Buying direct, what negotiation can be done?

We are in Orlando at the moment (staying offsite boo!) and we have met with a guide about buying points, we always thought we would buy resale but as we are overseas we can buy direct with finance and the finance doesn't show on our credit score (big bonus for us as we want to move in a few years).

Our friends bought last year and were 'given' free points when they bought their points. Our guide isn't working at the min so I spoke to a guy on the phone who really spun us a line, he first tried saying he didn't know what we were talking about, then that the offer finished last may and once I told him our friends didn't buy till September ;) he said it was the end of September. He then said it was 10 free points for every 100 points, now our friends said it was more than that ;) so I have no faith in him or what he told me at all.

So what I basically want to know is, can you negotiate with the guide? If it was a case of getting extra points thrown in from Disney, we would probably buy direct for the ease. Plus we have a different sort of finance here in the uk, when we take out a loan we have to pay all of the interest back even if we pay the loan off early, which is different to the Disney finance where we would just pay for the interest we used (as we would certainly pay the loan off early).

Sorry for such a long winded post, and thanks in advance for all of your help!

Direct prices and deals are pretty much set in stone...no negotiating or that's what I've always been told. Here is a link to the current "deals".

The deals or promotions change from time to time...the free extra points deal is not going on right now.
You may want to search on these boards about buying resale. We just bought AKV via resale for $66/point.

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. That's such a shame about the 'free' points, looks like it might be resale then!

What probably happened was your friends bought in September but bought a UY that was before September. When that happens you get the points for the UY you are in and then you get your points on your anniversary. They spin this as free points but in reality you are paying for them.

No that is not what happened. They were given the extra points ie they bought 250 points but each year they have 280 to use and pay dues on 280 points. They still got money off per point and $1000 off. This was another off as well.

They tried that technique with us though, dec UY but we get 2012 years points for 'free' ;)

I stand corrected, that was a nice deal. I never saw that one, we usually get emailed all current offers.

Just so you know the 2012 points are not 'free' right now for all UY beyond May are still in the 2012 UY so if you bought with a June - Dec UY you would get current points and then once your UY came around you would get your 2013 allotment.

Do the research and the math resale will save you a lot of money. Good luck!

I believe that this deal was introduced shortly after a price increase, and essentially all it did was bring the new prices in line with the old prices for a short period of time. Just remember that no deal that Disney offers is going to get the price per point close to what resales go for.

There was a promotion this time last year, if you bought 100 points at AKV or Aulani you would get 20 points "free" each year = 120 points per year.

Buy 200 points and get 40 points "free" = 240 points per year, 300 points and get 60 "free" = 360.

Of course, you have to pay dues on all the points every year but you didn't have to pay for the intial purchase of the "free" points, resulting in a $2800 savings per 20 points.

Could this be what your friends got?

After this promotion, they offered another one but it was buy 100 get 10.

We bought last year in July and got the offer your guide was talking about. It was indeed 10 free points for every 100 bought. Prior to that they had been offering 20 free for every 100 bought for a short period of time that ended before we decided to buy.

Nothing is free. One way or another the buyer always pays no matter what Disney or anyone else says.

The "deal" may have been free points but the price was bumped to cover the cost.

To answer the OP's question, Disney doesn't deal, they don't have to. I suggest that you factor in the direct cost plus the interest that you will pay on the loan over 10 years to see what an ownership will really cost you.

As the others have said, it'd not really a deal compared to resale. If you take AKL as an example, 250 points at $140 would cost $35,000 if you take the $1,000 off and then divide the total by the 280 points they have to use then in effect they paid slightly over $121 a point. Now that is a good price for buying direct but for 280 points on the resale market you'd expect to pay around $65 possibly lower.

Unless you need to use Disney finance rather than one from the UK paying $18,200 verses $34,000 makes re-sale a no brainer as I can think of plenty of things to do with nearly $16,000 rather than give it to Disney.

Just so you know, unless the loan company that Disney use for people buying from the UK (GE Money) has changed, your loan payments will go up. We were unaware of that, thinking it would be a fixed loan like when you get a loan here in the UK (i.e. you pay a certain amount each month for a fixed period). It ws not like that and, within 6 months of taking the loan, we got a letter from GE Money saying that our loan payments were increasing. Not a huge amount (about £2 per month) but I have no idea how often that would have happened over the period of the loan. We paid our loan off about 6 weeks later so it didn't affect us but just saying that, unless it's changed, you might want to take that into consideration.

I'm not 100% sure that you are correct in thinking it doesn't affect your credit score here in the UK either - what I do know is that they don't do a full credit check on people purchasing from the UK, basically (I believe) because they can't - so if you have bad credit, it won't affect your success in getting the loan.

That's unusual we are from the UK and our loan payments are fixed for the term. What is also great is you can over pay as much as you want and there are no penalties. We have already reduced the term by 5 years.

Also it doesn't feature on the UK credit agencies so it doesn't come into my credit score at all.n it does however depend on the company they use to finance there are several they use for the UK market.

I have heard about people from the UK who got into difficulties being about to just hand the points back to DVC and walk away with no negative finance but it depended on which finance company had Been used so it is worth looking into the difference dis between the finance companies.

At the DVC interest rates I really wouldn't finance over 10 years. We only financed because our savings were on 90 day notice. Then we decided we wanted to work t paying it off quickly instead of raiding our savings and we will pay it in less than 12 months but have still laid a fair a mount if interest. I wouldn't recommend financing if you don't have the cash to pay off the loan if you need to.

Yes this is what they got :)

We did the tour in April

If we bought before our vacation was over they were going to give you all of Dec 2012 points in addition to 2013 points.

We decided resale was right for us so we didn't buy.

To me, this is a nice incentive......if you were going to buy direct. When they give you previous years' points you don't have to pay MFs on them so you actually start out with double points for your first stay. It spoiled us, so we had to buy more. ;)

What UY were you going to get?

Well, give isn't the right term because they will charge you prorated MFs on the current year and if you were getting a December UY, then you'd still be in your 2012 UY anyway. So the term "give" can be a pretty persuasive sales tactic.

Buying resale and what you can afford without financing will be your best and cheapest option.
