Count ME IN. Star Wars Movies

I love Star Wars almost as much as I love Disney. With JJ Abrams at the helm I am looking forward to see what he does with it. I am slightly wary after the dissappointment of the last three. Okay I think there are moments of fun in Clones and Revenge of the Sith but I still don't like Phantom Menace. I prefer the originals.

Loved how he Handled the Last Star Trek movie and looking forward to the sequel Trek movie in a few weeks.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for More Star Wars attractions at WDW

I think the big thing is that Lucas is not directly involved with them. He may have given them the outline of the remaining saga stories, but he's now just a "consultant" - which in Hollywood-speak often means "paid to stay away"...

I _do_ think the "movie every year" plan is too aggressive and could dilute the brand. Too much chance of a stinker cropping up.

Quite surprised they didn't announce anything more with Star Wars other than the May the 4th event, which for Pete's benefit, is actually a fan-created unofficial "special day" dedicated to Star Wars. Given that Disney is observing it, and owns Lucasfilm, it could be seen as making it official...

being a fan of the Wars i am very excited for these new movies to come out, in my opinion as long as they keep the story telling of the first three and the action and lightsaber fights of the "new-ish" three id be very happy.

As an avid Star Wars nerd, here is my issues:

I have always loved the movies, but I did not become a real big Star Wars fan until I started reading the expanded universe books. I started reading in the mi-90's while in middle school and I continue to read the new ones to this day.

There is a story line after the 6 movies already. A story line that in many cases, is far better than the movies. The "Thrawn Trilogy" by Timothy Zahn is hands down the best, far surpassing the original, and if turned into three movie, would be an "Epic Win".

While I am sure that JJ Abrams can make some great movies (nothing could be worse than the last three), until the source material is revealed, any fan of the Lucas Books series will be disappointed.

The Star Wars Universe has a very complicated idea of what is "canon". There are different levels, and the Expanded Universe are recognized as canon, but a level lower than the media productions from LucasFilm, but above things like the games. If they chose to produce a storyline that is contradictory to the Expanded Universe, and contradictory elements in the Expanded Universe get demoted.

I have a feeling that they will avoid that as much as possible, if they don't actually opt for an EU storyline, but I think it could be quite difficult.

But expect to start hearing about stuff set in the Expanded Universe outside of the saga stories - set in the time of the Old Republic...

There is some good stuff in the EU...the Thrawn Trilogy amongst the best...I do not feel like the movies need to follow the books. There is too much there for anyone besides die hards to be interested in.

Since they are keeping OLD Luke, Leia and Han involved, it is unlikely the Thrawn Trilogy will be a source, as it takes place only about 5 years (if I recall) after the OT. I have no problem at all with them doing something outside the novels. Novels are inherently a different animal from movies.

He accepted them as canon, just on a different level than his own.

Either way, even though I am a die hard SW fan (named my kids after characters) and a Disney fan, I will not watch the movies if they are not along the already established and accepted story line. Lucasfilm started unifying the books for a reason.

Yup...at least when George was in charge, they were canon until he said otherwise, or it conflicted with his own stuff.

With Disney in charge, not sure if or how it will change, but there is someone in charge of the "Holocron", which is their database of it all.

What got done with the first one really concerns me, they stepped away from a lot of the previous canon and said "oh it's an alternate reality" which apparently gives them license to mess things up that people have taken for granted for years. Like for example James T. Kirk being born in Iowa, heck the town he is supposed to be born in even has a sign declaring it the future birthplace of Captain Kirk.

Also given Disney current record with sci fi films they may have a hard sell ahead of them if they want to put the Disney name on it.

Yes I get it was a reboot I just don't get why they had to start from the beginning why not have a complete new crew. Plus also it seems to be a growing trend with movies to "reboot" a series every so often. Look at how many Spider Man movies have come out as "reboots".

John Carter was a failure because Disney's Marketing droids didn't have a clue how to market it. Some of them said, "We can't use the word Mars in the name, that's bad juju..." given their past record with movies with Mars in the name. Then they wanted to downplay the SF elements, because of Disney's past record with SF (I just rewatched The Black Hole since the TiVo recorded it...Tracey said, while they were trying to escape, "Isn't this music just wrong for this part?"). They played up other angles. They missed the target audience, and tried to backpedal at the last moment but the marketing damage was already done. Disney Marketing scuttled the boat before it got out of drydock.

It was actually a decent movie.

But I don't think we need to worry too much about Disney here. They don't have to try and invent marketing for this. This also isn't a case of Disney simply purchasing the rights and title and slapping it on anything they want - all the creatives are still there - they didn't get rid of the LucasFilm people (at least those involved in the movies). And they may still have the LucasFilm marketing people as well, who might have a better clue as to what they are doing with it.

But also, Star Wars is self-marketing. They'd have to put out one heck of an awful trailer to stop the legions...
