Here now...roach included :/

so I am currently in WDW at a deluxe hotel. we checked in this morning, and after returning to our room this afternoon i discovered a HUGE roach (about 3 inches long) in the shower. I called housekeeping because i didn't know what to do with. I was grossed out, but now that it's nighttime it's bothering me more! Is it likely there are more in the plumbing somewhere?! Would anyone have asked for compensation of some sort? I understand it's Florida, but talk about ruining night 1 in a $400 room!!

It's Florida, those things are everywhere, it's really to their credit that you don't see more of them, I went to a University in the South and our dormitory had them everywhere...was not unusual to see five in a day in your room! We learned how to 'dispose' of them rather quickly without flinching...

I would not ask for a discount, BUT if I saw a second one in my bathroom, I think a call to the manager would be in order, he needs to know if it's a problem or a fluke straggler that came in with the vacuum cleaner when they cleaned your room...

Ah yes, i figured they're prob no big deal to people who live down here. In Ohio our biggest bug is a thousand.legger, so i had no idea what to do with such a huge roach! I'm REALLY hoping there will be no more here. Still creeped out by the size though and all our luggage and bags are zipped shut!

I honestly don't care what they call those things down there, Palmetto Bug, or whatever...it's a roach!!! I saw several while down there last week...all outside, thanks goodness and not in our rooms. Those suckers fly and I could easily see how they could land on someone and be transported into a room.

It's highly likely that it's that type of fluke versus an infestation, but still, I would let mgmt know just in case. I wouldn't ask for compensation, but I would feel better if someone "checked" into it.

Walk down to the front desk, get a manager. Have them come to your room and see it. Except that it's gone. But the thing is, a *call* isn't going to cut it. When you call the "front desk" you get a call center that isn't even necessarily in Florida. Go to the front desk and talk to a manager.

There was a recent post by someone who lives in Florida and knows his Floridian bugs, who said there was a roach (NOT palmetto bug) infestation in his room at a moderate. He made sure they knew about it.

Yep. One or two of these big ones in not that big of a problem.

It's when you have 3 zillion of the little ones you need to be worried.

A friend & I were at BWV in a studio and we were out on the balcony watching the fireworks. I looked back into the room and there was one crawling across the rug. My guess is it flew in the open balcony door. We chased it around, my friend finally got it with her shoe. We didn't see another one.

It was my understanding, if you see one cockroach that means there are many more.

I agree with the OP. I would also have trouble sleeping after that. I would think of the ER reality show I watched that had a patient, who came in with ear pain; and, it turned out to be a cockroach in their ear.

I think for $400 a night I would ask for a different room, even if that is an extreme request. I would never be able to sleep after that.

That is why I said it was a Palmetto bug. They do not infest/swarm/whatever like German roaches. It is unlikely there would be more than one in a room. It's not worthy of compensation - as Deb said, they get in by flying in an open door generally, it's not an indication of poor cleaning or maintenance or anything. One joined us at our dinner table on the first night in our new home in Florida. I chased it outside. They're big and ugly though, definitely. Remind me more of a cicada.

Yup had one in our bathroom in the Hyatt at MCO before our cruise last April-just flushed him-didn't see another.Yuck!!!!!!!

Hubby is an ER doc, as much as it grosses us out he says it's a lot more common than you would think.

No guarantee there wouldn't be one in the next room. Yes, it is Florida. The ONLY way to make sure you don't have ANY creepy crawlies in ANY hotel room is to not vacation in Florida. And 'm sure, yes, it's probably true, you have bugs in your house. You might not see them but they are there.

Sorry to all the roach haters out there but what did the roach do? Did it attack you and bite you? It's just a bug. We would have gotten a cup, trapped the poor thing and released it outside.

As a pp said tree roaches (as tx calls them) are big and dark brown. They are gross but everywhere no matter how clean the area is. They just sneak in. German roaches (little lighter brown ones) are the ones that if you see one there's a thousand more hiding in the walls. German roaches are the result of a dirty environment. Tree roaches are the result of trees and humidity :/

They are gross, but nothing like the german variety.
