Does anyone have an Avatarland update??

That is great! Thanks for the update! What an excellent plan! Can't wait for the next update. After all, that is why I am on this thread!

you mean your sole purpose on this thread is not to trash something you ve never seen or know no details while greatly expanding a park that desperately needs rides?

For everyone bringing up thenmoneythat Avatar made, that doesn't mean anything. Sure it made tons and tons of money at the box office, but what about merchandising and longevity? Do you really think if they rereleased Avatar today it would make any where near the amount of money it did originally? People went to see Avatar for the effects and because of the hype. It did not resonate with people the way other movies have. I am sure there are some rabid Avatar fans, but probably not as many as you think. It's a Wonderful Life was a FLOP when it was initially released, look at it now. I am pretty sure that if you re released those two movies at the same time, Its a Wonderful Life would outsell Avatar. Initial big box office doesn't mean as much as you seem to think it does.
Also, the Acadmey Award argument is just as silly. Cary Grant never recieved an Oscar for acting.
Hitchock never won. Ñiether has George Lucas. For movies, Forrest Gump won over Pulp fiction. Tell me that is not ridiculous. And, sure Avatar was nominated, but so was Working Girl.

For the sequels, sure they may be great. But since the original was not great, nor even good, I am not holding my breath. And very few sequels outshine the original (godfather II being the exception).

Avatar land may be cool and I am sure it will be visually stunning, but surely there is something else Disney could use as a spring board for a new land other than an over hyped, flash in the pan movie with no substance or staying power.

Two very important things have not happened yet.

1) Avatarland has not opened. It could have such phenomenal attractions that none of this argument will ever have mattered.

2) Avatar 2 hasn't opened yet. Sequels are probably the primary determinant of whether a franchise is vital and has staying power. Calling something a flash in the pan when there has been no opening weekend on a sequel to qualify it is a bit silly and juvenile.

Avatar was huge, which means that for as many people who loved it, there are just as many who hated it (a good portion of these specifically because too many people loved it).

I myself found it pretty amazing from a visual effects standpoint, and from the standpoint of crafting an alien ecosystem that seems to be so complete and functional. I thought the story/script was a bit lacking, and sometimes derivative (though they say there are only but so many stories...).

Avatarland is not my first choice for expanding DAK. That would be Beastly Kingdom. My second choice would be Australia. All that said, I will reserve judgement about what I think of Avatarland until after I get to tour it. I remain enthusiastic that they are expanding the park in any way, shape, or form.

read on magic that the main e ticket will be called Flight of Passage and that we are now looking at two rides plus other stuff...hopefully at d23 we get more details..maybe sooner
~This is AWESOME!!! I can't wait to read it! I don't have time now, but I'll look for this later. Thanks for the update! :cool1:

i normally dont start the avatar discussion just respond but i thought this was interesting (at least to me lol)

quick little anecdotal story for conjectures sake

my brother teaches middle school geography and was showing kids the huangshan mountains..immediately in every class the kids starting talking about "those mountains look like the floating mountains from avatar" every class said the same thing

i know its anecdotal but still gives you a since that avatar is not quite as forgotten as some on this board lead you to believe

Haunted mansion was a terrible movie it must be a terrible ride
Your analogy was broken right from the jump becasue the ride came before the movie. Further, many would argue that the movie was horrible because it was based on the ride.
Twilight zone is super cheezy TOT must be a bad ride
Many would argue that Twilight Zone is a classic that stood the test of time. Whether Avatar was a great movie or not is highly debateable, but has it become a classic? If they did nothing else with the franchise, would people still be watching this movie in twenty years? Thirty?

I wonder if you aren't thinking of 'Twilight Zone: The Movie'. It's true that the movie wasn't hugely successful, but the very fact that it was made is testament to the classic nature of Rod Serling's original series.
Cars was decent RSR must be average
Cars did pretty well at the box office, but has done super well in merchandising and has spawned a couple of sequels/spin offs as well as a number of short films.

~LOL, this is awesome! Thanks for so much sharing, twebber55! And, I have yet to see anything credible that supports this HUGE amount of Avatar haters. Absolutely nothing. I am so excited about Avatarland, can't wait! :cool1:

~Your analogy is interesting -- it hurts your argument and supports Avatarland, even more. Pirates of the Caribbean was spawned from the ride which was a HUGE success for Disney -- a great movie from a great ride. I don't recall any significant Twightlight Zone fandom -- anywhere, and it really doesn't matter anyway! And, how exactly has Twilight Zone stood the test of time??? The ride. :rotfl2: But again, none of this really matters to the potential success of Avatarland. At this point, you are simply grasping at straws. Basically, this just translates to yet another "I didn't like the movie" post and that's fine. I didn't like the movie either, but after reading your post I'm even more excited about Avatarland! Thanks so much, dadddio! :cool1:

Are you saying that Twilight Zone hasn't stood the test of time? Hmmm, why does Syfy do marathons of it on a regular basis? I am positive I don't know anyone who hasn't seen several episodes and doesn't have fond memories of it, I wasn't even alive when it was On tv originally. I bet if you ask people what show "wishing you to the cornfield" is from, or ask about the pig people episode or ask about the gremlin on the plane or the last man on earth with broken glasses or ask what kind of book "to serve man" is, people would know. I wouldn't even know what to ask about some iconic part of avatar would be, other than blue cat people. Try asking about that in 50 years. No way will anyone be watching Avatar in 50 years and remembering it the way they do TZ now.

so you may not know much about avatar but a lot do...it was a global phenomenon with two more movies to go..i could list all the stats i have posted in the past but that doesnt matter because people who dont like it for some reason want to dismiss facts

it all comes down to how WDI creates this land/ride it really has nothing to do with the movie

isnt lord mystic a big game hunter? i did like the ride but doesnt that go against everything DAK stands for?

everything i here is avatar IS coming so.....

Actually big game hunters were the first conservationist much like Teddy Roosevelt. It fits better than avatar

The theme of early exploration and adventure fits perfectly IMO

My post wasn't really a 'for or against' post giving my approval or disapproval of Avatarland. It was simply a comment on the earlier post regarding Twilight Zone, et al. That being said, I believe that the very last bit of my post was the most important thing regarding Avatar. That was that Cars was a no brainier to be added to the parks because it was hugely successful from a merchandising perspective. As near as I can tell, Avatar has been pretty much completely unsuccessful from a merchandising perspective. That's the biggest barrier, in my opinion.

I have never considered myself a Twilight Zone fan. It was before my time and I Mohave never made special effort to watch the episodes. Still, I got every one of your references. William Shatner and the gremlin on the plane is my favorite.

I don't know any of these things, and I'm 35yo. I know I have SyFy, but can honestly say the only time I've ever watched it was for wrestling a few years ago. I do know what Twilight Zone is, but never really watched it at all.

I still enjoy Tower of Terror.

Now, I have never seen Avatar either, but I'm sure I will be able to enjoy to new area.

i agree with a lot of what you are saying and i didnt know any of those sayings and im 40... but saying what will people remember in 50 years limits anything you do..if we did that we would only have star wars, LOTR, and HP

the fact is we dont know how popular anything will be in 20 years

Didn't say anything about killing animals. What I said was the original conservation movement was spearheaded by big game humters like Teddy Roosevelt.

The first zoos were built with thier money. Theme wise, that would fit in with DAK's theme. A homage if you will

But no, there needs to be no reference to killing animals.
