's causing them, but I'd like them to go away.

I know I saw the fly issue mentioned in one of the Disney blogs and thought it strange. At first I thought of the love bugs which come out in May or the yellow flys that bite also out in May but seems not to be either of those.

May is normally a buggy time in FLorida but this latest infestation just sounds terrible

Just to reiterate what other posters have said, this is NOT just an issue at WDW. My wife was talking to her Sister last night who lives in Lakeland and she was complaining about the swarms of flies everywhere. They haven't been able to enjoy their patio for over a week. They were at Busch Gardens in Tampa over the weekend and they were bad there too.

I can't handle flies in food. It is so gross to me.

We ate at Mama Melrose in 2008 and there were flies in the pizza fixings. I couldn't eat at that meal and didn't enjoy it at all because of this.

My question: if it is that bad are the flies in the Pecos Bill fixings bar? It will gross me out.

:(
