OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Anyone have any advice on the Hal Higdon novice program? I like that I can progress over 30 weeks, but the days of the week won't work for my long run and rest day. How much will it hurt if I switch up some of the schedule days? I've been running for about 8 months and I've completed 4 1/2 marathons since January. I believe I won't have a problem finishing a marathon if I train correctly. Any comments?

I used his Novice 2 program for the 2013 WDW Marathon - my first.

It seems like you are looking at the Novice Supreme. In my opinion, since you have already done 4 half marathons this year, is to do his Novice 1 or Novice 2 program instead. I had done no halfs when I started (I did two during the course of training) but was running about 20 miles/week, and I did fine. (Of course, I got the flu before the marathon and spent a few hours longer on the course than I had ever imagined, but I was trained and able to finish).

I switched mine up - he had short runs on Tuesday/Thursday, medium run on Wednesday, and long run on Saturday. I did - medium run on Monday, short run on Tuesday, short run on Wednesday, long run on Friday or Saturday.

Do you like it?

For what it is...yes, I like it. You put in your time in one distance and it calculates predictions for other distances. It also gives advice for training paces based on your times.
It doesn't do anything more but I like having it handy.

Been lurking on here for a bit. Dh started running a few months ago and has really started to get serious... so since he agreed to run a disney half, I let him decide which one he wanted. (it is his first so should be about him.. not me.) And while I was sure I would be doing the phm... and the gsc... He picked the WDW half in January instead. I didn't see a thread just for the half, so please excuse me if this isn't where I should be.

So even though I am a tad disappointed to not be doing the princess in 2014... I am actually VERY excited to be doing a different race. :cool1: If only I had all the money.. time... and energy in the world I would do both...

Bottom line though... we are all signed up!!! Good thing to since it is at 90%!!!

All WDW weekend racers are here, welcome! I am doing just the 10k, can't wait to see the bling!

First time marathoner here - done several other WDW Half Marathons and for some reason decided last weekend that it would be cool to do the Original.....well, Disney original, why not! I mean I can get a room at AKL and don't care about my time as long as I don't get swept.

So that was last weekend, now I'm starting to freak out a little. I know I can do this, just need leg to get well (takes me being patient) so I can start training in June/July.

Couple of questions for this group - please let me know if this is in the wrong place and I'll move it!

1) I've decided to Go Galloway just to keep injuries down, would you recommend the beginner or experienced runner training. I've run a Half in 2:45 before, but honestly thinking Galloway might make me faster. Was going to go with experienced (finishing upright) but wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.

2) It it nuts to mix in the ToT 10 Miler and another Half Marathon along the way, doesn't correlate 100%, but know I can make it work.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Personally, I would go with experienced if you have already completed a half marathon. I don't think it's crazy at all to add in a 10K and 1/2 into your training. Just line it up with the plan as close as possible. I'll be completing 4-5 1/2s and at least one additional full before Dopey in January.

Hi, all! I'm super excited to have the Disney World Half Marathon be my first Half Marathon! I have been running for a about 5 months and I know I have plenty of time to train and be ready for the race come January. I need a good app to help me. What do you veteran runners suggest? I know I will have tons of questions between now and then, but right now, I'm too excited for all that!:thumbsup2

I personally use Garmin Connect b/c it syncs with my GPS and I can send my reports to my trainer. I see loads of my running buddies using daily mile or Map My Run and sharing their training on FB.

i loved Runkeeper cause it definitely helped but i noticed that it was off by a lot when i got my garmin forerunner 110. i think garmin has the best product out there (and i'm sure others will disagree). but i think right now, garmin is the best thing i have.

Thanks. I actually don't have a runner's watch. I use the Nike plus app right now to track all my runs. Does the Garmin Connect app actually help me train or just track?

I'm not sure Garmin Connect tracks. It's a free app to access your Garmin Connect acct. But the Garmin Fit app does record and auto syncs with your Garmin Connect account. I use a Forerunner and the Garmin Connect app to view my info. I have Garmin Connect as a back up app in case I forget my Forerunner or if my Forerunner battery dies. I have had good results with the Garmin Fit app. Note that the Garmin Fit app also shows you your Garmin Connect acct and workouts. The Garmin Connect app was $4.99 when I bought it.

Swimfly, do you sync via your phone? Or via computer? I'm looking to find a way to sync via my iPhone. I THINK I can if I get a Wahoo Ant+ adapter. But I have the iPhone 5 and they don't have a lightning version yet. I could get an adapter but then that's 2 purchases for something I can do via my computer. But I'd really like the mobile option to upload.

Garmin Connect doesn't track while your running. Your GPS (Garmin watch) tracks and then uploads to your app. I absolutely think the Garmin Connect helps me train b/c I analyze my runs and target what went right/wrong. I'm learning a ton this year by having a trainer review my runs and having other runners provide input/support.

The newer models auto-sync to the phone. I have a 405 so I sync to my computer. I really want a new model.... maybe my birthday this fall.

Thank you both so much. Maybe I'll invest in a GPS before the race. Christmas, maybe..;)

Christmas in July right?!?! I strongly encourage you to check one out. It completely changed the way I train/run. Search for used via craig's list, ebay, or even your local running store. Costco will often have the older versions for sale in their jewelry/watch case.

I wish they all did. I just got the Forerunner 910xt, the very latest (I do triathlons too) and it doesn't auto sync. They need to have built in Bluetooth to do so and the 910xt doesn't :-(. But it's an awesome device otherwise and really helps me review past events. I have a HORRIBLE memory, so reviewing previous events/efforts allows me to better prepare for upcoming ones.
