Does Anybody Ever Change Their Mind??

Inspired by tvguy's Controversial Thread topic, have you ever read anything on the DIS that actually swayed you from a firmly held position? :scratchinAre you even open to it? I've gotten lots of helpful information from Q&A type threads that I've used to decide where to go, what to see, how to do something, etc., but when it comes to deeper "world-view" issues I admit that my carefully-considered opinions are pretty much set in stone. How about you?

My beliefs are pretty strong but I do like seeing the other side. I might not change my mind but I can become more sympathetic to those who feel differently.

I enjoy seeing the other side and it might help me think of a better approach to the topic. I don't know that it necessarily changes my overall belief.

Yes. I asked about an issue and why there was still unhappiness about it. I honestly kind of ducked thinking I was going to get blasted for even asking because sometimes things go that way here. A poster was very kind and posted the details of why "it was not good enough". I didn't have a full understanding of the situation and fortunately, someone took the time to explain it without being ugly. We've since had many conversations and become what I consider online friends on a couple of sites.

I'm not sure about "Changing my Mind", but reading other threads has helped me understand there's another side to every story, some situations that I'd never really thought about before. I love to see a good debate on the DIS. I just hate when it gets personal (name-calling) when people have nothing more constructive to say, they start the personal attacks like correcting grammar, or looking up past posts of the person they are disagreeing with to try to make them look bad. That's when things start getting immature and ugly.

Yes I have. I have changed my mind about subjects. I have also realized I am wrong about some things. And I try to admit it when I'm wrong.

It always amazes me the people who just can't admit there is another point of view or that they may be wrong. It makes for some fun threads to read though.

The Disboards have actually helped my marriage. I read some of these controversial threads to my husband and it opens up the lines of communication on some topics we wouldn't have thought to discuss otherwise.

:thumbsup2 Love these...anybody mind if I "borrow" their approach?

Not here, but on another similar board.

I always thought that carpool lanes should consist of two ADULTS and that one adult + children didn't count. Kids can't drive, right? So it isn't saving any extra cars off of the freeway.

I should explain. Our freeways have carpool lanes and you can use them if you have two + people in your car. We DO have a problem with the carpool lanes being just as clogged with cars as are regular lanes. I carpool so obviously I want a bonus for having to go out of my way: a faster driving lane.

But someone changed my mind by simply explaining that although she does drive with her plus four kids in her car at times, not all of those kids are hers, thus she was indeed "taking" another car off of the road. If she didn't carpool with two of those kids, that would be two more cars on the road if their parents drove each kid.

So, I changed my mind on the subject and can see why it is okay for a single adult to have just kids as their extra passengers for carpool.

It can be done!

I think with highly controversial topics a change of attitude is a long-term process. Deeply held convictions aren't changed overnight. When I was younger I thought being gay was a horrible thing. As I've gotten older things have happened in my life to change my mind. A family member has come out, I've talked & been around religious leaders who have helped to guide me, celebrities have come out & I've become friends with lots of gay people. It hasn't been just one of those things that changed my mind. It was a combination of all those things, plus time, that led to my change of heart.

That is why, even as a Christian, I'm against strong forceful witnessing. I personally believe that more good is done by me living my life as I believe God would have me live it & be a force of good & kindness in the world than annoying a coworker because he's Muslim & every time we have lunch together I try & convert him.

Strangely enough, the older I get the more my mind is changed insofar as beliefs/convictions based solely on "well, that's tradition and/or the way it's always been".

So I appreciate well-thought out and expressed opposing opinions that allow me to explore other avenues of thought.

Yes, I have changed my mind a couple of times and gotten a deeper and better understanding for why others feel differently than I do on many occasions. Of course, sometimes I still just think the other side is cuckoo :lmao:

Yes. It has been one of the better things about being here for the last 12 years.

I have changed my mind. When I first posted on the Dis I thought that it was the gentlemanly thing to do, for men to offer women their seats on buses. And that they should do so! Now I understand that while it is nice for them to do so if they wish, I shouldn't expect it, and that they may need their seat more than I do.

I also get why some people use child leashes. Used to hate them.

I think so. The threads about the movie "song of the south" have made me think. I still don't like the movie but I've softened my stance.

No,never...well yes, sometimes. I mean no. Yes. Maybe. ;)

I have tried to think of some better solutions to long term problems in this country. Other than that no I still hold the same beliefs. I may research what I believe to get a firmer foundation, but that is it.

Yes, I've changed my mind on topics.

I've also got beliefs that cannot be swayed by argument/debate, but I still like to hear the opposing side and why they feel the way they do. It can be enlightening even if I don't change my mind.

I have changed my mind on many issues. I can't name one of them because they are hot topics here.
But yes, I have changed my mind.
