Buying DVC for the love of Disney vacationing?

So as I read the threads that debate the economic theories behind to buy or not to buy into the DVC I was wondering how many people buy because they love to vacation at WDW and plan to for many years into the future.
For us it was just one of the things we have been waiting to do when we could afford it. Did we crunch the numbers so we knew the breakeven point nope, WE have stayed in OKW one bedroom in the past and loved it and decided that was the way we wanted to vacation in the future, I was a chef for many years and cooking is not a chore to me or something I don’t want to have to do on vacation. So we are no longer dependant on Disney food if we chose not to be. Another deciding factor for us is we have our 20th anniversary coming up in Jan and wanted to go to WDW for it. Our oldest DD is getting married in May 2014 and they wanted to go to WDW for their honeymoon so we are getting enough points with our contract to take care of both of these trips so it worked out for us. As well as the fact as we get older this may help us take vacations when we might choose not to.
Who else bought because they love Disney and plan to spend many vacations there and wanted to prepay a portion of it.
Just wondering

That is exactly why we bought DVC. We had stayed at OKW on cash and loved the resort and the amount of space in a one bedroom. We love WDW and like going multiple times a year. We always stay on site (even thought we are <90 minutes away). I live being able to have some meals in the room and not having to rely on Disney dining options.

Is it the best investment? Who knows. We know we are able to afford the luxury of DVC and love being able to go over and over again.

I think almost everyone buys for the love of Disney, but there are some that like the discussion(s) on the financial aspect of ownership. My wife and I are in the process of of buying resale (waiting to hear back on ROFR) and we primarily are buying because Disney is a place we both love being and it is a place where we can just spend time together without rushing around or having to feel like we HAVE to do something. We are super busy with our jobs and I'm sure like many around here we don't spend nearly as much time together as we could, but Disney allows us that time away from everything.

Hopefully we'll have kids soon and then they too will be able to enjoy Disney with us.

This is exactly my reason for buying. Hopefully next week I will find out if my contract made it through ROFR.

Dont take this wrong but why else would someone buy in? ;) We‘ve been goin to disney since i was 2. Every or every other year growing up. We were planning on buying into dvc next yr but when we found out prices were going up direct we jumped on the resales. Just sent our closing docs in. Now that our boys are 6 & 3 we plan on going every year, cant wait for this fall! My dh & I went on a rc cruise for our 1 yr anniversary 9.5 yrs ago to see if we‘d like something other than Disney & when we got back we were mad we didn't go to the parks. Its our happy place :goodvibes

People say to me all the time, "how can you be going back to Disney again?? Doesn't it bother you to be giving Disney all that money (maintenance fees, park tickets, etc.)?"

My response...."It was and remains a conscience choice!"
We chose to buy into DVC 13 years ago because there's no place else on the planet we want to repeatedly visit. We love the better accomodations, have enjoyed year after year of vacationing with our family and friends and love knowing we will continue to do so for years to come. Not to mention, our kids being able to use it well into their 50's!

We never sat down and did any calculations, roughly I know when we hit the break even point, but it was never about that. People who love to cruise time and time and time again, pour their vacation dollars in that, people who love to visit Europe and go repeatedly pour their vacation dollars into that.

For us, it was never about an investment or money, it was and is about where we want to be when we vacation. We loved it then, we love it now!

Happy planning!

We bought our points because we wanted to stay in deluxe resorts and becasue hotel rooms didn't suit us with three children. We bought to stay in 2 bedrooms and have cooking and laundry facilities.

IMO they are 2 different things. You can love Disney and/or WDW without owning a DVC interest.

Ownership has pros and cons, if it works for you and your family, great!

Us too, we love Disney. We did not analyze how long to "break even" either. We wanted to have the extra space that the villas provide. We are a family of 5 and we all enjoy Disney as much now as we did on our first visit. We also wanted to have motivation to take a vacation every year. Without DVC we might skip going on vacation. We don't want to skip going, but know that owning helps our decision To go every year a lot easier!

Unless one plans to stay at DVC resorts consistently and enjoys Disney enough to stay on property, why would any of us buy in? However, unless one makes the judgement (rightly or wrongly) that DVC at least makes sense financially it'd be crazy to buy. To knowingly pay more simply to be a member of the club would be the definition of insanity.

We love staying onsite at WDW and for us owning DVC was the most economical way to get the type of accomodations that we wanted.

Yes, but you only knew this by doing an in depth analysis of your options. :)

There are people out there who simply buy what they want, without regard to options or cost. Then there are those of us who analyze (or over analyze) every aspect of the purchase. People do what they're most comfortable with, it doesn't make one approach better than the other...just different.

Back in 2010 we rented points at BCV and we loved the way they treated my family of 5 . The closeness to Epcot and we loved staying on property after staying there we decided it would be best if we bought in but we did alot of research before. We love Disney and over the years we wanted to stay at deluxe resorts and we felt this would fit our needs best

I couldn't agree more.

I wan't saying that we loved and and just bought it. We toured OKW when that was the resort that was for sale and the only DVC there was. We just are buying in now, life got in the way many times thru layoffs and we had kids (they were not in the way) bought a old house etc. So we waited until we could afford it, I see some people that are buying becasue they think they will make money etc.
We bought in becasue we like staying at deluxe resorts (gotta have a king bed) enjoy havinga kitchen and the extra space and we love to stay on property and LOVE DISNEY :cool1:

But to buy with no thought if how it willimpact the rest of your lifes financies is just :goofy:

Have a great day

Exactly, unfortunately we see quite a number examples of people buying that can't afford it and/or it doesn't make sense for them.

I expect that is one main reason why we see new properties with resales, like Aulani. I'm sure it will happen with GF too. Guess those people have fun while it lasted...:rolleyes2 I don't agree with buying things that you can't afford just because you love it. That is irresponsible.

I agree with Doug. We also enjoy staying on property, and wanted a more economical way to get better accomodations for less money OOP. In the long run, about 4 years time (about 3 years left now), our DVC will have paid for itself.

I'm sure that's one reason and there are others. One caveat I'd add is that being able to make the payments is not the same as being able to afford something.
