Just Back : Attack of the Flies!!!

Just got back from a nice little vacation in WDW. Had a great time... Drinking Around the World was a success and made it around. Even finished that night at Raglan Road. One thing that was out of control were the flies. I'm not talking 'love bugs' but actual flies. They were all over the place, more so at MK but we encountered a lot in EPCOT and HS also. I don't recall a time seeing it this bad. It wasn't even all near the restaurants. The Haunted Mansion queue was full of them. They were even inside the Pirates queue. Anyone else notice this?

Yes! It was awful! I actually had an Off Bug Spray wipe in my bag that I used one day. It helped but they were still annoying.

Never have I seen that many flies.

Debbie

Definitely noticed it as well. We found that they were in the restaurants too. It's not pleasant trying to eat and having flies land on you. I wonder where they are all coming from, but we have never experienced something like this in the past.

Yes and double yes. We just left CSR this morning and the flies in the pool area yesterday were horrible. We also noticed them yesterday at Mousegears in Epcot.
We are locals and can always handle lovebugs but man the flies were horrible this past weekend.

Ok glad I'm not nuts here. Yea we live 2 hours west and are used to love bugs but these flies were out of control. There has to be a reason why. I didn't notice them really in DTD or our hotel which was across from DTD the Buena Vista Palace

Yes... We too just got back! Casey's splash area at MK was loaded with flies!! It was gross!! I was actually commenting to my husband how awful the flies were everywhere we went.... MK and POFQ food court!

Yea it's really weird how its confined to some of the parks and resorts. Was anyone in AK and had this problem. I could only imagine how bad that park could be.

We were at the MK on Saturday and the flies were everywhere, it was so nasty! I've never seen so many in one place.

I've been following a similar thread on another site... and it seems the "culprit" is Disney deciding to use their own, "man-made" mulch... which is mostly comprised of manure from the Animal Kingdom :faint:

Not sure if that's 100% true or not ... it's just the speculation I've read!

Ew, weird!! Well, if it was new mulch stuff, hopefully Disney learned their lesson.

Be sure to voice your discontent to WDW... I'm sure they'd appreciate the feedback!

Yuck.

Are they regular "houseflies" or the big ones with the green heads that bite or horseflies? Sounds completely gross either way.

We were at MK on Friday and wondered why there was a ton of them in gastons tavern. That must be why!

Hope you guys complain so they will be gone by my visit ;)

My DH loathes flies...I mean...loathes...so hope this is a fluke...and yes, mulch was the first thought that popped in my mind...who knows...

They look like small versions of house flies. Don't bite, just annoy. I've never seen so many flies in one place, its really weird.

Not just WDW - we hit Universal, Typhoon Lagoon, MK and IOA this past weekend... they were everywhere, though fewer of them at TL.

Hope they buzz off by July...don't want to share my Dole Whip with these gross creatures. :rotfl2:

OMG! we were there the 4-11th. We thought the love bugs were terrible at the beginning of the week and the flies were out of control at the end of the week! MK seemed to be the worst, we noticed an especially gross spot was the tables outside Caseys. We stood waiting for someone to leave, finally got a table and as soon as we sat down, we realized there was a huge food spill on the ground underneath the table (which had clearly been there for a while, was not the people who had just left). Well as soon as we moved chairs to sit the flies were literally swarming us. I was so grossed out, there was no way I could sit there and eat so we moved to a standing table a bit away and that was better. I was really surprised by the number of people eating there with the flies practically attacking you. I was looking for a cast member to tell (so the food could be cleaned up) but there were none in sight.

Hmmm, we just got back Tuesday and several times we commented "smells like poo". We thought mulch, fertilizer, etc but yep this would make sense.

You can not sit down anywhere in the parks, especially the Studio. These are even worse then the love bugs.

OMG!! Are you kidding me?! another brilliant idea ...NOT!! We are a family of 6 checking in June 3-7...SSR
I doubt the problem will be fixed by then.....
