Cheap Non-Park Day?

I need some activity ideas to spend a fun day in the Orlando area WITHOUT visiting a major theme park. We will have 4 adults and 3 kids, ages 5, 3, and 1.5. We're staying at Wyndham Reunion resort for a weekend (Thurs-Sun) and plan to spend Friday & Saturday at the resort pool/waterpark which I'm sure the kids will love. We check out Sunday so can't really hang out at the resort. Any ideas?

Disney's mini-golf places, they're much cooler than you're typical mini-golf place

the dine-in movie theater (okay that one's more $ but you were going to eat anyway, right?)

We did four days once and didn't get bored at all, but we did spend most of the time in the pools. My kids liked Fantasia Gardens so much that two days later we did Winter Summerland.

Your cheapest option would be the state parks, I expect. If you enjoy trip reports, there are some on this thread where people visit offsite attractions:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2968484

I know Gina-Gina-Bo-Bina's trip reports linked from there both have (non-Disney) mini golf reviews (I think she got halfprice coupons from LivingSocial; she says somewhere in the reports), and she also goes to Gatorland.

But how cheap do you mean by "cheap"? My kids got a kick out of FunSpot last time we were out, which is cheap compared to a one day theme park ticket but a long ways from free:

Depending on your kids, you also might enjoy Downtown Disney or Boardwalk. They're both glorified outdoor malls, but Boardwalk has entertainment weekend afternoons (and some weekdays), magicians and jugglers kind of stuff, while Downtown Disney has the play area and displays by the Lego store (free), a tiny carousel and equally tiny train ride (which cost, but IIRR it's just a dollar or two), squirty fountains to play in, and the boat ride from one end to the other (and to some resorts). There's more going on at Downtown Disney in the evenings but it's also a lot noisier and more crowded.

My kids enjoyed that sort of thing at those ages, but they also got that they wouldn't get to buy anything/had a set amount they could spend. Might not be much fun with kids who're used to getting "stuff" when they go to the store!

My first choice would be Leu Gardens, which is huge and has lots of places for kids to explore. My kids at those ages would have loved it -- and they would have spent most of their time there examining lizards, butterflies, and bugs. ;) But there are also things like an unpaved path that leads you to a guy made out of pots, and multiple bridges over a stream, and a floral clock that some kids will enjoy. I haven't seen it all, but it does not, to my knowledge, have a child's garden or play area.

What/where is the dine in movie theatre, sounds like fun

What/where is the dine in movie theatre, sounds like fun

It is the AMC theater at DTD Westside. You could spend a full day shopping, eating, and seeing a movie at DTD/AMC Dine In theater. As others have said, there is a lot to do and see there.

head over to 192 and go to Old Towne--Tons of shops to wander in and out of...Kidi rides for the little--Go carts for the older 'kids'...Like Flea Markets? 3-4 places along 192 to go to--Mini golf place also. Hit up Boggy Creek air boat rides for a real adventure.. There is Gator World also..this is thier 50 year anniversary. Not sure when you are going but check out Silver Spurs arena may be a Rodeo or Horse going on there (on 192)

Like airplanes--Head out west on I4 to Fantasy of Flight and tour there or go to Dino World kids will have good time there. Both near Polk City...Not far from Disney.

There is always the outlet shopping places...Look for discount offers/coupons in advance.

These 2 get great reviews and are nearby!

Blue Spring State Park

Pack up a picnic basket with lots of goodies, bring the kids, suits and towels and head on over to Blue Spring State Park in the summertime for a wonderful family adventure.
Blue Spring is the largest spring feeding into the St.Johns River. The beautiful spring is also a designated manatee refuge during the cooler winter months. The spring stays a constant 72 degrees throughout the year, and the manatees gather in the spring to keep warm as the temperature outside drops. During the cooler months, there are no boats, tubes, or snorkeling allowed to provide a safe haven for the manatees.
During the summer, this park is very popular, and fills up to capacity on the weekends, so get here early! We viewed the campground area, and it was very nice. They have 51 sites, with water, picnic tables, grills, 27 of which also have electricity. They also have 6, two bedroom cabins! I found that the campground was located in a pine scrub forest, and the sites were very private and well spaced. I am looking forward to camping there soon.
Bryan loved to swim in the springs. They have stairs leading down into the cool, clear, pristine spring water. We saw people snorkeling, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, and swimming.
The color of the water is beautiful, the whole area is so picturesque. There is a boardwalk all the way down to the boil where the water comes up from the aquifer then all the way back up to the playground and the picnic area with a playground.
After the swim, we went for a nature walk, played on the jungle gym, and then went on a narrated wildlife eco tour!
The boat tour was two hours long, and took us up the St. Johns River. We learned all about the native plants and animals as we traveled, from our Florida Wildlife Tour Guide. We saw deer, alligators, ibis, a cormorant, turtles, osprey, and more! This was so much fun for both of us, I know you will enjoy it too.
The company is called St. John River Boat Tours, they have 2 tours per day 10am and 1pm. You can reserve your boat tour at: 407.330.1612, or 386.917.0724. www.sjrivercruises.com You can also charter one of their boats for weddings, or special events!
We had a wonderful day here at Blue Spring State Park, and hope to come back here soon to go camping!

Wekiwa Springs State Park
1800 Wekiwa Circle
Apopka, Florida 32712
Phone: (407) 884 2008
www.floridastateparks.org/WekiwaSprings
Heaven is green and it's name is Wekiwa Springs! This lush natural sanctuary is the perfect natural swimming hole. With cool 72 degree spring water all year long, it is refreshing and pure, pumping out 42 million gallons of natural spring water every day!
Wandering through 13 miles of trails, you can imagine just what the Timucuan Indians saw in this tropical paradise. You might get the chance to see a blue heron, ibis, turtles, cormorant, aningha, deer, wild boar, or even an alligator sunning on the shore of the river.
Stairs lead down to the swimming area that is surrounded by a rock ledge with seating for easy access on all sides. It is protected from alligators, snakes and other critters by a safety net barrier by the bridge, which screens out and discourages wildlife to enter the swimming area.
The boardwalk leads to the canoe and kayak rental stand provided by Nature Adventures. They provide everything you need for a 2 hour or more eco tour on the Wekiva River.
Here is their website http://canoewekiva.com/
Call for prices and reservations. phone: 407-880-4110 email: Email HereWe checked out the camping area, too. It is very nice, and VERY affordable!
They have 60 campsites. Each campsite has water, electricity, in-ground fire circle with a grill and a picnic table. They are very private, with wooden split fencing surrounding each site. The fencing would be great to dry towels or lean bikes, or tie down a rain fly. There are two restroom facilities with hot showers!
They even have 2 primitive campsites, called Otter Camp, and Big Buck Camp, that are only accessible by canoe or kayak for a very unique camping adventure.
All reservations for campsites except for next day reservations can be made by calling Reserve America, at (800) 326-3521. Next day reservations can be made by calling the park at (407) 884-2008
We love this place and will be back again to camp!

You could also drive out to Clearwater Beach for the day. It is gorgeous there and easy to get to!

As for the OP's question,

Gatorland is a great day out, particularly with children your kids' ages. They will love the little train ride, there's a great splash pad, the shows are entertaining and not too lengthy, and its fun (and fairly inexpensive) to feed the gators. There's a nifty little aviary too.

Mini golf is tons of fun (we love Pirates Cove and Congo River the most, but we have also enjoyed Hawaiian Rumble, Gator Golf and Volcano Island.....there is also this golf-all-day + ice cream special running on Groupon: http://www.groupon.com/deals/mighty-jungle-golf-adventure). I'm not sure if your wee ones will be too little for this or not.

An airboat ride is absolutely awesome, and a relaxing way to spend the day. I highly recommend Wild Willy's in St. Cloud. You get to meet and hold some baby gators after your ride which is fun for all.

I also think that the waterpark at Coco Key on I-Drive would be great for smaller kids. Day passes are available.

I also meant to add.....

as some of the PP's mentioned, Groupon, Livingsocial, and (a new find for me thanks to this thread) Half Off Depot are all great places to watch for deeply discounted deals on Orlando area attractions. Sign up for their emails and be patient and you will be pleasantly surprised at some of the offers that come up. We have snagged some excellent offers in the past on some really fun non-Disney Orlando family attractions........they are definitely worth keeping an eye on ::yes:: .

You can get really cheap tix. for the ecobuggy ride at world of citrus here
http://www.halfoffdepot.com/orlando/all/adventure

Code EXTRA51 gets an extra 51% off the listed price today. I bought tix. last week when they were an extra 50% off. Cost $17.50 for our 5 tix!

Thanks for the link :thumbsup2 . This deal works out even cheaper than our offer through the Entertainment Book.

Hmmmmmmm.......not sure residents of Canada can purchase from this company (just a heads up for any other Canucks that may have wanted to cash in on this great price). It will not accept my postal code :furious: or give me a province to pick from the drop-down menu. I have called and left a message for their customer service department. We shall see what happens.
