Last minute dramas. SIL in Darwin had one of those freaky accidents - it was their wedding anniversary but the kids wanted to go crabbing so off they went, walking down a muddy track, she turned to make sure they were behind her, not looking where she was going, stumbled over a rut she thinks and managed to fall very awkwardly and break her leg-both the big (tibia?) bone and smash a smaller one near the ankle. She's in hospital now in quite a bit of pain but they keep delaying surgery to put in plates and pins until the swelling goes down-now scheduled for next Monday.
Why a drama for us? MIL is flying up to Darwin to help out BIL with the three youngish (primary school) kids=had to find alternative carer for our old (15 yo) dog Pepper. Ring around friends and luckily our ex neighbours are able to have him. They are doggie people and currently have a young, completely lunatic, Red Kelpie. I know whilst they will take good care of him, poor old Pep would have been happier pottering slowly around being spoilt with Granny but SIL needs are much greater.
They have had one of those years when everything keeps going wrong. BIL has only just got out of hospital himself after a shoulder op and the place they are renting was sold so they had to find a new place to move to, not easy with the 3 kids + their menagerie of dogs, cats, lizards, birds-Darwin is a tough renters market and horrendously dear rents. They were just settled in a new place in Palmerston, SIL had just got a promotion at work, BIL back at work in a new job which put less stress on his shoulder, and now this happens! Hopefully this is the last thing and they have a better run ahead.
Glad we got Pep sorted (Aus. Karen will appreciate the fact he's a mini Schnauser)-he has never had to go to kennels as years ago we had both sets of parents who used to alternate the dog and cat minding while we were away and now he's far too old to cope, if they'd even take him. It is getting harder though as my list of potential carers is rapidly diminishing! = DH says no more pets after Pep goes. I really miss having a cat though-if we find a nice cattery and the cat gets used to going when its young, I can't see a problem (other than extra $)???!
